Well, that’s one way of looking at it.
As one of the people who bought the refurb, I view it as having the same device, with the same warranty, but with an extra £7 in my pocket. Each to their own.

I have an cho show 8. I ask it to open YouTube and it does. (I chose the Silk browser as default). It opens my home page. I can then ask it to find whatever I want on you tube and it works fine.
I’m sure a google device could have a better integration and UI, but for me this is fine.
The speaker on the 8 is supposed to be much better than the 5. The 8 has reasonable bass, but it’s a little artificial. However, better than many speakers for the £60 I paid.
If you want proper musical sound for a big room you will need to look elsewhere. Mine is in the kitchen and perfect.
Cooked some amazing Buritos following a YouTube recipe yesterday evening. Yum

If you want YouTube go with Google or Lenovo smart display. I do not know about this one, but in general a smart speaker sounds better than a smart display. Unless you're referring to Echo Dot2, in that case everything sounds better than Echo Dot2.
You can do lots of things with these. You can control your smart tech, you can view a video doorbell or a camera, you can use it as a photo frame (at least with the Google one you can), you can use a smart display for video calls (didn't look into these but you can with other smart displays such as Facebook Portal, Google, Lenovo, etc). It is basically a smart speaker with a display, so you can use it in the same way as a smart speaker and a bit more.

I'm pretty sure the refurb Echo 5 were new, customer returns. At least this is how it was with my Echo 2, but I've paid half the RRP.
Whats the best option for viewing a eufy smart doorbell?

Is it this or Google nest hub?

Are you suggesting if you add YouTube as your home page, it will open straight with YouTube page using voice command? Do you have to say 'open Silk' or 'open home page'? Thanks!

You can use YouTube by saying Alexa open Youtube. However, it will open via the Firefox browser. It works but not as great as having the real app.
I'm going my house and boxes up my echo show 8 and I miss it sooo much! No music, no timer, no video on ring door bell, No pictures, no youtube. I've always thought it was luxury but it's improved our lives a lot. Buy it you'll have no regrets, I was skeptical at first too.

No sorry. When I ask Alexa to open you tube, it opens silk browser and goes to the YouTube page, but it has my login details for YouTube so goes straight to my YouTube page.

It depends whether you have Silk or Firefox as your default browser. I read that silk browser was better for YouTube, so that’s what is set. It works quite well. I’ve not tried it with Firefox to compare tho.

Not really it was £7 quid cheaper
We have a few of the show 8s and the sound quality compares well to an echo. We use them as alarm clocks as well as video calling devices.
Anyone with the Show 5 just find them a bit rubbish? My Dot in another room usually picks up the wake word before my Show 5, also I find the music quality is far better on the Dots.
A show 8's audio is much better than the dots, both in volume and bass
Apart from a bigger screen on the 8, any other way its better than the 5?

I don't have a smart doorbell, but I do have eufy 2c smart cameras and was looking at the same thing. They integrate with both from what I've seen online and if you are a 'normal' user there really isn't a difference.

Eufy integrates with Alexa, Google and also apples home kit system as well... But I believe if you are going to do more complex automation alexa is the more suitable as per the following thread.

communitysecurity.eufylife.com/t/h…072

Google vs amazon comes down to personal choice, I had 2 Google minis and 2 echo dots and sold the minis as they were just stupidly loud. There was no middle ground for me, I couldn't hear them or they deafened me. That why I've ended up with alexa, other people have other opinions.

One I received had slightly tattered box, the actual unit looks untouched, no marks or anything, so I wouldn't say a smack in the face as I saved £7 on what appears to be a new unit with a slightly tattered box

Exactly. I bought a refurb Echo 5 and it was in exactly the same condition as the one we had previously bought that was new. The £8 went towards the Amazon smart plug they offered me for £9.99 instead of £24.99.

Where's the deal????? This is just an advert it's the same price!!!!!

...and also this weeks lottery numbers please.
I had just got a 5 as a gift took it back today refunded got an 8 for a few pounds more
How much are these generally at Amazon on a deal. Is this the best price then been or were they cheaper at launch?
By the way, if anyone is hoping to create a stereo pair of these, it won't work (not supported). You can do that with the Show 5's but not the Show 8's. Still, the speakers are bigger and better on the 8 so consider that before buying a pair of 5's.
Have an Echo dot with clock on bedside table. Good for progammable alarms but hubby needs to keep sitting up to look over to see it.
Would this be better? Good that it sits higher up but does the glow disturb your sleep all night like our old electric alarm clock did? Echo dot dulls nicely at night.
What are folks’ favourite / most used features on a Show that a Dot doesn’t have?

I'm not sure why everyone is so conflicted about whether to buy now or wait. I bought a refub Echo Show 5 when they were posted a few days ago, and I'll be buying an Echo Show 8 now from AO (which is what I really wanted anyway) and then I'll wait to see what the Prime day deal is. Whichever ones I don;t want will get returned. Amazon is 30 days, pretty much no questions asked, and AO is 100 days free returns. Unless it's a real stretch for you (in which case, why are you buying one to begin with), it's kind of a no brainer isn't it?
