Amazon Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD - £54.99 @ Amazon (Prime Day)

Better than the Fire Stick, though a little more expensive. (Amazon Prime Users only - Normally £79.99).

Main benefits over Fire Stick:
* Voice Remote as standard
* H.265 support (Stick only supports H.264)
* USB port for USB mass storage (to watch movies/play music) or to plug USB keyboard/mouse/wireless dongle to control Kodi and other apps etc.
* More RAM (2GB) to play full 1080p videos smoothly (or even 4K as per the name!)
* SD Card slot for extra storage (though admittedly only really useful if you pop your own files e.g. movies/music on it)
* Wireless tends to be more resilient (less random signal drops, but that may just be my personal experience)

I'll leave the rest to the Amazon description, but its a very good piece of kit that I actively use everyday (and yes it does Kodi....very very well :-P)

Description:

- Amazon Fire TV, now 4K Ultra HD compatible. Enjoy movies and TV episodes in stunning 4K Ultra HD with your compatible 4K UHD TV. See compatibility details below.
- No 4K UHD TV? No problem. Amazon Fire TV lets you stream thousands of titles in high definition, up to 1080p.
- Tens of thousands of TV episodes and movies, from Amazon Video, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV and more, plus games, music and apps.
- Now 75% more processing power, a dedicated graphics engine, better Wi-Fi support and 2GB of memory.
- Say it. Watch it. Simply speak into your voice remote to find TV shows, movies and games.
- No more buffering - ASAP learns what Amazon movies and TV episodes you like and buffers them for playback so they start right away.
- Great for gaming with a quad-core processor and dedicated Imagination GX6250 graphics engine. Add to the fun with optional game controllers.
- Amazon Prime members get unlimited access to Prime Video, including original programming such as Transparent, plus over 1 million songs with Prime Music.

Anyone know if its possible to get the Sky Go and BT Sport app working on a Firestick or Fire TV? I've just ordered a Fire TV (already got Firestick) for this purpose as I've got legit logins for both bt and sky go, but I'm not finding much up to date info

Sky Go won't work. No idea about BT though.

EDIT: See other comments below....seems I could be wrong on this!

Can you install a VPN on this without having to install on the router itself?

Yes you can. IP Vanish works fine on mine.
Great price. Lowest yet I believe.

The lowest it's been before is £64.99. Though notice its colder this morning than shortly after I went to bed last night ... oh well hehe

Some users have posted that they could sideload and get skygo working in the fire stick thread. If this is true, then it would also be possible on the fire 4k tv.

i sideloaded sky go, and it was working (mostly, occasionally had a fit) but needed to connect a mouse to the box to navigate.
Great price if you wanted a Fire TV!

Any one know how this one compares with the old one?
Which is a better buy for Kodi - Stick(£19) or Fire TV(£54)? I find the Fire stick a bit sluggish with Kodi at times.

Taking away optical digital form Fire tv is also a downer!:(
Get it for 49.99 if you use the £5 off on PrimeNow app code: SAVE5
Cheers, purchased, using the £10 discount via Audible. The £5 discount for £30 of gift vouchers hasn't appeared but I'll use that on something else (damn you Amazon).

Hopefully should provide a slightly more robust experience with ServerWMC than the stick does.
Use 'TRYITNOW' on Prime NOW APP to save £10!!!!
Tried using promo code, doesn't accept - first time user on prime now, Still good price.
There used to be another one. 30primenow. Nvidia shield TV is much better than this. It is £99 at Amazon today . It has true 4k with hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2. This one does not have hdmi 2.0.

I bought the original and the new 4k one came out just over a week later. Was gutted, until I saw no optical out.

Was the reason I never sent back and got the new one. Optical was a must for my Sony Surround.

Just got the stick for upstairs as a 2nd unit. Will try Kodi with it and hopefully good enough for occasional use and maybe hotspot my three mobile for if I'm staying in a hotel and want to watch a movie.

Hard wiring the Internet is a bugga. But for a unit not getting as much use. Pocket change is better than a more serious outlay and easier to shove in pocket for on the go.
Got 3 of the fire TV sticks - one for me, one for the Mrs and one for a mate.

Now what's the best stuff to install on them?

Cheers!

That's interesting. I thought Sky Go was pretty locked down to approved devices. I might give it a try.

Got mine today. First thing I installed was Kodi with the Exodus add on. Working very well indeed so far!
Very tempted! Does anyone know if the BT Sports app supports Ultra HD? Doesn't sound like 4Ks coming to Virgin anytime soon but watching the football in Ultra HD would be nice

Edit: 'Right now, there’s but a handful of services in the UK which are streaming or broadcasting 4K Ultra HD content and with the exception of BT Sport Ultra HD, all of them - that’s Netflix, Prime Instant Video and YouTube - are present on the 2015 Fire TV box.'

It doesn't. Only the BT Ultra HD Sports channel broadcasts in 4K which requires the UHD YouView box and needs to be wired to your Home Hub.

Great price for this box - superb for 4k on Prime, YouTube and Netflix. I've also installed Kodi, Mobdro etc on mine without issue.
