Info and specs of this US version on amazon.com/Kin…OB2

Amazon Kindle Fire now available; these are grey imports (US version) ,1yr warranty and not the upcoming localized version for the uk:

"As such the tablet can't access Amazon Kindle App store and video streaming although you should be able to purchase books through Amazon.co.uk and sync the Kindle Fire with your Amazon account to read books.

Currently shows "More than 10 available / 9 sold"

Looking forward to see Kindle Fire hit the UK, see how it competes with iPads and what impact it will have on price setting of Android tablets. Plus how hard it will be to keep it rooted.

Considering you can get the kindle app for android tablets that have far more features and cost less than this kindle fire I don't see this as a good deal.

A lot of people hoping the kindle fire will be a fully featured Android tablet are going to be disappointed by it when it is officially released here.

i got my mum one of these and shes never of the damn thing, between playing games to reading books she loves it, best xmas present to date and before people ask these work fine in the uk, just u can not use amazon prime video streaming, cloud storange or amazons app store YET but they will work soon once it all gets released here

No where near a ipad alternative, for a start its only 7" most will not like that small size..another i doubt it will even come close to how good a ipad is, as they say u get wot u pay for...if you want something cheap and cheerful get it just dont expect it to be the same as a ipad lol

I much prefer the electronic ink screens.

baaaa, bye sheep...yeh i guess the ipad 2 is the best all round packaged if you include content but i hate the chained os, they are overpriced and 10in screen is too big for alot of environments, and i despise itunes - the ipad 2 isnt as well specced as some though

Being a sheep having a ipad mm ok, your the one who compared it to a ipad not me lol

People love to **** apple products when the truth of it that most people cant afford them or not willing to pay the extra and love to convenience themselves that anything cheaper is better.

I am going on my own personal experience, not following anyone or anything, i personally hate 7" and i like the size and fuction off the ipad .

Well, you haven't "convenienced" me with your argument, perhaps you could get some apps to help you with the English language on your fancy space age machine.

And I hate 10 inch screens..hhmmm, good job they make 7 inch screens for people like me that prefer them.

Nice to see that we have responses prompted by an inferiority complex.

Little tip - it's just a piece of technology, there is no need to get worked up because someone wants an iPad 2. Ridiculous.

These are $199 in the US at the moment so when they are released here hopefully they will be cheaper than £188, that said their is no guarantee of that. I'll wait thanks.

yep...and there is always something better around the corner.

(written on my ipad2.... ;p)

The Kindle Fire is rumoured to be officially released this month in the UK. So it is probably wiser/safer/cheaper to wait a while if you are considering buying.

Typical $199 on Amazon.com works out at £129. & they will not ship to UK

Another example of ripoff Britain

Like the way u iFans think how rich u r. Affordability is nothing to do with ****ing apple. I do not want to spend 1/2 of my daily rate on things which r restrictive. U can continue to rule the iUniverse we mortals dont care. Why do u even bother to visit a site where people save money. Go and spend ur iMoney wherever ur iBrain takes u.

Good to hear your Mum is enjoying using it, but the things you've just said don't work on it in the UK are the main uses of the Kindle Fire.... which is why it's fairly pointless buying one until Amazon have the set-up organised outside of the US.

The thing is, it's not meant to be a iPad killer and those people foolishly hoping it will be a fully featured tablet deserve to be disappointed. It's basically a media tablet designed to deliver Amazon's media offerings. Videos, music, films & books, games, & some apps. It will be a far cheaper, smaller, simpler and less feature rich alternative to an iPad for some people. The fact is, people in the US who have bought it knowing what it is are very happy with it, the only ones that aren't happy are the people who were expecting too much!

@royals
Why must you troll every technology thread, and spout all your **** about how much you hate Apple? Nobody cares, it's getting very old, what are you 12?

Kindle fire is not really an ipad2 competitor. It only has 8gb of storage, is 7 inch and has no cameras. I think amazon are the ones touting it as that. This tablet is just as restricted as the ipad unless you root it, isn't it? I thought you could only buy content from the amazon app store unless you sideload apps. There is no microSD on this so it is pretty limited really. The B&N nook tablet is a better tablet once rooted (i got a nook color for about £60, overclocked it, installed CM7 and it runs everything really smoothly).

