It's on a timer. On during the day, off at night I believe.

According to their website, they use $2-3 a month

Should be the other way around...as daytime you get enough sun anyway (if not disturbing in the night)
Since it has a timer (I am assuming) you can change it if you want i guess
M&S food at Clapham Junction have herbs growing like this in store and you can just snip off what you want.

How do I pay it in $USD?
I don't know if anyone else feels like this but I get put off by all the "Vine customer" reviews - lots of people seems to have been given this for free...
I've effectively built my own bigger one of these using the following

Steel shelves - £8.16 Homebase HUKD post
2 x LED Strips from China ~£6 (5V USB jobbies)
Wilko storage boxes £2.50
Smart plug (timer/energy consumption) - £8 HUKD post.
Various leftover plastic/yoghurt pots

Currently gives me 70x30cm space on the one shelf. I await arrival of brighter 12V 5630 LED strips for use on a second shelf (~£11 for 2) which I'll hookup via a second hand PC PSU I picked up for free.

Only did this recently and already loving the microgreens along with great progress on my basil/rosemary.

Will also be great for starting my fruit/veg/herbs for next year. I've yet to dabble in hydroponic nutrients.

Do you have a pump as well to stop root rot? I believe this model does

No, utilising the Kratky method. Ultimately trying to do it as budget as possible.
