I calling around locally for prices for regasing the A/C on my car. Halfords were the cheapest £30. Went to get it done last night went through the till at £9.99. The bloke was surprised when it came up with £9.99, he carried on telling me that they had done over 24 recharges since he clocked on and they have been going through at £29,99. If you need regasing do it while its £9,99. Im not sure if this is a national thing or not.

I have added my receipt as proof

Is this at Halfords Autocentre? as you've linked to normal Halfords store? and the re-gas at Halfords Autocentre is showing as £49 ?

Don't let those monkeys loose on your car

As of 1st April 2010 Halfords are required to provide a duty of ensuring air conditioning canisters can be recycled and refilled in an environmentally friendly manner. To comply with these regulations a fully refundable deposit of £10 will automatically be added to the retail price of this product. This deposit is refundable from your local store on return of an empty canister and a proof of purchase receipt dated after 1st April 2010.

Most Halfords do minor things at their stores ours is just a standard store give yr local store a ring ask them if they do Regas con

Good deal. You can't even buy the gas yourself for this price.

I wouldn't worry about Halfords doing this job as it hardly requires the skills of an F1 mechanic.

Would you care to elaborate on why we should steer clear? What are the risks?

They'll try to get you to order extra work plus they'll mess up the gas recharge.

The warning has been heard and utterly ignored

The process is simple:

1) unscrew low pressure port cap on aircon

2) connect gas can and press spray until dial goes into blue area

3) replace low pressure port cap

Of course, I'll be standing by to offer advice if needed.

However, this won't be happening as I called up the 3 nearest Halfords branches to me, and they aren't offering this deal.

****EDIT****

Just had a call back from the Halfords on Coral Park, Cambridge, and they'll do it for £9.99, so I'm booked in for this afternoon.

Thanks OP

Ah ok. I understand the 'get you in cheap and sell you extras', but how can they mess up the recharge? I thought it was done with a computer and it just pumps to the required/recommended pressure? I thought even a PFY could do it.

You got that wrong ;-)

EXTRA STEPS YOU MISSED:

Old gas needs to be drained; system integrity (leaks) needs checking; need to add sealant fluid along with the gas.

That's what a proper gas refill mechanic would do, whereas Halfrauds?

Of course, anyone who knows anything about regassing aircon will know this is complete nonsense and the system must have all the old gas completely removed first. Your explanation is exactly why Halfords will do it for this price and it is borderline criminal.

Top up may be more appropriate.

Yep that is correct. I hope you get what you deserve

Fair point. After all, I can't remember the last time I recharged my oil.

LOL, that is funniest thing I ever heard on this forum. Have you ever owned a car before? Do you understand the oil needs to be actually changed not just topped up? Just like the aircon gas does.

What's the problem with Halfords? I've had all my mechanical work done there - they offer a price match with local garages and the workshops all have viewing area. Never had any problem with workmanship and only used the price guarantee once in 3 years. Highly recommended.

Keep it up guys this is the most entertaining thread yet

You're just being ridiculous now, and I'm in far too good a mood to be playing with trolls.

Good day to you

Many people on here put down deals. Some people far to critical -I wonder if they would be as critical if someone on bus or train told them a deal

I have my aircon gas removed and replaced about once every 5 years. A top up mid-way for £9.99 isn't a bad idea to maintain cooling efficiency.

People here are using the engine oil analogy. You might drain your oil once a year, but you should be checking the level and topping it up once a month. An aircon top up is much the same thing.

AWFUL MIDDLETON HALFORDS

So my parents take their car in for an mot(pensioners) and they get a phone call saying it needed rear axle bushes….I then rang to confirm this as its very strange for a car with 45k on the clock. They quoted £360 to replace.Took it to a merc specialist for second opinion.5 technicians stood around the car laughing at the halfords assessment. They confirmed there was nothing wrong with the bushes and to prove this they would put it through an mot in their garage.I gave halfords the written report and a chance to rectify/explain…..more backtracking and maintained that they needed replacing.I then got the mot test done at mercedes specialist and it passed with flying colours.I have been advised to complain to VOSA.the manager had his chance to put things right.Halfords even tried to tell me that the car couldn't have an mot at any other test station as it had now gone down as a failure.

Advised me to replace parts that were new. Weymouth AUTOCENTRE

Happy with aircon service however they advised me to replace pollen filter without even looking at it. Filter was brand new replaced 2 days before.
This indicates that they are trained to sell and replace parts that are good only to make money.
They also checked my tyres for free and advised that tread depth is 6mm, it wes in fact brand new tyres fitted 1 day earlier with 8mm.
Won't use them for any repair in the future.

Ah, so it is only in every other aspect of customer service they get it wrong? Now I understand your thought processes.

“Halfords Autocentre Pontypridd”

Written on: 22/07/2014 by wales1975 (1 review written)

Took my car in for a fuel plus service and free safety check. It took 3 hours to complete. The safety report was horrifying, over £850 of repairs needed! 4 new tyres, new suspension arms, brake discs, new bulbs and wheel allignment needed.

I took the car for a second opinion at an independent garage. The report from Halfords was rubbished. Only one tyre needed changing due to a small crack on the side wall, all the other tyres had at least 4mm left on them. Brake discs were fine and pads had 10,000 mile of life. One suspension arm had the start of a slight crack in the gaiter and was replaced but all the rest was fine. ALL the bulbs on the car worked, so none were needed and no evidence of wheel allignment was needed. The independent garage charged me £109 for the work completed and they even fixed a leak in the exhaust that Halfords should have spotted. The mechanic went on to say even if they replaced all the parts that Halfords suggested, it should have only cost £360.

Overall Halfords were overcharging by £500 for parts and labour on the proposed works. To top it all off they were also lying about the need to change other parts. They wanted £55 to change a sidelight and a tail light, a job that wasn't even needed and even if it was would only cost £5 for the bulbs and take just a few minutes to do.

After an mot fail, you have 14 days to return to the same garage for retest, if memory serves me correct? The car can't be logged on at another mot station till after that date.

Mmmm, now I may be wrong, but you can only top up with the same gas already in the system. Unless it has been standardised in recent years. I would definitely check first.

I have given up trying to help people avoid disaster (accused of Trolling even)

So you can find out for yourselves, just like I did many years ago.