People who talk about android tablet beating Ipad are just deluded. The nook color (it is a name so I'm not spelling the word wrong) is my GF's tablet so she can watch TV shows and movies on the plane and play some games. We had previously bought her an Asus transformer but the tablet specific apps and games are just far more numerous and of higher quality on ipad. When she was at home and was able to use either tablet she always went for my ipad (mainly for boggle and the excellent "ticket to ride" app). I prefer android phones to iphone because you can actually appreciate the superior GS2 hardware because there is now basically an android app that has the same functionality as any IOS app. The android tablets will feel like a compromise until they can match IOS app for app.

For the rip-off Britain brigade; you need to divide the USA price by about 1.55 and then multiply by 1.2 to take VAT in to account and get a realistic comparison. Don't blame Amazon if they charge more over here. You need to blame your fellow UK citizens because Amazon will just charge what people are willing to pay.

Edit: i am aware that the Nook Color isn't available for sale over here but neither is the Kindle fire, officially.

Whats funny about that?

I think 7" is the ideal size...fits in your pocket and great for taking on holiday if your hotel has wifi

next Xmas they'll be around £100...I think I can hang on till then

I have an iPad 1 for tablet style browsing/apps and a Kindle 3 for reading. I would be interested if the Fire had a color e-ink display but it doesn't unfortunately.
I am not an iFanboy but I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 1 (if i were a rich iFanboy i would have iPhone4s and iPad 2 wouldn't i? lol) and the build and overall quality of them outstrips any other similar hardware i have handled. Also, most iHaters haven't actually had one of the devices they hate so much, so their opinions are worthless.
As to the deal; the price may be higher than in US and the features may not be functional, but it is the best deal I can find at the moment so it deserves heat. Judge a deal on it's own merits, not on what it isn't lol.

Heat added

Or you could just multiply the dollar price by 0.774 for a similar approximation, makes it into one simple step

I have a Fire, it took about 20 minutes to root and put android market on. I have to say it's wicked. Very slick in terms of performance, I think partly due to the way the processor splits up tasks. So far, I love it, and so does the Mrs. If I can't find it, chances are she's been using it. The only things I miss are gps and swiftkey for tablets. Some apps from android marketplace are not available or will not sideload if they require tech the Fire doesn't have such as gps or camera, but if you want these, don't buy a Fire! I read apple are trying to release yet another ipad in March, and I also read amazon are intending to release a follow up to the Fire around the same time. Though with release dates being what they are, I wouldn't hold my breath.

No need to root the fire. just dow n load the apps from the web or from your android phone. install them using the quick office file manager. you can also install pro launcher ex without root this give you a proper android home screen with widgets etc

Probably a good idea to make it in to one step as some people always forget the second bit.

I'm actually completely opposite to you, I would rather have an iphone or a Windows phone over an Android phone. Put for a tablet after borrowing and playing with the ipad 2 for a while I decided to get an Android tablet.

Reason being I love the customisation of an Android tablet, being able to download torrents, convert them, then stream it to my ps3, having flash for streaming football, organizing the home screen like how I want,... and many other things, it has literally replaced my laptop, only using the laptop for long word documents. But with a phone I just want something that works straight out the box, I don't want to customize or flash a rom to get the best out of it.

For me the Android tablet that I have definitely beats the ipad 2 I had, but everyone's different with different needs I guess.

With Blackberry Playbook getting Android Market (70% of it) in February, Don't you think it will be better to get that over the Fire? But I guess this is the cheapest currently for the Fire so heat added.

Oh, didn't know you could do that!

7" is too small. But if it's cheaper than 10" then people suddenly prefer the smaller size.

By the way, it's currently available from **** for £179.99 including delivery.
Edited by: "dz1" 11th Jan 2012

Amazon doesn't do free delivery for all products in America hence why prime is more popular there. Also consumer protection is different here than in the US and the market is smaller, bringing products to Europe means dealing with languages etc. Although frequently we get ripped off here, it really is more complex than just try to convert a dollar price to sterling for these kinds of products.
