Find out just about everything you need to know about this device, and putting a different ROM on it.
Modaco
And a video that will help you. Here
If you are thinking about using the Modaco rom, I would strongly suggest you use a windows xp pc if you can, you may find it easier than on windows 7.

Its tempting at this price but I'm also tempted to wait until 2nd May when I go abroad and reserve one for £207.

Not sure about the 3.03% topcashback as it says tablets 1.51%.

Massive support available via MoDaCo. Perfect for hacking around with. Not as refined as an iPad, but a great device nonetheless.

Couldn't have put it better myself =) The Modaco forum people are superb.
I certainly wouldn't be without mine now, the whole family love it - laptop is now redundant.

Apple Ipads are quality pieces of kit wth a massive app store already in place. You can do things with your ipad, with this tablet and its operating system your hands are tied.
Buy a used original Ipad off ebay - that is by far the best deal at the moment. I just got one and paid less for it than this deal.

i have an ipad and an android phone, much i love my phone but i just dont think android is there yet as a tablet system

mamboboy

Wait, What? You are saying your hands are LESS tied with iOS? *sniggers* … Wait, What? You are saying your hands are LESS tied with iOS? *sniggers* Yeah, less tied, but then instead they are permanently in Apple's vice grip...There's a high probability that the guys over at Modaco will get a Honeycomb ROM on this. Steal at this price IMO - only thing letting it down over the iPad (which has lesser specs than the iPhone 4g) is it's pretty poor screen.

I was meaning tied in there still being no tried/tested operating system. You are relying on them updating you to honeycomb and even then there is minmal apps at the moment.
in 6 to 12 months android might be there but at the moment they are are playing catch up.
Remember not everybody wants to hack all the time. We want something that works with out having to hack.

Great tablet with freedom to do lots of the things that the iPad can't or isn't allowed to do.

You don't have to hack it, to get it working - There are TONS of Apps for android in the market place and elsewhere.
I have to say I had a little play with Ipad and I thought it was a good bit of kit, but as I wanted to use Flash, read comics and swap memory cards easily to add different files when I wanted it was much more beneficial for me to use this
Oh and I much prefer the android operating system to IOS 4

on the 2nd march there was only 100 apps available on honeycomb (So i suppose that is tons)

65000 for IPAD

Not at all works perfectly fine as it is for what I use it for, I'm not saying I wouldn't try out honeycomb given the oppertunity but I'm certainly not relying on it.

But this isn't running honeycomb is it.......
How you can compare the two by looking at their total app count? Honeycomb has only just recently been released on devices, how many years has the ipad been out - I'd say they have a bit of a head start wouldn't you?

Terrible screen, but if you can only afford <£250 for a tablet then this is the only choice really.

I must say I looked at an ipad the other day after hearing all this hype and I was totally underwhelmed. it even looked dated but really couldn't do anything more than my £99 phone could do. I guess some people just enjoy spending their time at work to inflate apples profits.

No its running the older 2.2 which will update to honeycomb.
I was only saying a cheap IPAD 1 is best buy at the moment compared to IPAD 2 or android.
Its proven, works well, has bang up to date operating system.
Will upgrade to IPAD 3 or Android when see bigger benefits than there is at moment.

Can you compose your own music on your phone as you can with Garageband.
If so let us have your model of phone as that will be superhot :-)

its an android phone so can do whatever android does? hehe and you suggest something only available on apple, come on...

look its obvious, you liked working hard to pay as much money as you can to apple. some other people realise that the logo is no reason to chunk on half the price.

tablets priced like ipads are for mugs.

We bought an advent for our son and it's brilliant can do loads on it, much better than an Ipad which ties you into apple.

A friend actually got rid of his Ipad to get an Advent Vega after going on our sons.

Most decent tablets are being priced at the same level of the iPad.

The only reason this is cheaper is because it's not as good - if Advent could sell it for more then they would. But it would have to be a significantly better product.

People need to stop being angry at Apple for pricing them out of the market.

FilthAndFurry

I think the screen looks relatively sharp at 1024x600, and the colours really vibrant. However I do admit the rather narrow optimum viewing angle is a bit of a let down, particulary when trying to demonstrate something to another person.

tbh I wouldnt have touched the Vega with a bargepole if it wasnt for MoDoCo V8 ROM if only more people could try it, I think they would be amazed !

and most tablets at ipad prices are also taking you for fools. no you do not get twice the product because it has apple on it. your paying for their massive amazing advertising schemes.

nothing to do with being angry as I wont ever be loyal to any corporation, ill happily avoid apple and get much better products for my money. like this £300 laptop or my netbook

Actually, with the iPad you're getting the best tablet on the market at the moment. I do like Android, but the OS isn't there yet as anyone who used the Galaxy Tab will tell you.

If this product was as good as the Apple iPad, then it wouldn't be selling for roughly half the price.

price and cost do not factor where apple are concerned. this would be fine for the vast majority of users I am sure

I would assume so as they are not a charity I would personally belief an adndroid 2.2 tablet would be ideal for the vast majority of uses. at this price I thin its a far more realistic purchase

There have been plenty of Apple iPad deals between £289-329 recently, and a good few that work out at £300 (Makro and Comet come to mind).

