Is that the new euphemism for "old Kindle"? Great price nonetheless.
4gb memory
Text-to-speech
MP3 player

This is the best kindle there is.

If only they would make a paperwhite with these features!

These are the best kindles, I love mine

"Old" it may be, but better and more features than the new ones. I love mine and wouldn't swap it for a new one.
What is paper white?
Excellent find, 'go anywhere' rather than the current 'locked down' internet, I use mine in France a lot, it's a steal at this price.

Would definitely rather have this than the Nook I'm currently slogging around...hot!
Brilliant find. Wife just broken hers and was wanting another. Cheers!
Had mine since it came out, fantastic luv it worth every penny heat
+ £2.99 postage unless you order above £150
Free 3G
I'm still using my old Kindle and it's been fab in the last few years. The buttons are beginning to play up a bit, but it still works well considering the age and amount of stick it's had. Bargain.

Same here.
This might have a lot of features but does not
seem to have a touchscreen. Having to enter
words means using the so called "easy to use
5 way controller" which takes an age to look
up definitions etc. 3G is great but this "stone
age" navigation system is lousy, my wife has
one and hates it.

it is call the "keyboard kindle" for a reason, you use the keyboard to enter words, not the 5 way controller.

The clue is in the word "keyboard", genius. Maybe you missed it, or maybe this is the lamest trolling effort of all time.
If I remember rightly is this the one with 3G that works for free globally? Could be used as a very cheap way of accessing emails abroad (in grey scale obviously).
You think Amazon will keep paying for the data forever?
I have one of these and I once used it to access the basic HTML version of gmail on a cruise ship off the cost of the Alaska for free, on the back of the ship's phone mast (which is usually very, very chargeable). I can confirm it worked and it cost me nothing.

Snap! (No pun intended)

I have googled to try to find out whether Kindles can be repaired but can't find anything.
I bought her a Nexus 7 as a replacement which I got John Lewis to pricematch to the recent Staples offer but she ain't a happy bunny.

Looks like I'll have to use 2 Nexus (Nexi ?) and buy a new Paperwhite for the missus.

Anyone got any advice on whether Kindles can be repaired - seems a shame to just bin it.

Call Amazon customer services. They do not repair, but will give you a credit on a new Kindle (assuming out of guarantee).
Thanks, will order one for myself.
Amazon were unable to replace my 3G version when I broke it so I have a Paperwhite instead. Miss the audio functions and the free browser when on holiday.
Yes they can be repaired. I repaired one that had been dropped and didn't turn on. Got one with a cracked screen from eBay and swapped the motherboard. Wasn't easy and took a bit of patience but took my time following a YouTube video and it worked. I still get a sense of satisfaction from it and my partner is still impressed that I managed to do it!
love mine. they do now limit the 3g to 50mb/month I think....
Is this the original version of the keyboard kindle? So new as in unused but still the old version? Mine recently broke and Amazon offered a 20% discount on their current models. So I went for the paperwhite but I do miss the keyboard one :).

Yes I think it is the original keyboard but new as in unused. I replaced my damaged keyboard with a paperwhite and am tempted to get a keyboard one again. Things I miss: 3g; audiobook; but most of all the page forward button on the left hand side when I am holding it with one hand.

Am I right in thinking that this model requires an external light to read it in the dark/low light. Whereas the paperwhite is backlit? Just trying to decide on this or paperwhite for £89. Thanks.

Yes, it isn't 'lit' in any way.

Thanks shanedean
I had a 3g kindle, it was great a few years back when travelling as wifi was not readily available for free, however, times have changed. Most hotels I have been to recently have free wifi, the only advantage with the 3g kindle is when travelling by train/boat etc.
I personally prefer the paper white now as I can not live without a backlit screen.
great device I have one on m my bag for years and got second one for my mam only thing missing is a built in light
Incredible price. Just wish I needed a new one.

They pulled the plug on that a while back. you used to be able to access web and email globally but now only access to amazon is available. Wiki lasted a bit longer but email went first. Not sure that all countries went at the same time, but I used mine through France Spain and Portugal last year, or should I say tried, no luck. Gmail was getting difficult anyway because of their updates.
So don't buy this for free roaming, but it's still the best kindle imo.

When did this happen? I don't use mine often bar on hols, took it to Spain in Aug and France in Dec last year and was able to use it without restriction on 3G mainly for BBC News, Gmail and Google Maps/traffic, worked fine.

I always wondered how long it would be before someone came up with a software hack that would enable it to be USB teathered and used a free 3G dongle across the world. Did this happen?

In fact presumably it must have a sim card in it. I wonder if it would have been possible to just take the sim card out and put it in another device. As long as you knew the access point details that should have worked. Although if there was a 50mb monthly limited prob wouldn't have been very worthwhile!

I wasn't aware of a monthly limit. I wouldn't have thought it would have a sim card in it, the only reason we have sim cards is so they swapped from phone to phone and amazon wouldn't want this. The actual chip inside a sim is really small and the plastic exterior wouldn't be required in the kindle. I wonder now if the whole 3g card is mini pci-e and would just slot in to a laptop. I'll consult Google when I find the time.
