I've never had any success with Carplan de-icer. My experience is that It melts powdery snow on the windscreen, but it has no effect on ice at all..

Even cheaper to just use a scraper.......takes as long to go round with a can of de-icer than it does to just use a scraper....
Even easier on my motor with heated screenwashers

If your out of a scraper or a can of deicer then use one of these, clears your window screens in double quick time....and it doesn't scratch or mark the glass.

Thanks ordered as cant be arsed going around the discount stores
My car was a block of ice this morning, Using my last can it cleared the front and side windows very well.
Even did a good job on the headlights.
Cheaper delivered than when I have to drive 10 miles to a poundland type shop and pay to park plus fuel even at £0.10p a can.
Is this good or not? For ice..
Always works for me ok. Thanks OP

Why would you drive 10 miles for a can of De icer surely you'd buy it when you were in town o shopping, unless you were really desperate for it , in which case Amazon wouldn't be much good anyway especially as it's upto 3 weeks wait.

Use a can normal or slightly warm water. More effective than de-icer.

Downside to that method is in really low temperatures it freezes as ice on the windscreen that''s even worse to remove than the frost.
Can't beat a good scraper....
Edited by: "Uridium" 7th Feb
I rarely get in to that problem. I switch on the wipers once the ice is melted. I always use slightly warm water.
Rubbish strength this.... better to go for the lower temperature ones down to minus 40 degrees... much more effective and less likely to allow refreeze

For Costco members out there, the Prestone Rapid De Icer (-40c) is a Billy Bargain at £7.18 for 6 off 600ml cans. Google and read the reviews, they say it all and remember the reviews are based on paying a LOT more than £1.20 a can.

Going Costco today. I'll get one of these
This stuff is okay for the local climate; a combination of deicer, car heater and quick wipe usually gets the car ready to go within just a couple of minutes. I prefer the spray though (not cheap here):

The shops will be selling them off for 10-50p soon. They do it every year!
Does the job for me, and for 99p it's a good price

This is no good when you need some in February though is it.
Says usual delivery 1 - 3 weeks. It will be spring before it arrives for me. Also available at pounds shops, discount shops and supermarkets for £1 or less
Buy a spray bottle somewhere and fill it with a strong mix of windscreen wash. For a one off couple of quid for the bottle you'll have a nicer smelling, refillable set up that doesn't freeze your hand as it discharges! And if you own a car surely you have a bottle of screenwash somewhere. As long as the screen wash is good quality i find it'll be every bit as effective if not more

Huh? .... what brand of screenwash are you buying and using that has the same de-icing effect as a stand alone de-icer?

Lidls strong wash which will work down to -60 degrees C undiluted. What sort of temperatures do we need it down to in the UK usually minus single figures so still more than capable when diluted slightly
Usually dispatched within 1 to 3 weeks.

There is a difference between a liquid that has a low freezing point (i.e a good winter Screenwash) and a chemical or liquid that rapidly breaks down ice particles and thus has a defrosting effect. Are you saying that Lidl screenwash used neat is a fast? effective windscreen de-icer?

In my own personal experience having tried both (and afterall thats all i can base my answer on) then yes. Perhaps different if I lived in a part of the world where winter night's brought -35 temps but I don't.
I always find the pressure dissipates once left in the car... a small dribble of fluid doesn't do the job. Plus this ruins the integrity of the wiper blades so you'll need to replace them faster.
Another hot GB deal, they don't deliver to N. Ireland!

Interesting, and reading up some more it would appear that there would be some driving effect where the screenwash freezing level was -40/-50/-60 due to higher levels of alcohol, an anti-freeze and other chemicals, but it would not be as rapid or effective as a standalone de-icer. On the basis I do the whole car, the Prestone Rapid is the best bet for me.

Reason why it's so cheap, is because it doesnt work. Tried it, after applying it 3 times, still frozen, had to get the ice scraper out.
this year decided to try out these de icer mambo jumbo. Scraper is much cheaper and effective. Only minus for me is - noise.
These de icers are only good against really thin layer of ice. Also there is another down side, even when the ice melts, its stays as a liquid, might be an issue on side windows.

Well you don't sound to be from the Scottish Highlands anyway! Definitely not the case up here sometimes I'm sure I wake up, and my car isn't there. Just an igloo instead.

But some folk can't actually use scrapers for disabilities and other reasons. Sometimes I can't even get to the ice in middle of my windscreen with my scraper, with an extendable pole section - cause I can't bend that way, or push hard enough, with the way the disease is acting that day/month.

Also... Find this particular brand. Pretty useless on igloo cars in Scottish winters (or "Summers")
Use water and save your money and the environment
