First post so be gentle.

Ive just ordered this. It’s the Alcatel A3. Its no iphone X

but at £79.99 (plus £10 topup) but then with £50 cashback when you trade in

your old smart phone AND £5 quidco, plus sell the unwanted top up for just

under £10, brings the price down to around £27 for this phone (assuming you

sell the £10 voucher for £8)

Bit of a faff I know but for someone wanting a cheap smart

phone, I thought it was a good deal. Cashback has already tracked for me at £5

CPW's offer: "Buy the Acatel A3 or A5 LED and get £50 cashback when you trade in your old working phone!

Sound good? Here's all you need to know:

1. Purchase an Alcatel A3 or A5 LED from us on a pay monthly, upgrade, pay as you go or SIM free from 1st October to 31st December 2017.

Good deal though - for any good reason claim is declined, you will stuck with this as return period will be expired!!!

Is the £10 top up a one off or is it monthly?

I have assumed it was a one off as its pay as you go, i didn't think it would be monthly.

I'm not sure how CPW work this? maybe it's locked to whatever network you choose because they are charging £129.99 for sim free. Maybe someone who knows could clarify?

Just been on their live chat:

Wayne at 16:11, Oct 27:
Good day James, how are you?

James at 16:08, Oct 27:
Hi Wayne, i'm looking at the alcatel A3 with the £50 cackback offer. I am wanting the phone on pay and go but i'm just checking to see, is the £10 payment a monthly payment or a one off payment, as i have my own sim card i'd want to put into the phone when i recieve it

Wayne at 16:12, Oct 27:
The £10 top up is once off, and you don't need to use the SIM we provide you with, you can use your own SIM.

James at 16:10, Oct 27:
would the phone be unlocked already? i have read that carphone warehouse phones are unlocked, would this be the case?

Wayne at 16:13, Oct 27:
Yes, all of our phones are unlocked, so you can use any network.

James at 16:11, Oct 27:
thank you Wayne, thats all i need to know

I wouldn't count on the cashback - every time I have gone through TCB or Quidco for a CPW purchase I have had an email claiming there is a problem with my credit card and I have to phone them to complete the sale. The same credit card details then work fine but the cashback is rejected as the sale was not completed online.

I got the P10 Lite from them recently, had the credit card payment rejected by my bank, then got a text from CPW to phone them. Still tracked the cashback and paid out too.

my order has gone through just fine. Not too fussed even if i dont get the £5 so long as i get the £50 back for trading in an old smartphone!

Well done James for your post...

At £27-30, assuming (big big big assumption) it all goes through, i reckon it would be priced appropriately for a Quad core, 720P ,1-2GB of ram phone.

If it was priced lower lets say lower than £20 , then in my eyes that would class as a deal. we've had the Pixi 4 @ £10 and lenovo B @ £20

Interestingly enough, this phone is priced higher @ £89.99 than the ZTE blade A512, even though the latter has slightly better specs ( 1.4GHz quad processor and 2GB of ram) albeit the alcatel has fingerprint and compass sensors.

Still, good effort for posting, it might help someone in making their decision.

as for your ..." I'm wanting".... business...well, we can't just let you get away with that can we?

Won't the £10 come as a £10 sim and not a voucher?

Think these were £40 in Sainsbury's Leicester, they had lots of half price phones

Where did you find the list?

Personally this seems a bit risky to me. I imagine a lot of claims will be rejected and then your stuck with a rubbish ouo e you've paid over the odds for

It will be on a SIM, but won't be £10 credit, it will be a bundle of minutes, texts and data which lasts for 30 days.

If you get one on EE send the text 'STOP PACK' to 150 as soon as you put the SIM inside the phone. This will stop the 30-day bundle from activating, so you can use the £10 credit as you wish, and it won't expire after 30 days.

That's actually quite useful because I've bought phone from CPW before and just binned the sim (or gave it away).

I've no interest in this deal but gave some heat as it may be useful for some. Just thought I'd query the O/P when he say's the top up is worth £8 as a voucher.

Credit can be used for PSN or donate to charity iirc which would be better use for me than binning the sims.

Can you still use mobile credit on PSN? I have never seen the option to pay via mobile at checkout,i have seen some cached pages on google from last year, can anyone confirm if they have used this method of payment on PSN recently?Just rechecked on console as no option on PC.EE not supported, shame.Tried twice and got error messages.

Yes, I've purchased games from PSN using unwanted PAYG credit.

I've had a 512Mb RAM phone in the past. I'd definitely have 1.5Gb over 512Mb, & so would the vast majority in a similar situation I'd imagine.

I've had 512mb/1gb & now 2GB

512mb would be unusable in 2017. 1gb would creak. 1.5gb possibly struggle soon

My second of last phone was an Alcatel. It was great at the beginning but then it began to install all sorts of rubbish on itself without asking permission. Many of the Apps were duplicates of what was already on there and some took up a lot of space on the home pages. Really affected the performance of the phone so in the end I ditched it. Was only 3 months old in the end.

My neighbour had been using my old, donated 512Mb phone for over a year, until it broke recently. He was a light user, so didn't need anything more. So really, all depends on the user & his/her needs.

What old phone are you going to trade in?

I have a really rubbish 3" screen phone with a resistive screen & Android 2.6 which I'm planning on sending in. Hope they don't mind it having Cyanogenmod instead of the stock OS!

Thanks, how are you finding the A3's main camera quality? Anywhere as good as the S2's?

S2 camera quality is better. I reviewed this and the Vodafone Smart N8 (which is a variant of the A3). Both have rubbish camera cameras (poor dynamic range, focus issues, over-sharpening, dull colours, poor in low light). I compared them with the Moto G3 and G2, and found that even the G2 captures better images.

Yes on EE, why would you presume not? I've purchased PSN wallet credit with O2, EE, and Vodafone SIM cards. It isn't an option which shows up at checkout, you have to add the funds to your PSN account first.

Go to the PSN site and go to Add Funds to Wallet. From there you can choose to top up using your mobile.

The only thing to note is that in order to purchase the credit you have to text 'Y' to the number, which obviously costs you about £0.20, so you would only be able to buy £5 credit, which would leave you with £4.80 to spend elsewhere (like on something from Google Play). The transaction would fail if you attempted to buy £10 credit as you would technically only have £9.80 credit remaining.

I have tried a few times since November last year.Have £19 EE credit, trying to buy a £15 PSN credit, I send the text confirmation and then the screen comes up with an error message "Sorry your payment failed. No charges were made".
Will fire up another email to Sony.

Just tried it to buy a £5 wallet credit (had an old EE SIM with £6ish on it) and it went through OK.

It might be EE that are blocking it. When I tried it on a Vodafone SIM last year it kept failing, which was because Vodafone had set up a block on the SIM for third party purchases (it didn't work for Google Play, Microsoft Store or for PSN credit), I had to contact them to remove the block.

Also worth adding that if you have an eligible O2 or EE SIM, you can get this as a PAYG Upgrade via them and skip the £10 top up.
