most definately!

Aswe all know, Advent don't make their own laptops i.e. 4211m, 4213 are all rebranded.

So is this a rebranded Acer and if so, which model?

it doesn't look too much like the Aspire One, maybe its an msi clone, not too sure

Thats defo an msi wind chassis

Anyone know how easy it is to replace ram on one if these.

I know some netbooks are a nightmare and sometimes not possible

Cheers

Decent price, the border round the screen looks daft though, obviously the housing was designed to hold the 10" screen

Dammit! When I bought a PVR from Dixons 2 weeks ago it was down at 2.5%!
C'est la vie...

That looks a good deal for one of those things.

I can't really see the point of these mini laptops to be honest, 3/4 the price of a basic laptop, 1/2 the screen, 1/2 memory, 1/2 as good processor, 1/3 the functionality.

You have to take the base cover off, but the ram slot is then easily accessible and the hard drive with a little more effort if you want to put a bigger one in.

To read up on anything to do with the Wind/Advent/Medion, visit the forum at www.msiwind.net

I think it's a budget vesrsion of the MSI wind with a different screen, less memory etc..

If it turns out im right i used this guide for memory upgrade for a 4211 so it should be the same. netbookmag.com/200…nd/

can't find no mention of battery life or battery size, would be interested if I knew it lasted more than 3 hours.

looks like the msi u90, which on some sites suggest over 5 hours battery life, which if true would make this a fantastic buy.

after some further reading it seems the U90 has a 3 cell battery and it only gave 1 hours and 39 minutes of battery life, which is really sucky, though this was on a poorly performing linux system with no energy saving features, so it might be quite a bit better with xp on it.

liliputing.com/tag…u90

laptopmag.com/rev…e=1

the u90x that pcworld buisness sells is also 3 cell. pcwb.com/cat…124

What's the battery life like on these things?
The next model up looks better value doesn't it? Bigger screen, double the ram, 50% more HDD space and bluetooth connectivity for just £70 extra. Also says 2 batterries.

Opinions please - would like to get one for my daughter for xmas.

Thanks.

hopefully some answers above, though these are figures for the u90 which might be the same as the advent.

Sorry word - not sure how I missed your post!!
Does the next one up lookbetter value for money, it's the 4211c?

purchased for the gf. thanks for posting. h+r

The appeal is simple: they weigh nothing and are tiny, so you can slip one in a bag and barely notice it's there.

Functionality depends on what you use it for, which with most of the population means basic web browsing, email and word processing, maybe IM chatting and so on. It's more than sufficient for any of those.

Advent...

Looks cheap (in my opinion)... That tiny screen lost in that huge bezel doesn't do it any favours.

I'd much rather have one of the many Netbooks from more reputable brands (with regards to support) for a similar price.

Still, good to see a proper sized HDD as opposed to flash memory-based and Windows XP for those that really don't want Linux.

Any mention of external dimensions?
Also use code fivetv for 5% off, 5% form egg...looking good...but a tad bulky?

Is there a way to get egg and quidco?

It's not actually made by Advent though, it's a rebranded MSI Wind

there is no quidco for dixons

The Acer aspire one is a better machine. You can get the base HD model for £189 from Play using an RAC voucher (see other post) with 512Mb RAM and 120Gb HD. Upgrade the RAM with 1Gb for £13-£14 and load XP on it instead of that horrible cut down Linux and you have a reasonable spec machine for just over £200.
Regarding why anyone wants one with the low spec? My daughter is doing a languages degree and going back and forth to Italy and France over the last 3 years has had to lug my old Dell Latitude D600 around in a backpack. The Advent fits in her handbag.

good price for what you get. this is the best in its class.
good enough for surfing the net and v simple tasks. it is underpowered tho. screen is also cramped.
unfort if you need to do more - watch videos etc, you need to spend about £100 more for a samsung NC10 or Wind u100
personally, i think it is worth the extra outlay, otw wait till the new atom comes out and prices will drop.

Looks very cheap and the huge bezel is a turn off. Buy a HP 2133 Mini-Note from ebuyer for £190 and install Vista on it :D....

Already posted this at PC World! Suppose the £7 saving makes it even hotter

I get lost in these Net Books. How does this compare to the Dell Mini 9 offer? This looks to be better but for only 1/2 gb of ram. Or am I missing something?

could someone please tell me what the dell mini 9 offer is please?

thanks

No integrated bluetooth as standard

The included Bluetooth connectivity gives this impressive machine even more sharing options.

Taken from system info on Dixons site ?

I'd love to get a netbook but the cheap ones seem to always be gimped with a rubbish battery.

I keep banging on about this, but I got the Advent 4211 (refurbished) from Dixons for £230 + Quidco and voucher.

Might be worth the extra $ for that over this one with the bigger screen and more ram.

Great little gadget btw, i'm working from it now.

Oh and battery is about 2 hours which is pretty rubbish but you can but a 6 cell or even a 9 cell for not much over £50.

May get this

might be better to go through pc world. even though their price is 7squids more, they do 5% quidco taking the price to 190

Yup. I looked at this and decided to go with a refurbed 4211, which I ordered the other day for £190 thanks to a combination of a one day reduction plus a voucher. Dixons no longer does quidco for hardware, unfortunately, but then I always had to put in an investigation in the past as Dixons never tracked of its own bat.

From what I could see, the Advent was feature identical with its Wind counterpart save for the Advent bios, lack of travel case and the two-tone livery. It was the Medion that had different internal components.
