Really nice discount applying to the Amazon Echo Dot Multimedia Speakers at Argos.

They are listed at £49.99 each, but when you buy two you save £25 making them just £74.98.

Good if you want to buy one as a gift - or team up with someone else and split the order.

If you can wait until Black Friday, assuming Amazon discount the Dot like they did on prime day AND allow you to use the following code for £25 discount on 3 units then it worked out less than £30 per dot when I bought 3x on prime day earlier this year.Obviously we don’t know the Black Friday deals yet for the Dot but as we are only a few weeks away it could be worth waiting.

Sounds a good idea, have you got permanent internet in the car with a 3G/4G dongle for it to work so well? Or are you linking it to a phone

I'd like to know how this works too. The amount of times I'm driving along and think of things I need to add to my shopping list!

If you have an iphone you can shout "hey siri" and add your shopping list to the Apple notes App
I'm pretty certain you can do something similar with Android phones too

'OK Google' with the phone in listening mode, obvs.

Shame they are now enforcing the one box Amazon music policy.

That's when I got mine... Almost certain it was 3 for £85, so just under £30 per dot...

The only downside I guess is the inability to use it to make hands-free calls from a mobile phone (outwith alexa to alexa calling obviously). Has anyone managed to get a workaround for hands-free calls?

I don't understand why you would do that compared to just using your phone? If you don't like google you can even use alexa with the amazon shopping app, just use tasker or soemthing similar to auto start the app when you connect to your cars bluetooth

Got a deal on here for a dongle with 20gb of 3g data with three for £10pm.
Linking to the iphone hotspot would mean I would have to open the settings each time i get into the car but the dongle avoids this issue

Yeh, I just use Google Assistant in the car. It synchs with Maps perfectly.

OK Google, let's go home.

Means i dont need to use the phone at all when driving or rely on 3rd party apps, and alexa understands my Scottish accent better, and it links straight to my prime music, and anyone in my car can use it, and does not drain my phone battery, and drop in on my other dots in my house without relying on others answering their phones

And it looks cool ! And connect to my hive devicies

The Google home/mini is way way better than this.

So in the car you are hot spotting ?

Good Point about the updates, not sure the size but 20gb a month should be ok - will be monitoring closely over the next week or so as i stream music from amazon prime. it is only 3g dongle but so far causes no issues and even others in the car can connect to it if i want them to

Wakkaday - Hotspoting to the dongle- once all set up i turn my ignition on and the dot connected via usb in my front armrest to the dongle that is in my boot with a 12v to usb adapter and once all thats j=kicked in the dot connects to my cars sound system via bluetooth.

Whole process takes about 45 seconds from turning the engine on to being able to interact with Alexa

My nephew tried this on my Android phone and had to change the settings back again to connect to my Wi-Fi indoors. Is there any way around this please apart from getting a dongle?

I don't think the discount on pack of 3 works on Amazon anymore, I can't see it anyway

No, I'm Samsung but my shopping list is now in my Alexa app (didn't like either of the third party shopping/list apps waaay to overly complex for my needs)
I'd say it's only a matter of time before amazon release some sort of car/mobile version

Is this only for 1st gen

I heard these are a bit rubbish and very limited in what they can do.

I have an Android headunit in my car that I connect to my Android phone as a hotspot.

I use a free app called "Hot Spot Starter" this automatically enables my phone's mobile hotspot when ever a chosen Bluetooth connection is made, so in my case as soon as I start my car my phone connects to my car stereo, hotspot turns on and stereo connects to hotspot.

So using that app with am echo dot you would set the app to turn on mobile hotspot when the phone connects to the Echo dot via Bluetooth.

You heard right. I have a Sonos Play 3 and used the discount code they sent me to buy an echo dot for £20. It can't do traffic, shop opening hours, and struggles to answer most questions. I can ask a question and she will say "sorry I don't understand" or "sorry I don't support that function yet" or give me completely irrelevant answer. I can then tweak the question (just changing the phrasing or a single word such as "a" to "the") and she'll answer it properly. The other day I asked it about somewhere to eat in Hessle and she gave me the weather. Often you just get a little "bingbong" which means she can't even be bothered to answer you... as for controlling smart home stuff - useless! The sonos integration half works - it will play a song but not stop it!!

I’m waiting for Echo Show, hope retailers like John Lewis stock them and match the £100 discount when 2 purchased. I don’t think these will be reduced on Black Friday. The really cool Alexa product is the spot, but will have to wait til new year for that..

I have the echo and u can use it effectively as follows:
Play Spotify premium
Play tune in
Turn lights on and off via tp link sockets
Set alarms and reminders
Check weather
The above it does well

I put one in the car, tethered to the phone's WiFi hotspot. It does work, but I didn't find much use for it.

Still the most pointless gadget on the market! Baaaa Baaaaa

Pointless in what sense? If it worked properly then it would be very useful to a lot of people, but I suspect not to you. In 10 years most households will have adopted smart technology. It opens up vast array of possibilities and simplification of mundane tasks. It’s not for everyone, some people prefer to stick with what they know. My dad resisted smart phones for 15 years and he’s just caved in and now thinks his “new” iPhone 4 is the best thing since sliced bread 🙄 stubborn old get!

I've got two of these things and they don't always listen correctly at the best of times. How is it ever going to work in a car with the radio on, mobile phone on and wife of kids chattering away in the background. Let's also not forget engine and road noise in the equation..
Also having one of these in the car is just another driver distraction that could possibly cause more accidents.

got 2 myself thx OP
