These are very, very heavy. I can't pick them up with one hand.

They are indeed heavy. I have the 17 Inch model. But I didn't buy it cos it was light. It's an awesome gaming machine that works for what I wanted ir
Dell outlet is where you should grab these. Got an i7, 7700 15” for less than £1000 last year. Not a single mark on it

My last laptop wasn't light. It was 5kg+, but I didn't appreciate how heavy a laptop could be until I used one of these. It's in the couldn't use on my lap, barely portable category.

Your mileage may vary.
I grabbed similar spec from eBay, 4 months old, 3 year warranty. £800 only difference mine only came with 8GB RAM. Great machine though
Cheaper to build one yourself. Silverstone do a few mini-itx cases with a footprint no larger than this.

Any recommendations for a better laptop for same/less money?

Acer Predator £1500 but is a 6th gen I7 and heavier.

Scan 3XS £1300 - any opinions?

Gigabyte Aero £1700 does have a bigger SSD - but don't want to spend this much

Gigabyte Sabrepro £1300 only 8Gb ram and 128Gb SSD

MSI GE63VR £1550 near enough identical spec

I have bin a computer technician for about 15 years so i can only give you my personal preference and advice.
I have worked on so many laptops i cannot even give a number but what i can say is that the worst laptops for HARDWARE faults IN MY OPINION are Acer.
In the 15 years of my career i have only worked on 1 MSI and that was just a virus so in no way the manufacturers fault.
Although Gigabyte are brilliant and bulletproof i still prefer MSI for build quality as its only when you see inside a laptop and how its built that you appreciate the quality.
Sony Vaio are about the only laptop that are built to the same quality as MSI but i think Sonys are over engineered as some small parts are held down with 4 screws whereas 1 would easily do.
Thats my 2 peneth worth mate, Good luck
Outlet is your friend here. Spec is regularly available for a grand or so.

Sony stopped making Vaio laptops 4 years ago.
Have you had a look at the lenovo Ideapad Y910?? 17.3” 1080ips screen, i7, GTX1070 (8GB), 16GB ram, 256gb SSD, 1TB HDD.

On the lenovo website it’s £1300 but if you can get someone with a student beans account it comes down to £1170

Might have to do some more research on the 3xs or a pc specialist model.

That Lenovo is a good spec for the price, only want a 15" model though.

MSI Gaming laptop builds are awful (and Acers). Had a high spec £2k MSI 980m Skylake that was advertised as having “ future upgradable graphics” that they reneged on 6 mths after releases this model cos’ they didn’t do there research to find they couldn’t upgrade to 10 series. Was a main factor I (and others) bought that model. Forgave them and bought another £2k MSI Kabylake 1070 laptop that constantly overheated after less than 3 mins of gaming. Returned and got refund. Now got awesome ASUS ROG laptop that runs cool without issues.
How much would this cost with 32gb ram and 4k screen and hdmi output

Deal expired, now back at £1800.

Would have to order direct from Dell, and can then spec it as you like for extra ram and 4k etc.
