Good deal
Just ordered this. Great deal.
Other than 4k and voice - what are the pro's/con's of this over the fire sticks?

Tempted to buy this. Can anyone confirm if the issue of DD and DTS audio has been fixed? Only looking to purchase if I can use KODI with surround sound via an amp.
Amazon fire tv is overrated here, just got rid of mine,so much reboot,a real pain to load non amazon apps, and the absolute worst version of youtube that constantly caused reboots..so annoying.

I'd happily pay extra and buy a decent set like Shield.

Quite happy with the fire stick. Mostly use for Netflix but tried a few games recently. Also use it for AirPlay.

I don't have a 4K tv otherwise may have got it.

Anyway maybe your device was faulty or are other people having same issue with this.

Shield is a totally different product that costs double the price at minimum.

Fire TV is a totally fine product that is more in line with the prices of the Chinese Android boxes and it smashes those things to pieces in terms of build quality, usability, reliability and, most of the time, performance.

I have the fire stick as well and am very happy with in generally - although I do agree with Tequila on the youtube app - it seems very poor.
Love my fire TV box v1 which I've had for nearly a year. Baring an odd few glitches which are to be expected on any android system. I really can't fault it.
adding Kodi and android apk's can be a pain but download AGK fire app on your android phone/tablet to make life much easier in transferring over install files.
downloading the Firestarter Launcher (Google/youtube it) will make a new home screen to launch all your android apps with ease
I would assume you need a 4k TV to benefit from all the features. Most 4k tv's will have SMART functionality built in so what's the point to this?

Except it runs this horrible, closed, modified version of android..its better build than those unreliable chinese boxes but really not that great unless you are an amazon prime user and can live with awkwatd sideloading and limitations of it.

The fact that you have to go through three rows of settings just to run kodi or other side loaded apps was so annoying.
It also reboots alot more than it should..the all importang youtube app is broken with no better alternative.
Im happy I got rid of mine fir a healty 80 quid just because I had kodi on it..
Now I just need to wait for a deal for Shield (was 107 few days back) or even a mini PC like Acer Revo, either will destroy Fire TV.
Im not saying its bad, just not as good as people hype it here.
For those of experience of both.

I've got an unopened firestick lying at home.

Should I upgrade to this - or would it be a waste of money?

P.S I suspect the portability of the fire stick is a big plus?

(No 4K needed, no gaming needed.)

The sideloading is no problem for me but everyone is different and how often are you needing to install new apps on a box like this that aren't available on Amazon's appstore.

Firestarter keeps both itself and Kodi updated anyway.

If the portability is important to you then stick with the firestick although this will be a lot faster. The firestick is generally fine though.

What about running them..going through 3 rows of settings just to run kodi is just awkward

Firestarter gives you the option to boot up with an application of your choice..........so tell it to boot up into kodi from the off and away you go.
I've got a chinese box (MXIII) and a Fire Stick and I'd say if anything, the chinese box is more reliable. I've never had a moment's problem with it.

You don't need to, that's what Firestarter does. Kodi starts on mine when I double tap the Home button on the remote. And incidentally, unlike with Chinese boxes, the remote isn't total crap. In fact it's probably one of the best designed remotes that I have seen in years.

I used a Chinese box last year for all of three weeks before distastefully shoving it in the back of a cupboard. I sold it earlier this year when I bought the Fire TV and we use the Fire TV almost every single day.

Can the 'normal' YouTube app be installed using agk or sideloading using es file explorer? There seems to be an issue for some members with YouTube version on fire stick
I haven't tried YouTube on firestick

I use the MXIII every day. It works fine and is super fast. I don't use the remote that comes with it but then I'd rather not with the fire stick either but have no other choice. I want one with a keyboard so I use the Rii i25 remote.

I've not used the Fire TV and I'm sure it's very good but on my Fire Stick, Kodi doesn't auto update from the play store so I have to sideload it each time there's an update.

Firestarter auto updates Kodi on the FireTV. If you just sideload Kodi but don't install Firestarter then it won't auto update.

Any Android app you like can be sideloaded onto it but keep in mind that most apps on Google Play are designed for touch screens.

That is why the user experience on the Chinese boxes is usually so poor. They rely on the versions of apps which were actually built for tablets.

Just had my fire stick delivered today and installed firestarter, kodi and wookie for the addons...impressed so far. My first box so really nothing to compare it to

Cool, you might find the firestick struggles with Wookie though. Wookie is ideally built for Quad Core units with 2GB RAM as far as I understand and it is also a bit of a space hog. The Firestick doesn't allow installation to extUSB like the Fire TV boxes do.

I have Firestarter set so a double press of home launches the installed apps screen, single press of home returns to normal Amazon screen. Very useful.
other than via Amazon Prime, is there any other way to play 4K video on this device?
Firestick is fine provided you don't overload it

People often blame the stick for buffering, but more often than not its down to slow internet, poor wifi connection or the stream itself

I just run my top 6 favorate addons on the basic Conflence skin

Watched The Return of the Jedi last night in 1080p (Phoenix) perfect picture throughout the movie

Which addons and streams of you use? I struggle to find a good stream for films, normally give up.
I have a firestick and I think it's ridiculous you don't get All4 (previously 4od) and itv player.
