I got the 10" version in the last sale and didn't like all the Amazon bloat or the Fire OS. Spent a couple of hours on the XDA site, rooted the tablet and disabled/removed all the rubbish. It is now basically running stock Android with Nova as the launcher. The speed difference since doing that is massive.

For anyone who doesn't feel techy enough, there are lots of step by step instructions online about how to do all this and it does take a while, but is easy and well worth the effort.

10 inch cant be rooted but you can stiil add the play store.
if you dont like the look of the amazon launcher, sideload launcher hijack 3 and nova launcher
set nova launcher as the default within launcher hijack and voila nova will take over.

decided not to go for this as this cannot be rooted now
guys moaning about it so its obviously not the tablet for them.
for £35 it does what its meant to.
download amazon prime vids to it and watch on the train.
These ones don't appear to be as tough as the 2015 version. The screens break very easily in my opinion
I bought 2x 8HD Amazon Fire, I had the Google Play Store in within 10 minutes of setting up out the box.

Is there enough memory to download vids onto it with all the bloat?
Got one for 30 on black Friday. To remove the ads just go on Amazon live chat help and ask them to remove special offers. Plenty of videos showing how to install play store and android skin

How can they make these so cheap, yet a kindle paperwhite costs over 100 quid?

Don't you have to pay a tenner to remove ads or choose model without ads before purchase? Basically the special offer is to have the ads but is ten pounds less?

Actually, the 10" can be rooted. I've done it No need to use hijacker if you don't want to.

Ok, the links posted here are for the 10" HD Fire tablet. The principle is the same as for the 7", but these should be a starting point to give you an idea of what you can do. You'll need to dig in the XDA threads to find similar instructions for the 7" version.

Top level page for all Fire tablets:
forum.xda-developers.com/ama…ire

Specific to Fire 10 HD!!!
How to root with f/w 5.6.0.0
forum.xda-developers.com/hd8…443

What to remove/disable after rooting!
forum.xda-developers.com/hd8…569

Lockscreen ads return after using methods mentioned in threads above. This one is permanent:
forum.xda-developers.com/hd8…236

Just a friendly warning though...you CAN brick your tablet doing any of this. Please be careful and don't shout at me if you break something

If you follow the instructions on XDA (some examples posted above), you can replace the lockscreen app with a generic one which doesn't have adverts. You need to root the tablet first to gain access to the underlying OS in order to be able to remove and replace system apps. I have done this on the 10" HD version and no longer see any Amazon adverts.
have the 2015 ver which was same price 2 years ago. afaik these are very similar!
really poor screens..
edit: apparently there are several small upgrades, screen contrast is now a bit better, bit faster, bit lighter etc.. nothing huge.

ok for watching movies and that's probably about it? or kids maybe with a bumper case.
bear in mind 1024x600 is lower resolution than most phones now! and not only low res, also bad.

like the tablet for what it is, something to watch movies, play music (to your BT speakers!) and throw around and maybe at a pinch browse web. just not as a main device.

also they moved some buttons so 2015 cases won't necessarily fit.

the competition for this isn't ipads lol. it's those £50 lenovos or whatever i saw on here recently.

Somebody on another thread suggested using live chat to tell Amazon you don’t like the gambling ads on your child’s Fire tablet. They will then remove for free apparently.

I was talking about the non rooting avenue and what I said was in response to a member that suggested it was free to have the ads removed. I can't see a lot of people buying one of these to root but handy advice to those that may. Don't forget kids routing voids warranty.

WTF try it or don't no skin off my nose
When Amazon we're selling refurbs I bought an 8gb and 16 GB 7"and they arrived brand new, there was a thread. on here at the time. I was very pleased with them.

The 8 GB was a present to an elderly relative to get them into computing. It did not take me long to fill up the 16 GB and even though they have an sd hc memory expansion slot, not all apps will transfer to a card.

Really 8gb should not be sold nowadays, phone or tablet, it is too small. Start with 16gb mminimum!
