ALDI now takes American Express! Collect AMEX points on your weekly shop !

This popped up in my American Express app and was surprised, as now we can start to collect AMEX points while saving cash on cheap shopping!

It feels like not so long ago ALDI and Lidl didn’t even take credit cards. Alas, no word on Lidl yet but fingers crossed they will follow suit!

Happy shopping all!

Edit: Not sure what’s going on, some mod deleted this deal, just as it went hot and now it has come back, for how long who knows!

Do Aldi accept AMEX contactless or are they like Asda chip-and-pin only? Heat anyway!
This is very hot...I got rid of my Amex card few years ago as not many places will accept it. Iam at Aldi weekly so I might apply for another card now
Great news, thanks

Good cashback available at TCB/Quidco/Imutual for applications for new amex cards.
Sadly Aldi seem to be putting up their prices - perhaps to pay for the exorbitant Amex charges. Milk is actually cheaper at our local Co-op than our local Aldi. The Co-op is closer too - and takes cards, and gives Divi, and gives student discount so who gives a toss about Amex?.

Or maybe they are reducing their prices to compete? Co-op are a no-show nowadays. Plus co-op accept amex too i'm pretty sure so you could get an even better deal

Scorching hot! Finally decent cash back on the food shop
This is good news indeed - can finally get rid of some of the nonsense cards i was carrying because of Aldi not accepting Amex
Mine was accepted at Dunston, Gateshead branch this afternoon.

Staff including a manager who overheard didn't know anything about it and said they don't accept Amex but after I mentioned this thread they said to give it a try and it worked.

Thanks for the heads up op, wouldn't have know about this otherwise.
Excellent news!
Is this actually for the UK, or just Germany? If so, what's the start date? Website still shows this, and online it's not taking Amex:

In store we accept:

  • Cash
  • Cards through chip and pin as well as contactless if enabled on customer’s card: Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Delta Electron
  • Contactless Mobile payments: Apple pay and Android pay
Unfortunately we do not accept cheques.

Online we accept:

  • Cards: Visa and Mastercard only
Unfortunately we do not currently accept any other forms of payment online, including Maestro, Paypal and BACS.
Heat thank you, I don't have to remember my other card number now

Agree website seems out of date, also seems like ALDI staff haven’t all been told according to @LankyChris experience too.

The alert came from the Amex app and does state in-store only alas and can confirm it does work when you try and pay!
Saw a poster in store this morning (Manchester White City) advertising using Apple Pay. Had logos of all main cards incl amex so gave it a go at the till. Used amex contactless which worked fine, and got my 1.5 avios per pound. Happy days
I heard on the radio a few weeks ago that charges would be abolished for credit cards. Any business cannot charge extra for you using credit cards. I dont know if it works for flights etc. normally i get charged 2% extra if paying insurance on CC. Last week I didn't. Same applies for Amex.
I've never been able to sign up to that Amex points scheme with my Platinum cashback card. If I log in to enrol for the points scheme it just redirects me to my statements...

Am I missing something? Theres no obvious place to register for it.

I think that they are two different rewards schemes. Platinum cashback cards build a pot of cashback while other cards reward you in the form of points, which you then redeem.

Not sure where u live but the all Asda stores I have been in in the last year use contactless. Around my area and other towns I have been to aswell
Why is this a deal if u can use a Amex card. Shall I put up loads of shops saying this accept cash or visa or electron etc etc seems very odd to be out in deals section.

You get 5% cashback on amex platinum for first 3 months then 1.5% ish ongoing after that.
The gold gives you £150 worth of points if you spend £2,000 in your first 3 months.
If they accept the card and you shop there anyway it's a great perk! Worthy of posting as a deal as it will give people money back!

Do you accept Amex? Where are you getting the info from regarding their exorbitant charges?
Amex aka American Express cards are a waste of time, most places do not accept them, if you don’t have one keep it that way !
Now if only Pamela Stephenson wannabes worked at Aldi

Their fees aren't exorbitant as the other guy said. That's my point. To say Aldi are increasing their prices due to accepting Amex is a bit daft..

Theres been some complaints about American Express and their rewards.

"Behind every ostrich-, crocodile-, and alligator-skin accessory is a short, miserable life of deprivation and a violent death—yet American Express continues offering these items as rewards for their cardholders."

Members are asked to contact American Express to ask them to stop this. Worth a few minutes effort

It’s a deal because amex platinum gives me 1% cashback on all purchases. I have Never shopped at Aldi myself but I may pop in one day to buy some lemons or something. Every penny in cashback helps.

Asda in Keighley is my nearest and they do not take Amex contactless. The machine gives the famous double-beep and you have to chip-and-pin it. Same for my friends who use Amex. Annoying but contactless works for every other card I own, just not Amex.

Oh rite must be a Amex issue at that store then thought u meant all contactless cards.
Thanks for posting OP, I always end up shopping elsewhere as tend to use Amex for all shopping so it's great news for us!

I have found that Amex contactless never works in an ASDA, I'm always having to enter the pin. Must be a issue with the terminals and Amex cards.
Not accepting Amex instore today - contactless or otherwise. Staff know about the change, but can't (obviously) persuade the tills to take it.
Answering my own question Aldi are taking Amex contactless although the bod on the till said they had not been told about it...
Just tweeted Aldi and they confirmed ALL stores to accept AMEX from 7th Febuary.

Most places? Do you even have one? I recently got one and all the major supermarkets, fuel stations, air lines, cpffwe shops, and chain restaurants accept amex. In fact, it seems like very few don't accept them. So what do you mean by most places?
ALDI UK stores are indeed accepting Amex contact and contactless from 7th as smithers states above however NI will have to wait a few more weeks as they roll-out the Irish terminal updates
700+ for Aldi acccepting Amex
