AKAI: aren't they the Scottish hi-fi company?

Original Poster

I remember AKAI as a kid mainly old stack systems but they have been in the audio game for many many years (Says 80 yrs of Japanese Technology) It's show as well the bass on these is fantastic a really full rich sound, Great Bargain and a joy to share as I know you will not be disappointed...

also 3 years warranty + 2yrs if registered online, Must know there stuff!!

B&M can be very store specific with their stuff. Which store did you pick these up at ?
Cheers.

Ipswich store had 4+ sets left...

Akai used to be a good brand for audio products.

Then the consumer electronics part of the company went bust, and the brand name has been used for rebadged generic cheap electronics since then, nowhere near the same quality as they used to be.

Several years ago I made the mistake of buying an Akai branded MP3 player, thinking it would be decent, not realising it wasn't the same company any more.

The part of Akai that makes products for musicians (synths, drum machines, recording equipment etc) does have a decent reputation, presumably these headphones are made by them.

These are £49.99 on Akai website:

According to the documentation online and the box pictures by the OP, these have a mic built in - possibly the volume control on the cable is also the mic...?

Good deal if your local B&M has them!

Look awesome for the money!

Cant go wrong for that price,
I brought a AKAI vhs video recorder about 1986 cost me £600 oO was about 10 weeks of my wages at the time lol

will look out for these.... heat added

Couldn't find them in the Bridgend store.

Great find sir. Can't go wrong with headphones with a 40mm driver unit. You should pick another pair or so and put them away in the wardrobe for the future. Heat added.

Great find, just nipped out and bought a pair. Hot

Loads on the shelf at Saltash B&M by the way.

I thought akai was the budget brand of Sony? Or I could have dreamt it......

Are you mistaking with Aiwa? Not in any way a "budget brand of Sony" but were bought out by Sony before being dissolved as a brand name entirely.

"Voucher Mama" is gonna check out this for me tomorrow....fingers crossed!

Didn't know AKAI is still around,I missed AKAI and also AIWA..great Japanese brands..heat added.

Loads in store at Didcot

typical needed a pair last week and bought goodmans out of b&m and to be fair there ok, not that i'm an expert though

?

Thanks for posting Mxr 450. I weathered the storm earlier to buy a pair as a stocking filler.

There isn't really a lot of info on the Akai site and I can't find any write ups. Can you tell me if they have a volume control on the cord please.

I didn't want to open the box, have just wrapped up and hidden away for Christmas.

thanks OP
still some in Bridgend....
just bought one....

That's ok. They will be used on my daughters laptop, she can just change the volume on that.

Ta.

Bought last one from Cardiff, Newport Rd, but I'm taking them back. They're good, but not brilliant. Sound quality is OK, as is build quality. But not a Pro headphone. Good for a cheap set, certainly not overpriced, but not for me. Cheers

Plenty in Robroyston still.
Got aome erlier

None in Boston or Wisbech

Well worth £9 but not £50 which is what they are on www.akaionline.co

Anybody know what they mean by "product code" when filling out the warranty?
There's an SKU and a batch number on the box but nothing stating "product code"

I bought a set from the Birmingham store, they are truly awful sounding, they sound like £8.99 headphones. Stick with whichever ones you have as these are no better

Headphones are very subjective but in this case i don't see how they could be termed good. They sound like a skype headset or the headphone equivalent of a small Bluetooth speaker

Avoid wasting £9 like I did

Compared these with a pair of Sennheiser HD202 and they are pretty good for £9. The HD202 have a bit more bass, but these Akai are a nice design and I like the single cord. Voted hot.

Kinda agree that these headphones do sound like budget headphones but for this price they can't be beaten. I've heard worse for twice the money.

Good build, braided single cable and a remote thrown in for good measure.

Not for bassheads. Good detail and mid-centric. These won't blow you away but for £9 keep your expectations realistic and you won't be disappointed.

Oh and by the way cushioning isn't great. Sore ears after half hour I think.

Good build, braided single cable and a remote thrown in for good measure.

Sorry, not opened mine yet as for Christmas, what do you mean by ' a remote ' ?

Its an inline control button with built in microphone. Answer phone calls or voice control, at the click of a button.

The remote/Mic can pause and play music and also answer calls...strange they didn't incorporate a volume though...

I'm well happy with mine, and the money is a bonus...

I know i should have known better at that price but the comments made them sound better than the price suggested which for me, they aren't. I suppose it is subjective. I do have a couple of their guitar fx pedals which are effectively rebadged units from the cheap (and slightly unreliabl) Chinese manufacturer Biyang, but they do sound good so I was optimistic.

Thanks for the info ref the remote folks. I am sure she will be happy with them.

No luck in Swindon store.
