Air conditioning re gassing £40 at Halfords

Halfords offer a £40 re gassing service. Which is a flat rate and also due to new regulations have to check the system is not loosing has first. This is a flat rate so no matter how much gas you need it is the same price of £40. This is cheaper than most garages offer. I am aware there is a Groupon for ATS. But this was more convenient for me as I didn't have to book in just called in while passing, obviously dependent on if someone is free to do it. A cold deal for this hot weather.

Don't think this is particularly cheap. Leak check, clean and regas is £50 not £40. Groupon voucher for ATS is £36. Also don't have a great deal of confidence in Halfords garages...

Expensive. ats via groupon is much cheaper. Very rarely on offer
Just did my daughter's last weekend cost 60 quid .got some lame story gas has quadrupled in cost .some heat from me.
Its hot so will cost more.
I always got my old car topped up in march or april.
Cold weather so half price under £30.00.
£40 is not bad from Halfords. its not difficult to check and re-gas as its all done by machine. I had mine done last year via mr clutch and groupon £32 I think. but at least Halfords has more stores which is accessible to most.
Seems like all members have issues against Halfords, Kwikfit, Formula1, ATS etc (mostly fuelled by urban myth ,facebook etc ) .I think I have used all of these at some point in the past and if ever there was a problem it has been sorted immediately .

I understand some members don't really have a clue on car servicing etc , but if you know and understand what they should be doing (make them aware you do know !) and check they have done it then there is never a problem these days (the penalties for skimping any service are just too severe ).

If you don't understand any facet of car servicing ,ask a knowledgeable friend (there really are literally dozens in any Pub ) . DONT follow and repeat Urban Myths or your equally clueless "Friends" on Facebook or the like - they may be clued up on the latest events in Love Island and EastEnders but wouldn't know a Catalytic converter from a carburetor but still reckon they know about car servicing

Just a few points on Air conditioning in a car , its nice to have but to be honest you rarely actually "need" it in this country (present time excepted ) . I have had aircon in 5 or 6 cars in the last 20 years and never needed a "regas" . The only car I "needed" it switched on was in a Peugeot 206 15 years ago which misted up in winter without it . AC has an on/off button (don't just leave it on "Auto" as it will decrease your fuel consumption between 5% -10% often for little noticeable effect !)

I switch mine on for about 15 mins per month , to exercise it , then it always works when I actually need it . I'm a mainly rural motorist and I accept that urban motorists may need theirs on and set to "recirculate" but switch it off when its not needed and see the increase in your mpg . Just a money saving tip to consider .
I bought a voucher from Groupon and went to ATS and they told me it will be £100 as i need different gas???
I thought that there was only one type of CO2 that goes in thought they was ripping me off,so voucher waste of money

I know alot about cars and alot of people's issues are warranted. Here is …I know alot about cars and alot of people's issues are warranted. Here is a link to the Groupon deal air con regassing as mentioned above. I voted hot because it's a deal and it takes time to post a deal. Cheersgroupon.co.uk/deals/ats-euromaster-ltd-11

I agree there can be issues with the "Fast fit" type garage services , but no more than with any garage (who generally charge much more) . My problem is that many folks think its "cool" to repeat urban myths (without knowing what they are talking about ) - hence the well known ones Halfords , Kwikfit , Formula 1 etc get unwarranted criticism , and we use them as they are normally much cheaper than a main dealer or franchised garage .

It's true, Toyota GT86 and some Landrover models have the more expensive gas and it's well over £100 so ATS is cheap at £100
you can check online what type do you need.

Its not C02 in your air conditioning system . Its a refrigerant gas . There are two main types in use . R134-a and from 2017 onwards R12344yf which is more expensive .

Seems to me that by saying "make them aware you do know" what these companies should be doing on a service etc. you are implying that if you appear naive you will get ripped off.

My local mechanic gives a debrief of what he has done (or not done) and why. I told him that I had a problem with my gearbox linkages over winter in the sub zero temperatures. He spent a good five minutes on the phone discussing what the problem could be and possible remedies and how much it would cost to replace the gear oil which he admitted may or may not be part of the solution.

I just don't think you get this level of attention from any chain. They have quotas to meet, some may be on commission or sales pressure and generally the workforce are quite transient compared to a well run independent garage.

IMO there are good individuals who have an honest approach working in these fast fit type places but I don't think they thrive because of pressure from management.

It is true, gas had gone up 4 fold this year, my local guy is honest and has started to charge £3 per 100ml on top of his £30 service charge for any additional needed after weighing what comes out.
Well I just gave them my £40. First time in 7 years and it's made a world of difference.
Appreciate the post
10pence per gram plus a service charge of £20 is the cheapest round this way.
Car takes 775g, had 15g removed and so only 760g was charged.
£96 all in 😪

Not a lame story, the price of the R134-a gas has increased recently due to an increase in tax applied, based upon it being an ozone depleting product (note anyone using AC throughout the year). At present ATS seem to be regassing based upon their existing stock, but I’d expect prices to increase soon.

R134a is NOT an ozone depleting substance. It replaced R12, which was. Also, using your air con doesn't mean the gas is any more likely to escape to atmosphere; in fact, the exact opposite is true. The gas in the system contains a lubricant, if you only use the air con infrequently, the lubricating oil does not circulate around the system, the seals dry out and you get leaks.

My mistake, I was getting confused with global warming potential. Regardless, I was referring to the increased cost of regassing, but thanks for the information.

This is basically what Halfords told me today.

So it's true to leave the AC button on throughout the year then?

No, just for 10 mins or so once or twice a month (even in winter ) is sufficient to exercise it . Think I said that earlier in the post .

Don't have to leave it on . But I'd run it for 5/10 minutes every two weeks at minimun to circulate the lubricant . I use mine even in winter anyway to demist the windows .

If you've got air con (cold button), use it when you need it, then periodically throught the colder months. If it's climate control, set your temperature and leave it on. I owned a Volvo for 18 years from brand new, never turned the climate control off and never had to regas it!
