Ikea have a basic battery charger for £5 (or £9 with delivery) that's similar but doesn't have the annoying limitation where batteries need to be charged in pairs: ikea.com/gb/…44/ (edited)

This! ^ Looks like it's a smart charger, so shouldn't slowly break your batteries, unlike the Amazon one.

EDIT: From the manual for this Ikea one-

    Charger features

    Charge 1 to 4 pieces of HR6/AA and/or 1 to 4 pieces of HR03/AAA rechargeable batteries.
    4 charging slots.
    Connected batteries are charged individually.
Charge is terminated by individual minus or zero delta voltage detection (-dV/dT or 0dV/dT).
Safety by separate safety timer and temperature sensors.
    Non-rechargeable and damaged batteries detection.
Charging status with 2 colors LED indicators for each slot.

So yes, the linked Ikea one is defintely a smart charger then! That really is a pretty good price for a smart charger and FAR better than this Amazon one. (edited)

PLEASE avoid chargers that only charge batteries in pairs. You can normally tell by either the instructions or they only have one indicator light for every two cells. This is because they are what's called "dumb" chargers that are not able to tell the state of your battery when attempting to charge them, so they just pump 4hrs or whatever of charge in to them whether the batteries need or want it or not... so they will likely either undercharge your batteries each time, or more likely will overcharge them and therefore knacker them in next to no time.

If possible, please only use "smart" chargers, that charge each battery on an individual basis, and normally have a charge gauge or LED light for each individual battery. These types of chargers can see what state your battery is in, and know when a battery is full and when to stop charging. They're a bit more, yes, but you save on not knackering your rechargeables!

The ikea charger linked elsewhere in this discussion by @MakoBytes appears to be an example of a cheap "smart" charger, that would seem to be a much better buy.

Bit annoying that you can only charge pairs at a time.

Yep. And it's also a warning that this is a dumb charger that will either under charge or over charge (and slowly break) your batteries.

I've got one of these and wouldn't buy again.

See all the reviews where people complain about batteries which are new or nearly new flashing red - which means the charger isn't charging them and says they're bad.
