1981 riots in Hyson Green[edit]Further information: 1981 England riots
In 1981, there were serious riots across many major cities in England, including Nottingham on the weekend of 10 to 12 July. The main motives for the riots were related to racial tension and inner-city deprivation, together with a distrust of the police and ‘authority’ in general. The riots started on the Friday night on the Radford Road in response to a huge build up of police presence, and moved over to the flats in the early hours of Saturday morning. On the Saturday night the riots moved to the city centre when racists from outside the town had attacked blacks under the cover of the riots. The fighting began as a confrontation with the police using stones and petrol bombs, with shop windows only being broken ‘accidentally’ – but looting developed later; the rioters were always of mixed races, ages, employed and unemployed. Petrol bombs were made and thrown but an early attempt to torch the flats was successfully resisted by the residents. Over 100 people were arrested by the police, but only one man was charged.[12]

It hasnt improved much in my opinion

In short, a bunch of non-contributing yahoos with chips on their shoulders, going out wrecking and stealing. It's a way of life for some.

What are you on about? I go here nearly every day. It's just an Asda. The area isn't that bad, you make it sound like Baghdad.

I live in Hyson Green and have not been down that stretch of Radford Road for years, but this does not surprise me at all. The majority of people who live around here are decent and honest, but there are some very unpleasant and anti-social characters who make life a misery. The streets are filthy, and as other commentators have posted the large number of street drinkers who are out and about at all hours of the day and night make the area feel very unsafe especially if you are female. I wish the Post would run a feature on the park near Asda that is always crammed with drinkers (apart from when the weather is really bad) . Everybody around here hates it, but what do NCC do? nothing of course. I never go out alone around here after dark, it feels dangerous, maybe this is not wholly rational but there are so many groups of men just hanging around for no apparent reason, It is such a shame as this could have been a good area, lots of shops, schools, the Mary Potter Centre, the art exchange, quite a few cafes, good transport links, close to the city but I for one have had enough and plan to move this year as it will never get any better
