Pretty sure you need 2GB of RAM for the Android version.

2GB is recommended, not … 2GB is recommended, not requiredhttps://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/4t7vv8/how_well_will_1gb_of_ram_work/https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/4szl4i/anyone_been_able_to_play_with_an_android_phone/

Lots of conflicting info out there.

makeuseof.com/tag…go/

"The problem is that Pokemon Go requires a minimum 2GB of RAM. If you have less than that, you won’t be able to download it through the Google Play store and will be forced to acquire the APK from an unofficial source and sideload it.

This is less than ideal, as it can expose your phone to malware. There have already been documented examples of malware masquerading as Pokemon Go APKs. It also means you won’t receive updates as they’re released. The current state of Pokemon Go could charitably be described as rough. It’s inevitable that in the coming months, much-needed patches and performance updates will be released.

You’re also likely to encounter significant performance issues, with gameplay being stuttery and sluggish."

I'm not sure this Alcatel Pixi is the best bet for a resource intensive game
Worth a punt for 40 quid.

No. I went to school and learnt that you don't start a sentence with so.
The question regarding pokemon go also requires a gyroscope which this may not have.

Agreed.

A recommended Pokemon Go device looks like this:

2GB RAM
Huge Battery
Gyro

Such a device is not cheap (around £150 for a G4)

However for £40 it's a decent enough child's phone.
OP - you need to add "Locked to Virgin" in there somewhere.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a budget (sub £90) handset that's from a UK seller? I said I'd look for my friends kid who's needing one soon. Ideally, something with a sub 5" screen. Doesn't need to be octa core or a 20mp camera etc!

what about Virgin KAZAM Trooper 540 or EE ROOK Mobile Phone
Edited by: "leeparsons" 21st Jul 2016
I was looking at the lenovo k3 note for my daughter on ebay it is upgradeable to marshmallow and looks like it ticks all the boxes for pokemon go why is it when I actually need a cheapo phone they are never available as a good deal like that doogee x5 pro or whatever was £35 but not sure if it is upto pokemon either
leeparsons

what about Virgin KAZAM Trooper 540 or EE ROOK Mobile Phone

The Trooper is very bad (£30)
4" 480p
3.2 mp rear/0.3mp front camera
512mb ram/4gb rom
1 ghz dual core
android 4.4
battery 1400mAh

ee rook is better (£40)
4" 480p
8 gb rom/1gb ram
1 ghz quad core
android 5.1
5mp rear/0.3mp front camera
1500 mAh battery
4G lte support

There is also the Vodafone Smart Speed 6 (also £40):
4.5" 480p
quad core 1 GHz
8 GB ROM/1GB RAM
5 mp/2p cameras
1780 mAh battery
Android 5.1
LTE

Comparing this with the Smart Speed
Android 6 vs 5.1
5" vs 4.5"
2000 mAh removable vs 1780 mAh non-removable
MT6735 CPU quad core @ 1.3 GHz vs 1.0 GHz
no LTE vs LTE
8mp autofocus rear camera vs 5mp non-autofocus
5mp led flash front camera vs 2mp non-flash front camera
I sold my smart ultra 6 recently but that didn't have gyro either does it need gyro

Wouldn't it be easier just to get a cheap android tablet for that?
shikztheurbanlegend

A 480p screen of entry level quality with regards to colour, brightness etc so close to your eyes is not gonna be pretty, on a 5" device you'd perhaps be OK with 720p though...depends how particular you are about the sharpness of the content!

On the topic of APKs, they don't have to be risky, just ask a pal with it (Pokémon Go, of course!) installed to extract the apk using an app from the store.

Remember, each time there's an update you'll need to reinstall via apk, as it won't update through the store

I guess you don't know/understand the concept of Pokemon Go?!

It's a VR game designed to get people outdoors. Nobbing about with a tablet that likely has no data connection - and possibly no giro or GPS - is going to make for a rather hobbled Pokemon experience
pocket monster go, doesn't require 2gb, depends on processor and os. try and test in the store, if possible
Does that discount code work with this?
Alcatel rubbish unless you just want a phone for calls and texts. My wife had one, never heard the last of it!

£35 in ASDA,

I also got one for the same price from Asda, Morley. It was locked to Virgin but I got it unlocked on a certain auction site for 99p.

To be honest mate, you don't know what your talking about. Some phones are good some are bad. The problem with small mind idiots like you, is the name. All you guys want is apple, which is far less superior to android. But i wont go into that debate. For the price point, you show me a 5" model for around that price. Samsungs are great, but they are double this. The end of day, i have learned a £30-40 for a phone, is the modest I pay. Your end up killing it, or it will break. So not worth the waste of cash

No I'm not familiar with that game because

A) I'm over 21 years old
B) I don't have any kids
C) I'm not a bandwagon jumping sad case.

I could never make do with a 40 quid phone. Right now I use one with a Snapdragon 616 and 2GB RAM that cost me £130 and it's a bit too slow for me.

How old are you? I like to say it's age related thing. Where after chasing tech, you get bored of wasting monies. But i think this model, only fits to me i am afraid. lol.
Also something to do with having a tumour as well, has part to play in me not valuing model phones much.
