I've had both (albeit previous models) and ended up selling the Apple TV and keeping this.

Kodi?

Absolutely.
Prime 4k yet?
Why is this so cold? Just the typical herd mentality of cold voters or is there a better deal out there?
I hope the price stays as it is until the clubcard boost.

is there any point in buying this if my 4k telly runs the Amazon app and netflix already?
yes for Kodi.
I upgraded from the fire stick to this way faster and more responsive

Found the stick wound lock up often when using kodi

Is there any reason to get this, My 4k TV like most 4k Tv's has an Amazon app and Netflix app, and plays 4k videos from both perfectly, why would I purchase a 4k box to do what my TV already does? Thanks

Kodi
Raspberry Pi 2 manages that for 25 squids, and the pine 64 should be out soon for 15 quid. Even the recent pi Zero free on the pi magazine offers kodi. The prices above, make the assumption you have a spare phone charger and 8 gig memory card around the house.

Well pi 2 uses more juice than a normal phone charger supplies, you are assuming that it is linked to a TV with a remote that will work through the HDMI, you forgot to mention some way of reaching the router, and a fire tv runs kodi faster than pi. Lets assume a buyer would not be irritated by the lack of a case...

On the downside fire TV only reads external drives formatted to FAT, only has the one usb (although I wouldn't trust using all 4 on a pi with kodi due to power issues), and loses some kodi functionality with the TV remote (if it works) compared to pi. Amazon might also release an update that kills kodi at some point.

I could see why some people could see a benefit with fire tv. I know my wife does.