The two big specification differences between them both:
iPad includes 16GB storage minimum
iPad has a 9.7" IPS Screen - this is different to the much cheaper TN screens on tablets like this Advent, and so the iPad has better viewing angles, colours etc... Not to mention the iPad has a larger resolution - 1024x768 vs 1024x600 on the Advent (so you can see more on the screen with the iPad when you are browsing etc...).

From the information on the Currys site, it also quotes battery life of 6.5 hours playing videos - iPad does 10 hours. There are other places that the Advent cuts corners too - e.g. only b/g wireless, rather than a/b/g/n on the iPad etc...

The tablets that are generally considered comparable to the Apple iPad are all more expensive. Other people like Samsung are finding it very difficult to hit the same price points as Apple - part of that is Apple's scale, but, the second part is they are actually charging a *very* reasonable price!

If you can pick up an Apple iPad v1 for £300 at the moment, I'd recommend that over this - better product, product ecosystem.

Otherwise, the Advent Vega is worth the £240 - but just remember there's a reason the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom, Apple iPad v2 etc.. are all £400+. It's not overcharging, it's just the fact they are including more expensive components and are simply better. You are 'getting what you pay for' really.

Some very good videos vs Ipad here - note how quick the vega is on the net, and it loads in the actual images (like on your pc) whereas the ipad seems to load in alternate images/videos sometimes (at a guess it's probably to do with flash)
Here
I never understand why there is so much bad feeling (from both sides of the ipad/android fence) why on earth is having a choice so bad for the consumer?

Edited by: "G0OSE" 19th Mar 2011

The Ipad will always be a far more creative tool for me than any android tablet if third parties such as Akai Pro, Korg, Propellerheads, Roland etc etc don't choose to port their product to Android. Which at present they are not.

It's not all about what people can afford, it's sometimes about what people want to use.

When the major players start to develop Android apps I will then be able to make a fair comparison. Until then, Apple have got my bucks...

Not bad for an average product but unless you have a special grievance with Aplple the iPad is much more tempting at £289 refurb or £329 new.

Funny man, you're a hardcore apple fanboy eh?

I've got an iphone 3g, iphone 4, ipad 16gb, last generation mac mini, current ceneration mac mini, current generation macbook, two generations old 24" imac and a current generation macbook air and will have a ipad 2 on release date, AND im an IOS developer.

hotukdeals.com/dea…452

The closest an ipad can get to having all the features of that phone is the 3g 16gb ipad which is £429 and doesn't even have a camera, and card slot or make calls (not even sure if it has gps)

the phone posted can do everything the ipad can do (albeit nowhere near as refined) and is £29.99
93.1% cheaper

Get a life.

(posted using my macbook air :D)

Constant boring same old same old. BTW, can you maybe capitalise your sentences, as it would make it easier to read your oddly biased rants.

Just to note there is 5% quidco on reserve & collect from Currys
Alternatively, it's the same price at Dixons.co.uk with 5% quidco for the next 4 days.

i have exactly the same and couldnt agree more , i love my desire and it does its job perfectly well as a phone but android has a long way to go to catch apple as the tablets go these debates all ways seem to go down the hardware route but for me its market place v appstore and theres only one winner by a considerable margin, at the moment

I brought one of the Vega's a couple of months back £239 after 5% quidco..

I was trying to work out the pros and cons of both machines Apple V Vega, and was definately swayed by the price and the Modaco website reviews etc.

Though not as pleasing on the eye as the Apple and with a poor viewing angle the benefits overall for me personally the HD out and the cost.

The Android market is available and so is the flash player. The Vega struggled with a few things like Facebook which crashed out on the odd occasion though the overall reliability is pleasing.

The audio was rated as one of the best sound players on the tablet market and the battery life is immense approx 8-10 hours reducing to 6 if for example playing movies..

Worth a punt for £239, though don't buy to replace a laptop.....Tablets are purely glorified mobile phones...

Get this, spend 15 minutes or so getting the Modaco ROM on it and you'll be a happy chappy.

Got on when they first came out and have not stopped using it. very impressive, just the screen angle is poor. The rest of it makes it a very useable and useful device.

Now all I need is a video editing app and i'd be uber happy!

Love my Vega. As for iPad vs Android ... as it stands at the moment, the Vega Out Of Box Experience is appalling! You WILL need to "hack" this tablet using Modaco or XDA Vega forums to get any SERIOUS applications on it. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone not willing to get their hands a little dirty. Android 2.2 is NOT a tablet OS - you will see applications that don't play nicely.

People who are afraid of computers, stay away...

Also don't look at replacing a laptop with this; using a touchscreen for type is frustrating for anything more than emailing/facebooking.

Otherwise - it's GREAT for watching vids, listening to tunes, browsing the net, playing games, reading PDFs.
