What is flt?
Asfaik - you will need one....since if you have a TV full stop in your house you need it....if you are connecting this up to a monitor that is not a tv then I suppose you may be ok

you only need a tv licence to watch tv as its broadcast ie live tv ,you dont need one to watch ,on demand tv as its not live

I'd guess fork-lift truck

Yes fork lift licence

Can xbmc be installed on this?

great for XBMC this is.

Many years ago a TV Licensing guy knocked on the front door of a house I was renting. He asked me to switch the TV in the lounge on. There was no ariel connected, just a VCR. But the fact the TV had a tuner, enabling it to pick up live channels, i.e. it wasn't a monitor, meant that a TV licence was required! So I guess unless anythings changed since, merely owning a TV means you must purchase a license unless you want to get caught and have a hefty fine to pay!

No TV licence required. Educate yourself people!

Or even better, only £59 if purchased using MasterCard..

Check if you need a TV Licence

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.

It costs £145.50 for colour and £49.00 for a black and white TV Licence.

Hot, cracking piece of kit. Picked one up about three weeks ago and there's some great stuff out there. XBMC can be installed easily...

SPMC is a version of xbmc available in the Amazon app store.

Does SPMC look and work the same way as xbmc?

I think as long as you own a TV set you need to have a TV license.

I wonder if at some point they'll give these a way for free with a Prime subscription.

xbmc this, xbmc that..

I suppose they will. £64 is a rip off for a box that has apps on it and has a few crappy games and catchup. I'd rather invest in a smart tv to get this, or buy a much cheaper alternative like now tv

yup. just tweaked for android, had a few issues with it, skins and addons not installing, I still prefer kodi, new version out now, and I both still on the machine..

I got mine for £49 when they were first put to amazon uk. It's cost me £30~ return to send it to america to get it rooted though. I just want to play media via USB plus use the PS4 controller properly. For me, that was worth it.

From the looks of it, the Fire TV is capable of loads of emulators. N64/PSX/PSP/SNES etc etc

Not to mention, the rooted fire tvs easily go for £100+ on ebay

XBMC (now Kodi) download if it helps anyone: http://www.tvaddons.ag/

thats not kodi, that plasters tv addons all over your box, if that's want you want.. However, there are more subtle ways of installing.....

Now TV doesn't have the extensive list of apps that this has, and a Smart TV costs a damn sight more and will still lack the number of apps that this has.

£64 for a device a quad core cpu, 2gb ram and an Adreno 320 is pretty cheap when all things are considered, Amazon are unlikely to make any money at all off the initial purchase price.

You only need a TV licence if you receive live TV feeds.

No

You only need a TV Licence if you watch Live TV. Please ring TV Licensing if you are unsure what that means.

You don't need to root for kodi, there is no USB support, so network storage,(NAS) required..a wired 360 controller, works.. I haven't tried any 3D, so don't know if that's supported, otherwise its fab, and half the price and more of a NUC...

It is a great item, I might get a 2nd for the other room. Shame the voice search is only on Amazon Prime.

Bought one of these recently, main use will probably be running XBMC. Other than having no USB support, what other stuff won't I be able to do unless my box is rooted? Hoping to root a Hudl 2 in order to run apps etc.

Thanks.

Also same price in pc world / currys

I've heard you need root to use the USB as media - You can also use the USB drive as your primary "hard-drive" as it were if more space is needed. I'll look into it for media anyway. Just wanted that bit extra of a fiddle!

usb as playback

I tried network mounting, but the homehub is terrible and would require more hardware. This way, it's cost me £30ish and it's guaranteed to work.

I'd be intersted if you can put a USB hub in the back for an extra port

Correct you need root to access media by USB. But if you just want xbmc and access media via a network (wired of wireless) no root Is needed

It does not support USB drives OTB, Yet, so you need it to connect to a network drive, by installing KODI, It may be "unlocked" in the future, or for fire tv 2, Mines not rooted and its fine using a NAS..

Oh yeah, you miss nothing realistically. I just like the idea of having it all plugged in using the USB. For example, some controlling apps I'd need root for. I can't use NBC sports app without root as I can't login - you need a cursor. You also can't use mirroring as the fire tv would need a VPN running. With android, you can't VPN on the phone & mirror at the same time.

So for the cost of £30, I don't need a NAS drive, I don't need any extra equipment either. If you have it already, root is pretty much next to not necessary

You can also get the google play store on there with root, forgot about that!

BTW, the Linx Tablet runs windows KODI, very well, and can be paired with a fire tv remote, Fab all round!! and may be a better bet for those that need or use usb drives...
