Thanks OP - I have invested in the Energenie system throughout my house. Here's some info that'll help future buyers:

1: Energenie works OK but has it's flaws.

2: Do not rely on the plugs actually working when you ask them to. A lot of the time, I try to turn on my TV via Alexa (to which it can connect), or via the app, to no avail. It acts as though it has done it, but in reality, has done nothing.

3: The support is R U B B I S H. Expect to jump through hoops just to get a RMA approval.

4: The price is low for a reason. The quality is not there. It's a flawed system that does not work 100% of the time. Spent a little bit more for a known brand that is well established.

Energenie no good. Don't bother.

Is this a problem with the hub itself? I thought the plugs were a basic 433MHz control, and do they work correctly just with the key remote? I thought of getting some of these plugs to use with the Pi mote, any experience of using that?
finally, would the Sonoff RT bridge not work instead of the more expensive Energenie hub?

I wish I hadn't bothered with these months back! Terrible. I find myself shouting at Alexa TURN OFF LAMPS FFS

Thanks for the comments chaps, did order this morning and added heat but now cancelled as I can do without carp electronics to ruin the Alexa experience

These are garbage. Don't buy them! I've had 2 lots of 3. Both went back. Very unresponsive! It's a lottery whether they switch on or off. Even the energenie light switches and sockets I have are the same. Very poor products. I use tp-link ones now and yes they're more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Remote works fine, the hub, does not. It's OK for standard installations that do not heavily rely on the plugs "working" but for me, if I buy something, I want it to work 100% of the time, for every single command.

Likewise. Lost faith, and moved to the Tradfri IKEA Lights directly.

OK, so the hub is the problem. I'm getting a Sonoff RT bridge anyway for other 433MHz devices, I'll try it with some Energenie dumb on/off plugs as well. The basic tech in the plugs is fine, I have less faith in cloud server linked tech.
