Isn't it better to spend another £10 and get a proper screen on the echo show 5?

Or even better for £20 more echo show 8 has a much more powerful speaker.

I think this should be around £25 :/

Depends what you want by your bedside - for me I don’t want the screen, so this is perfect.
oliverreed08/04/2020 22:40

Can anyone advise, is the clock bright?

If you ask Alexa what 12x12 is she instantly knows it’s 144, so must be bright! :-)

@htslough i think some people just don't have space for show version (like on a night stand), and there this one with a clock may be just what they need. Plus £39 is quite a good price for best-sounding mini smart speaker with a clock/times/temperature display Just to be clear, I do agree that show 8 is better and this one should be for around £25-£30, as regular echo gets down to £20-£25 now 😁
I'd love this one to be around £25 on black Friday this year
Bought my wife one for Christmas as an alarm clock and she loves it, as Bluefusion mentions it’s a better fit for the bedside table
I own one of these and for your bedroom these are perfect, especially for just playing some music and the clock feature is much better

I think it’s pretty good for it’s size, had The Rolling Stones, beastie boys and Metallica playing through it all ok

Fingers crossed for that price
Ordered, thanks OP. Love my echo dot in the lounge and now I've got one for the bedside table too!
Very silly questions.
If u only have this Echo dot. No other accessories. Apart from clock and bluetooth. What else it can be used for?
I’d rather have this than my echo show 5, maybe the 8 is okay but the screen on the 5 is complete cr&p, at night the background is too bright and the numbers too light so it’s useless as a clock. The screen is so small and low res it’s almost pointless and does just the same thing as a spot in my house.

I agree these are overpriced for what they are (Dot 3 sound with added features - £30 tops).

However - I've got two standard dot 3 in our bedroom (£21 at Curry's the other day) and paired to our fire stick 4k as a home cinema system (tongue in cheek obvs).

As a 2.0 setup it's incredibly good. I am so impressed with it, that I am seriously considering a pair of Echo 3 with the sub in the lounge as a 2.1 setup.

Surely only a matter of time before Amazon launches 5.1 sound, eh? The dot 3 would be reasonable but basic satellites at the rear!

Only crap thing with all the echo products is no battery backup. I start work at 5am (when not locked down) so if my alarm turns off I won't wake up. Poor design flaw for these small screen and dot designs that you would use for this very perpurse.

That's literally just one need for a battery fallback though. Expensive addition for something most mitigate with a mobile phone.

We had a Bose soundlink in our kitchen, it’s not been on since we got our dot, sound is good no need for it.

No, it's not bright. Display dims as soon as you turn off the lights. Good bit of kit imo
The RRP on this is a joke, I wonder if anyone ever got one at that price. For that amount you can get a Google/Alexa/Lenovo smart display or one of the better speakers.
If you're really keen on the small factor and clock, you can get for this price the Lenovo smart display clock, better deal IMO.
Not saying this is a bad deal, I just think this is expensive when you have so many other choices.

The echo show 8 does not act like alarm clock, when I bought it you couldn't just display a clock face. It might have been updated now not sure. I use the 5" as an alarm clock , works flawlessly.

you can whisper to Alexa...but it is creepy
I like the idea of this Echo Dot but can't justify spending £15 for what's basically a segment LED clock over the standard one. As others have said, it's not a lot more for the Show 5 or 8 - both much better sound, cameras (for video chatting) and full displays for security cameras, weather, news, etc. I honestly thought it'd have fallen in price by now, £5 extra over the normal 3rd gen Dot seems like a fair price to me.
Genuinely thought this was RRP, given the other one without the clock is £29.99
