Age of Empires II - HD Edition - £3.74 @ Steam

Found 2nd Dec 2013
Part of the ongoing Steam sale, Age of Empires II - HD Edition is just £3.74 for the next 24 hours! As it's a timeless classic and this new remastered version (released in April this year) is usually £14.99 (and I'm sure it was £19.99 until recently), this seems to be the best deal of the whole sale so far! At this price you'll certainly never regret having digital access to this game for the rest of your life. Remember that the HD Edition includes Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and The Conquerors expansion pack.

For an extra £2 (£5.74 total!) you also get the newly released expansion pack - The Forgotten (usually £6.99 on its own). This was originally released in December 2012 as 'Forgotten Empires', a free fan made expansion for the original Age of Empires II, but has since been made official and remastered to work with the HD edition of the game.

If you have friends, you can buy a 4 pack of AoEII HD for £11.74, which works out at £2.94 per copy. (Although sadly there's no 4 pack of the game + expansion, so if you and your 3 friends want the expansion as well you're better off all buying it with the game at £5.74 as it's £3.49 on its own.)

If that isn't enough Age of Empires for you, the legacy bundle, which includes AoEII HD and Age of Empires III: Complete Collection (AoEIII + its 2 expansion packs).

So what are you waiting for?! See you on multiplayer!

UPDATE - Deal was supposed to expire today (3rd) but has been extended for another 24 hours as a 'Daily Deal'!

Legacy Bundle is a bargain! HOT

Does anyone even play this? Was on a month ago and could hardly find a game.

thanks

Thanks OP. bought legacy bundle. my favourite game.

I bought the fiver pack with the expansion. Been waiting an age for this to come down, put so many hours into this back in the day.

Thanks, bought legacy bundle

the new expansion pack is rubbish. great game tho and still a reasonable amount of people play this on line.

buy the original game from somewhere else...

this steam version is the ugly child you did not want... these guys stole every idea... inc the expansion from the community repackaged it... then sell it on steam in an uglier form... avoid at all costs. buy the original... and play on voobly.com for free !

is the multiplayer played over steam?

God, this brings back some fond memories of playing this in the office across the LAN... err, I mean, working in the office.

Heat.

I have played on a friends PC and I am sure something was wrong with it. It wasn't particularly good graphics, it wasn't the same as what I played years ago. It was a let down. Like others I found it to be ugly...

This is going to sound stupid, but how the hell do you play the actual campaign?

There's singleplayer (Which just looks like you vs AI), then two other types of campaign.
Looks nothing like the AOE 2 I remember back in the day

I sort of know what you mean - I've been putting off buying it all year because the HD Edition isn't really anything more than the original version with the xOmicron patch applied and the expansion was originally free. I've been playing my original copy like that for a while but I have friends who play the HD version on Steam. I don't mind paying £3 for the game again, even though I've owned it since 1999, and although the expansion was originally free I don't mind paying £3 for that either - a lot of work went into it. But have they made any other changes? How is it ugly? Have they retextured everything as well?

It starts in Forgotten mode by default, so clicking 'Single Player' gives you the option of 'Standard Game', which is skirmish, and 'The Forgotten Campaigns'. If you click 'Play HD Edition' at the top centre of the screen it will switch to The Age of Kings/The Conquerors.

Bought this earlier this evening, this is going to take me back to my uni days of playing AoE2 on the house LAN until stupid o clock. Nobody used to win either, we'd just build triple thick castle walls, max out the unit count and then watch each other hopelessly try to breach the defences. Grrrrrreat days. :-)

Oh, obligatory meme reference:

I just installed my original copy alongside the HD version and made this comparison screenshot of the first level of The Conquerors -

Nothing has really changed. 'HD' basically refers to the fact that you can now play in HD resolutions, getting more on the screen (making everything look smaller but you have to scroll around less). The main visual difference is that the shadows are a lot softer and things like trees and grass look smoother. The actual buildings and units don't see to have changed at all.

I think this is a great deal now it's gone 75%. It feels right at this price considering its age. I like that comparison of old and new. Should put peoples mind at ease if considering it after the earlier scare mongering in the thread.

This is on my wishlist but I'm going to be good. This is strictly a nostalgia buy and got too many games stacking up for that but I vill have zis one day, you marking my wurds !

will it work on a mac?

No mac support unfortunately, was going to ask the same question. I'm going to get it and play using parallels desktop

Interesting to see that it's not the game that now looks crappy it's more people's rose tinted memories are hazy and the game hasn't actually changed.

Wow thanks, I now have AOE 3 complete. Worth £7.50p with AOE 2hd thrown in as well.

That's very true. In my mind I have these amazing recollections of things like Deus Ex and Thief 1 but then you see them and the shock! Was it really that bad? no! lol Then you go through that process of trying to understand how you ever thought this was so realistic and at the time, it really was. Strange things those graphics.

Taken a punt, thanks for the spot!

It is still an awesome game!

Anyone who has been playing lately though aren't matched with newer players though, because there is a matchmaking system. Basically you're paying for the multiplayer services, which is fair enough.

what's it like compared to AoE3?

Put an average girl in a room full of stunners and she'll not be noticed, put an average girl in a room full of mingers and suddenly she is the stunner!

Survival of the 'fittest'!

Bought this yesterday. Awesome game! We used to play it in office lan after the office hours.. fun days

Heat added:) Classic

Accept on a modern monitor it sucks as 1280 x 1024 is the highest supported resolution.

Yes you can patch it to any resolution you want thanks to some decent community work BUT then you can't play it online so easily as it looks like you are cheating...

I bought this for £15 recently and while I feel a little ripped off, I was fully aware that I was paying for the online Steam community/ease of multiplayer with friends.

I will be buying 4 x the game and giving them out for Christmas, hoping to get some games with friends soon.

Spent many hours on this growing up playing competitive matches. Bought!

HD like others have said, is just native support for widescreen resolutions (and multi monitor setup), but let's face it, AOE II graphics have always been pretty comfortable to play on.

I recommend it to true fans looking to make playing a timeless classic that little bit easier...
- You don't need to worry about those two discs going missing
- Its a small game to download by today's standards at just over 1GB
- Online matchmaking natively built in saves time installing third party software... Other than steam.

It's different with different games too. The Unreal Engine has always been cutting edge, and Deus Ex was built on a modified version of the original Unreal Engine and was really demanding back in the day - I remember my old PC struggling with it. Now you look at it and, while it doesn't look terrible, everything is kind of muddy and hazy and what looked totally realistic in 2002 now looks clunky and plain.

Age of Empires II has aged extremely well, though. Possibly because 2D isometric graphics like this have aged much better than early 3D graphics. I think the reason that people think it looks so different is, as you say, simply because they have the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia on, or because the 'HD' is not a full graphical overhaul - it's simply support for HD resolutions, which means you're getting the same sprites at the same size but on a bigger screen, meaning you can see much more of the map/battlefield at one time. So maybe you're used to one unit filling the screen, looking all pixely, and now you have 10 units on the screen looking much smaller. That can make a game look completely different, but it's still the same graphics!

thank you great price

wolololo

Got the AOE2 HD plus expansion deal as I already had AOE 3 Complete, pretty good deal imo ^_^

Anyone getting horrendous lag?

anybody got a 4 pack and could spare one copy?
