I noticed Argos had dropped these to £69 with a £5 voucher this morning, I did nearly post, but Amazon now seem to have price matched including the voucher price.

It was £79 on Amazon as of 9am this morning.

BTW ends March 2nd.

Has anyone ordered one recently from Amazon and know what software version was on it (i.e. can they still be rooted)?

Runs kodi without being rooted. What else do you need

can u get xbmc on this?

Xbmc is now called Kodi. Very easy to install via adbfire.

A Rooted Amazon TV will allow you to use the USB Port to watched files via a USB Source (USB Stick / External HDD).

However any OTA (these Amazon IP's can be blocked) will blow the e-Fuse making the device an effective BRICK if any tampering has been detected or any older Firmware to be installed.

This or a Google Nexus Player? I'll be using it for Netflix and Kodi.

These things are great. Very impressed with the amount there is to watch (versus Netflix, which I've subsequently cancelled). Always on, excellent voice recognition, decent interface, easier to find what you want. Also installed Plex to watch home videos. Excellent device, compared to the other ones I've used (KISS Media Player, Cyclones [2nd and 3rd Gen], WDTV, Google Chrome. Maybe I've just been unlucky, or alone on this, but these are great little devices.

EDIT: Sorry Buzz, heat my man, great deal!

I had one of these in order to run Kodi and I honestly couldn't recommend it. in particular the support for surround sound formats was not good, although that is Android's fault rather than the Amazon box. Kodi was not terribly stable either.

For similar money I think a Raspberry Pi 2 running OpenELEC is a better bet.

A replacement loader to remove all the Amazon prime junk (my preference) and display sideloaded apps, a VPN, the ability to remap a Playstation DS4 buttons to use the controller, use a bluetooth remote (iPazzport KP-810-10BTT).....

What vouchers for argos

Mine came un-rootable but not bothered as it has ran SPMC (spin off from Kodi) perfectly well and meets my needs. Remote is more than adequate and being BT doesn't need line of sight and thus the unit is on the floor behind the TV unit.
Wakes up my media server in the loft for all the TV shows and films etc to watch via SPMC and then goes into its own sleep type mode after thirty minutes of no use.

Great unit for me and plays all 1080p and SBS stuff fine and optical out delivers DD and DTS 5.1 to my Logitech Z5500 speakers.

use this instead, no side loading, and syncs with launcher on home screen, works better than kodi

or side load latest apk from here ..

....What else do you need

The ability to plug in an external USB drive.

....but that's not the devices fault, as it's just meant to be a streamer.

Plus all the usability/preference stuff that Andy mentions.

Three minds between this, pi2 and just going whole hog and building a little nuc

As a side note, does anyone watch tv series on Amazon Prime? Was loving 'The Americans' first series, go to watch series 2 and you have to pay per episode for it. Pah... ok, I still pay for it, but prefer NowTV these days. At least they don't rope you in and then ask for more once they have you hooked, which, I think is just cunning. Can just imagine the marketing goons who came up with that concept. -_-

Can I put stuff I've purchased from the play store onto this, or am I tied in to amazons? I suspect I know the answer but thought I'd ask!

EDIT: Also aren't most android games designed for touch screen? So why the game controller? Also is there a volume button on the remote, thats the one thing I hate my roku for!

Free to download mate, does pretty much nothing once you install it....

PLEASE NOTE: This app contains in-app purchasing, which allows you to buy items within the app using actual money. On Fire devices, you can configure parental controls from the device Settings menu by selecting Parental Controls. On Android devices, you can configure in-app purchasing parental controls from the settings menu within the Amazon Appstore.

That's not even close to being true

Great device. Sideload Kodi and away you go, it is really easy. There are plenty of instructional videos on YouTube.

Hmm, their loss I guess as I have a substantial play catalogue I'd not want to lose. Will stick with my roku for now

That’s one way to get it cheaper.

What I don't get about SPMC is the difference between the APK and the "launcher APK" , any one know?

Pretty much it seems. But don't you want to have the opportunity to have Amazon screw you for even more money...? What are you, some kind of philistine?

Would you be kind enough to post a link or two to some good tutorial videos on how best to set up an Amazon Fire TV as a media player with Kodi installed?

Thanks.

I am tempted. My mate has one and said Kodi was easy to install, the remote is snappy and the whole thing is quick

when you sideload spmc you need to make sure the version is the same as the one you 'buy' in the appstore.... at least thats what i had to do. Sideload then refresh amazon purchases from one of the menu options

great bit of kit, replaced my apple tv's, have two and ordered a third.
