Use the code above to get £5 off when spending over £35

I decided to get the Amazon Fire 8 as well as the above and use code TDX-KYJF to get £10 off a £75 spend.

Then you aren't using it correctly. If you just use it to ask the time, news etc then you aren't using it to it's full potential. It is designed to be a hub for a smart home. Get some smart plugs, hook it up to your home sound system with Spotify and get some smart lights. Then you'll see what it can really do. There are countless uses for Alexa.

They have no use for it but to ask random garbage. They find it hilarious. I found it cringe. We were doing this with Siri years ago on our phones.

Kids today . . . . They are like soooo miserable innit.

If I PM you, would you be willing to share some advice on how you stay so cool and edgy?

You can set up a stock alert if you go to the black one and log in. I already have the black one. I don't mind the colour of this one as it will be hidden away in the kitchen.

Try using the app and downloading some skill sets for Alexa. There’s some quite cool numbers games you can play with your kids, there’s even a translate skill..
I’m sure it’ll keep you entertained for more than five minutes 🏼

Alexa is not listening in on you. It is only listening for a wake word then it starts listening to you. You can put your tinfoil hat away.

Don’t you have a mobile phone with a microphone built in? Isn’t that always listening in? Not just at home but everywhere you go probably with a camera as well. Amazon aren’t going to sell your conversations with your dog to Russia you know.
It's already gone up to £49

I use mine as a way of accessing Spotify and digital radio without having to use my phone and drain the battery. The other features come in handy. Not sure what is so “cringe” about that. Each to their own I guess.
I bought my first Echo Dot as an impulse purchase - I already have a large amount of home automation kit, controlled via Domoticz, and thought it would be good to try out. The difference with the Echo Dot is that my wife and four year old daughter are both bought into it - with no encouragement from me. On a daily basis they use the device, both for listening to music and also controlling the plethora of smart devices around the house.

You can add virtually any device which is internet connected by using ha-bridge (https://github.com/bwssytems/ha-bridge) - this interfaces with Domoticz (https://www.domoticz.com) and surfaces ALL of the switches in Domoticz to ha-bridge which in turn can be added to the Echo Dot - there doesn't need to be a Skill for it to do this, ha-bridge can emulate a Philips Hue bridge or WeeMo bridge.

Using this method, I can turn the TV on and off (mostly off when the wife/kids have left it on in an empty room), control the lighting, set the temperature, tell Alexa to play something on Sonos in the kitchen/bedroom/wherever. The TV is controlled via it's onboard web service (which the Sony remote app uses) and allows full control of the TV over IP - for Alexa purposes, on and off works great.

I also have homebridge (https://github.com/nfarina/homebridge) running which does the same as ha-bridge but for Apple's Siri - so for any device which is in Domoticz, I can control it by voice using Alexa or Siri, via an app on my phone, via the Domoticz web interface or by automation (e.g. timers, movement etc.).

It's immensely flexible if you put the effort in. Out of the box it is powerful, with some imagination it is limitless.

Yes, I am a geek, and yes, much of this is beyond the scope of the average user, but it shows what can be achieved by stringing together some free software with the Echo devices opens up a whole world of automation opportunities.
Now £49
Expired now.
This is now £49.00 on the website. But the £5 off still works
Wow! What's wrong with you guys who moan about this device! Its awesome since I got this I've been in regular contact with beings from another world!
