Edit: I see it did originally sell for $399 but that was when all the extra functionality existed...... see below
and I see:
12/16/15: Aether has discontinued its operations, and the acquisition and consequent shutdown of the Rdio streaming service means that the unique features of this product, like voice search, are no longer active. If you've purchased an Aether Cone, you can perform a firmware update that turns the speaker into a basic AirPlay/Bluetooth tabletop speaker and adds Spotify Connect. More details are available at Aether.com.]

Surely this is good as a stand-alone unit though - I’ve seen some crap speakers for £30 in some stores. This must be a step up on the usual stuff in this price bracket... if the connectivity survives.

Can this work with a dot for multiroom?

It connects to a dot through Bluetooth so yes it can.
But the sound is very good when working.

Not mega loud but decent enough sound for music in a small room or for audiobooks. I’ve got two of them. They don’t compete with something like a Sonos play 1 but you could buy 4 or 5 of these for the same price
Would this be decent in a bathroom? Does it have to be plugged in or is it a rechargeable battery?
I was originally thinking of Bose soundlink - but for £30 - this seems decent

It runs off battery if needed but can be left on and plugged in. Don’t think I it’s bathroom rated officially but it’s worked fine the times I’ve used it in the bathroom to play audiobooks to the kids.
It’s not small mind, because it’s sort of square shaped it takes up shelf depth as well as width.
I reckon you’d get £30/£40 selling it on gumtree if it didn’t work out

In would be as good as any other in a bathroom.. obviously the moisture and water might be an issue. If I were you I’d get this and see what you think before a Bose. The sound is seriously superb, it’s a steal at £30. Just a bit fiddly to set up sometimes. It’s rechargable and lasts a decent amount of time per charge

Thanks. I’ve taken your advice. For £30
i don’t mind taking the risk. It’s only going to be occasional use anyway. Probably just Bluetooth it and use spotify. I have a NAD visia 1 for normal use but that needs plugging in and is too big for bathroom. This looks ideal and I like what the reviews say - despite its obvious issues

Reviews say no from what I read

No it doesn’t, can confirm

Basically these were high end networked devises, the company went bust, patched it to bluetooth only and then sold all their stock off dirt cheap.
Has it been a month already Every time this 'deal' pops up I think about getting one.
In response to comment above, no that's not true. As far as I'm aware it became clear to the developers that it wasn't going to work so they released a firmware enabling Spotify Connect and disabling their intended streaming services. So it has Spotify Connect and Airplay in addition to Bluetooth. Whether that lasts forever or not is debatable I suppose, since Spotify or Apple could make some vast changes and perhaps no-one will update this device.
