Just an update on this and some of the current offers on Alexa devices as some may not be aware

Introducing Alexa calling and messaging - Alexa calling and messaging is available across the Echo family. You can ask Alexa to call or message anyone with a supported Echo device, Fire Tablet or the Alexa App on their smartphone. When you're busy making dinner, just ask Alexa to place a call to Mum or send a quick voice message to a friend. You can also enable Drop In for when you want to instantly connect with other Echo devices in your home, or your closest family and friends.

Current Amazon Echo offers

Hands-free calling

Making calls with Alexa is easy. Once you’ve synced your contacts in the Alexa App, just ask Alexa to place a call. With Echo Show or Echo Spot, supported tablets (including Fire Tablets) or the Alexa App, you’ll also be able to make video calls at no additonal cost.

Alexa will let you know when someone is calling, by displaying a green light ring on your supported Echo device. You can ask Alexa to answer or ignore the call.

Drop In

Drop In is a feature for the special cases when you want to connect quickly with your closest family and friends or other Echo devices in your home. For example, you can drop in from your supported Echo device, tablet (including Fire Tablets) or a smartphone to ask what time dinner will be ready, see the baby’s nursery, or check in with a close relative. With Drop In, you’re always in control – turn it on or off at any time, select who is allowed to drop in on you and choose which devices are available for Drop In

You can call or message any contact who also has the free Alexa App on their smartphone or tablet (including Fire Tablets), an Echo Dot, Amazon Echo, Echo Plus or Echo Show, and has enabled Alexa calling and messaging and verified their mobile number. Once you update the Alexa App (iOS 9.0 or higher, Android 5.0 or higher), you can see which contacts have also enabled Alexa calling and messaging. Don’t see your friends or family in the app? Just send them a link to this page to help them get started.

This is a half hearted attempt from Amazon to play catch up to Google Home which can call any UK landline or mobile free, regardless if they have a Google home device.

With the Alexa the other person also needs an Alexa device or the app on their mobile.
Which is the same as the drop in feature which already does this.
You "Echo, Call the Mrs, oh love get my special whisky glass and put some crushed ice in yeah, pronto"
Mrs "Echo, Get it yourself you lazy ***"

I've been using it for the past few months but changed to the Google home once they enabled free calling. I was hoping Amazon was going to catch up but nope... I guess I'll have to wait
This feature released in October last year.
In light of the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal you should ask yourselves what are Amazon and Google doing with your address book, contact and calling data that makes it worth them offering free calls?
as mentioned above with Google Home you can call any UK landline or mobile free, regardless if they have a Google home device which is much better in this usage case.
And here was me thinking that Amazon had replicated Google but it's just old news instead.
Not newl, not free 'calls' in the sense that people expect.
This has been there for a while. Whereas the Google home can call mobiles and landlines without the need for an app.

They are trying to get people to buy the device by offering free calls.

If enough people get them we will then not be as reliant on traditional phone lines.
Hence people spending more money on these devices I the long run.

Personally I would like to call businesses for example Sky and let Alexa queue in the background and alert me when an agent is available
You’ve been able to call other echo devices for a while this isn’t new

Zuckerberg answered in his congressional hearing that they do not do any targeting based on audio and that they don’t record audio either.
The andvantage over Google is that you can call to your Alexa, you cannot call to your Google home.
This is an offer??

But you don't have to give them permission to collect/use them.

Well, if you give them permission to, but you don't have to.

How come when I call myself from my alexa, my phone doesn't ring? I have the Alexa app. Would be useful for finding phone when I misplace it

Hmm, well, that's probably the issue, then!

I reboot my mobile every night, never open the app, and it all still works as expected (i.e. calling from my Echo results in my mobile ringing).
I don't know if the Alexa app starts automatically after a reboot (it probably does). Maybe you have a setting that stops Alexa from starting automatically?

I don't know how else the app on your mobile would be expected to work if you close it, though. Also, if you have reasonably recent mobile, I am pretty certain you don't have to close all the apps - I read that you say it's a habit, but I think you will have to keep the Alexa app running if you want it to, you know, work.
Good direction by Amazon, but not yet there wrt this feature. We need free calls from an amazon device to ANY number!
