Fourth book in the Death series.

"Superstition makes things work in the Discworld and undermining it can have Consequences. It’s just not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say Ho Ho Ho . . .

It's the last night of the year, the time is turning, and if Susan, Gothic governess and Death's granddaughter (sort of), doesn't sort everything out by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again . . ."

Susan had never hung up a stocking. She'd never put a tooth under her pillow in the serious expectation that a dentally inclined fairy would turn up. It wasn't that her parents didn't believe in such things. They didn't need to believe in them. They knew they existed. They just wished they didn't.

There are those who believe and those who don't. Through the ages, superstition has had its uses. Nowhere more so than in the Discworld where it's helped to maintain the status quo. Anything that undermines superstition has to be viewed with some caution. There may be consequences, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. When those consequences turn out to be the end of the world, you need to be prepared. You might even want more standing between you and oblivion than a mere slip of a girl - even if she has looked Death in the face on numerous occasions...

'Has the energy of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the inventiveness of Alice in Wonderland...It has also an intelligent wit and a truly original grim and comic grasp of the nature of things'
Sunday Times

'It is Pratchett's genius that he can allow for sophisticated adult musings on the nature of belief and existence at the same time as teenage zest for blood and mayhem'
Times Educational Supplement

You can read any of them individually, or in any order. If you plan to read several (very strongly recommended!), see here:

It's best to read them in order, however this is a pretty stand alone book and I can't really think of anything in this book which requires much knowledge of previous books, there are recurring characters in it but you don't need to know their backgrounds

Nah. There's a good reason they used this book as a standalone TV series. It's a fine place to start.

Also the first handful of books are a bit wonky as the series found it's feet, I wouldn't start with them anyway.

There are all sorts of places you can jump in, but if you find you like them I recommend publication order or close because of how his writing and world develops. Pretty much applies to any writer really, publication order > complex chronological orders.

Don't do it! I regret it, I charity shopped them all.
Thank you for posting this deal. We own the whole series in various incarnations (hardback, paperback) My 14 year old loves them but with Dyslexia & impaired visual perception he struggles with the print & due to joint problems has trouble holding/handling books sometimes. This edition downloaded straight to his Kindle is ideal as he can change screen colour/font etc & no tricky pages to turn! A perfect Christmas addition to his Kindle collection.

Keep an eye out. There's always one or two of his books on offer. Par is £1.99 but there are occasional books at 99p.
Thanks for posting. I love these books, what a great author, it is a shame he is no longer with us.
Thanks for the heads up, all I need now is time to read
