Lewis Milestone's epic screen adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel stars Lew Ayres as one of a group of German teenagers who enlist for World War I after hearing a stirring speech from their professor. They soon discover that war is less about noble ideas and sacrifice than it is about pain, humiliation, suffering and death. Winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 1930.

Superb film. Already got but have some heat
Classic. Ordered, also picked up the steelbook of The Hustler up for £4.40. Great film.
A moving and thought-provoking oscar-winning film based on the fantastic book that was the first to describe the brutality and stress of war from the soldier's perspective. I've watched the film several times since I first read the book. The acting might seem a little melodramatic by today's standards but the anti-war message is clear. it's not a film for everyone but it probably should be.

I remember seeing this in school many years ago. It shaped my opinions. Old men happily sending boys to die for their own hubris. The final butterfly scene still gives me chills.
The director REALLY had some big balls to put this together when he did, such is the political propaganda machine of It you don't agree with me you must be a commie" type thing.
I own a DVD copy as well as the modern(ish) version & yes as has been stated it's cheese in places, but the message is now as it was then.
