If you don't like Amazon FireOS that comes with this device, it is possible to root it and install either Android (AOSP) or CyanogenMod instead.

Level of technical skill required: Moderate.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you brick your device.

1. DO NOT connect to WiFi after receiving your device as this may auto-upgrade to the latest version of FireOS which is currently not rootable.
2. Check that FireOS is currently on version 5.1.4 or lower. Any version higher than 5.1.4 may not be rootable, and attempting to downgrade may brick it.
3. Downgrade to FireOS 5.1.2 by following the instructions here. Skip this step if FireOS version is already at 5.1.2 or lower.
4. Root the device using the SuperTool available here, carefully choosing the options corresponding to the exact version of FireOS you have.
5. Flash either Android (AOSP) or CyanogenMod 12.1 or one of these alternatives.

Further information in the step-by-step videos here, or an overview here.

yes great, anything goes wrong during warranty, then knackered.
Stupid question - do these operate in same way as normal tablets but just a different OS. Will I be able to download Sky Go and BBC I player?

Amazon offer a one-time "no questions asked" replacement if the device is still under warranty.

Images on Amazon website seem to show BBC Iplayer app on the screen so I'm hoping so!

Apps for FireOS are downloaded via the Amazon Appstore, but it has a more limited selection than other app stores such as Google Play or the Apple App Store.
However, some of the more popular apps such as the ones you mentioned are available:

Sky Go
amazon.co.uk/Sky…2AI

BBC iPlayer
amazon.co.uk/Med…7PW

Its £40 its not like your messing around with a £200 tablet.

Obviously when doing this sort of stuff you understand the consequences
I haven't bought one before because I didn't want the bright light causing me problems sleeping, so I kept with my old e-ink one.

Saw in the item description on Amazon they now have a blue light software filter which should eliminate this problem.

thanks to the op's for all the posts today, mine is ordered

Yep, its built in but plenty available on app store anyway which would allow you to further customise contrast/colour etc. No longer an issue no matter what device you use, new or old.
Good price. but unless you're perfectly content with a tablet that will have at least a few dead pixels on it I wouldn't bother.

Bought one from one Argos last month. it had six dead pixels on it. I took it back to another Argos for a replacement. It had 3 or 4 of them.

Maybe most people are okay with that, but I'm not.

You should spend more on a better tablet then.
I'm ok with it, paid £35 last year and noticed a few dead pixels but still worth it. Probably wait just under 12 months is up and send it back for a replacement if I can be bothered, but no doubt get one back with dead pixels anyway! Got it for the kids, bought a cheap sd card and doing an adequate job.
Absolutely superb wee tablet. I bought one around Christmas when they were on offer. Well worth the current £40.00.

Internal storage obviously a bit limited at 8GB but not an issue as can be expanded via MicroSd - I've got a 64GB card fitted so plenty room.

Yes the Amazon App Store is perhaps not as comprehensive as some others but still plenty of content available.
In response to earlier question I've just checked on mine and can confirm iplayer is available through the Amazon App Store.

Worth noting that Google Play can be easily installed on this (no rooting involved) - I've just tried loading iplayer through the Google Play store and working fine.

FYI - I also have my Chrome, BT Sport App , Google maps , YouTube & Kodi amongst other things all working on it .

... and of course HUKD App

Great, so you are able to get any app from the Google playstore?

Yes I think all the ones' I've tried put on it so far have worked - there may well be some exceptions I'm not aware of but generally I treat this as more or less an android tablet. Did same thing with an Amazon Fire phone I had. Still keep it as a media player (and a backup for my everyday use Xperia Z5).

You can add a standard android launcher too - I put Smart Launcher on and it works fine. The Fire Phone was able to give you the option of having an Android launcher as the default and/or use a Home switcher to go back to the standard Fire OS however the tablet doesn't seem to let you keep it as default - but it's just one click on the shortcut and you feel you are on normal Android
8GB rubbish

Buy a 64gb card . . .

I've just checked and "Perfect Viewer" downloaded and installed free from Google Play.
Fine reading a .cbz file I had handy so I'd imagine will be exactly the same for .cbr.
PV is also in Amazon Apps for £1.99

Cold from me as this was £39.95 just before Xmas in Argos
Will this recognize a ps4 controller either using otg or Bluetooth without rooting? I just want a cheap tablet to run the remote play app that's been modded to work on any android tablet. Hoping it will work on fire Os. Great find op, regardless if I buy this or not.

Do you have a link for the android remote play app? You can install playstore on this and download android apps side by side with amazon.
Not sure where to download remote play, toi many links and dodgy sites. I'll try it out on this tablet to see if it works

7 inches isn't enough.
What generation of Fire is this? Looking at cases but can't see the info in the Amazon listing.

Can anyone recommend any good, cheap, bumper type cases for kids?
How are these for reading on??
