£64.99 seems about right price now for this ....but think the NVidia Shield TV will crap all over it !
Thanks, I have been watching this for a few days to see if it dropped below £70 as I want one to run KODI on.

Just ordered one, thanks again

If I remember well?, the original Amazon Fire TV of what came out last year around this time made it HELL for any Kodi fan boys/girls about, etc? .. from what recall from/through the numerous HUKD Postings that soon followed until just under 6 months ago at least is this, many tried & failed on account of Amazon deliberately deciding to give u no expansion slots whatsoever? (no SD, &/or Micro SD Slots), & 1 USB Socket for your 'whatevers'?.

I think a few enterprising lots eventually figured a way to install Kodi via the Amazon TV's 'Maintenance Mode' (or somethin?), as well as via its 'expansion' means, eg. its 1 USB Socket? (or something ... ) & then bam!.

Put simply, the original Box was not as straight forward at all?, its anyone's guess as to if/whats changed with this new one too, etc ..... :-)

Other than the obvious iOS integration, those Apple TV's were very over-rated for my liking? (or is that just me ..... )
Does anyone know if you can program this new 4k box with Kodi and other content ect???
I've ordered a £35 voice activated stick may take it back now. Cheers! :/)

Yes Kodi can be installed. You can use a Windows PC/tablet or a phone to transfer the files, etc.

Just have a look on Google, you do not even have to root them anymore, but there are a few different methods and some tips so that you can set KODI as the Home start screen as well.

KODI works really well on the Fire stick so should work even better with the more powerful box. (_;)
Good piece of kit, easy to install Kodi on both the original version and this one. Worth using the Blackbox install as it cuts down all the bloated stuff you probably will not need.
Thanks!!!
At this price it's an Android TV box killer for those looking primarily for a TV media player.

Never been a fan of Amazon products with their propensity for tying them down too much and as long as you can get Kodi on there then it could be a real winner if they were to keep this price as the standard.

Decent enough video and audio support and the addition of the MicroSD and USB ports should mean the right amount of versatility.

2Gb RAM, Quad core CPU and half decent GPU makes it a powerful enough beast.

According to the description it even comes loaded with a 32Gb card too.

So if you are currently looking at one of the Chinese boxes right now then I'd stop and take a look at one of these.

must...resist.....
Can this play back 1080p x265 files without dropping frames?
For those who primarily want to use 4k streaming - buy this. If you just want to use Kodi then the £25 stick is enough imo.

I disagree. If you have the money you get a much faster experience on the fire TV box.

Apple TV is useless in the UK. However, set it to USA & find an american friend with a full TV subscription package & you can get allsorts of packages from HBO to Showtime to NBC Sports (every Premier League game), etc.

Not really a killer. You can get 4k boxes cheap enough if you know where to look.
However, Amazon can sell these as a loss leader knowing the average person would need an amazon prime sub. To make use of it.
I am holding off for anything 4k atm until Sky release their prices for the Q box. Then I'll decide if I go streaming only & ditch Sky + the TV licence.

I agree with naruto, I've been quite surprised by how quick the stick is navigating its own and kodis menus and the videos start streaming very quickly even over WiFi.

But have you tried the fire TV box? It's not even close in performance.
Anyone know if you can access 4K content on a 1080p TV, obviously downscaled but in theory would look superior to the regular 1080 streams.

Overkill for Kodi and twice the price
although a great deal be warned the 1st Gen overall has better performance if you want to run Kodi. soon the 2nd Gen will be all you can buy so if you can snap up a 1st Gen I would. even through the 2nd Gen has slightly better hardware the overall performance is better on the 1st Gen

Say what ? Purchased my fire tv in January .Never rooted it and got kodi on pretty quickly via adb , then it was a case of just getting the correct add ons and then i found TVMC.
My technophobe auntie purchased the stick last week and i had kodi on it within 5 mins using ES file explorer.

If you have a NAS connected to two external HDDs like i do ,you dont need any USBs on AFTV. After messing with the stick the other day i find all aspects noticeably slower and the remote feels cheap which it is. AFTV and KODI go hand in hand and even an idiot can get it up an running within an hour.
Does the version of fire OS on this allow you to use custom DNS like the first gen did?
I sold the v1 to purchase this model the v2 on release day its an improvement on the v1 its more slicker using menus and using kodi ive never come across any issues
Does it play Netflix content in HD?
It plays it in HD, not sure about UltraHD.

It's a great box for the money, does Amazon and Netflix really well, don't really use it for much else

Thanks for the answer.

One more question - what about accessing content from LAN/NAS? Can it be easily done for the kids/wife to use it? Atm I've got WD TV Live and it started to hang/crash and it's getting on my nerves. I was thinking about getting some android player, but they can't play Netflix in HD.

You get what you pay for and the Shield walks all over this in performance.
Anyone thinking of purchasing or upgrading to the AFTV v2 primarily for 4K, may be disappointed to read this article:

Depends what you use it for...the Shield does far more than AFTV does.....and a shedload faster.

I just googled the shield tv after what you said and it bloody rules...I can't wait to buy one...500gb of course!
Did set up an AFTV v1 as a media player running kodi a few months back and overall pretty impressed. It's not perfect and did find kodi froze up a handful of times which is a bit of a pain having to navigate about various menus using the simple remote to quit the app then relaunch it. Also would be nice if it had an on/off option instead of having to leave it running or in sleep mode. For when on holiday etc.

Didn't find it particularly straight forward when trying to transfer a number of files across from PC to AFTV.

Great looking and powerful bit of kit overall though imo. Sure, it costs more than some of the cheap Chinese Android boxes but as with most things in life...you get what you pay for.
