That's just the cores. Check the ppi

“Just the cores” ? You prioritise the ppi over the cores, then conclude with “triumphs” ?

326ppi is plenty sharp, it’s a tiny screen dude not a 21” monitor.

Enjoy your galaxy note

Yes me too! Giving it a pass..good for those who are not crazy about buying the latest
The Samsung galaxy note 4 still triumphs this XR.

Agreed. I have the XS and wish I saved the money and got an XR for the larger screen, longer battery life etc. The screen on the XS is “better” but to me, it’s only noticeable when they’re side by side and you’re comparing them. The screen on the XR is no slouch by any means (same ppi as the iPhone 8 but on a larger screen).

How's the battery on the XS?

The issue is that once you go above 300ppi it really is diminishing returns. I have tried my Samsung S9+ at 1440 and 1080 and I can hardly tell the difference under normal usage.

Yep hence the discount
Finally got my hands on one of these the other day and honestly, compared to my XS Max (and X before that), the XR is 95% the phone the XS range are and plenty for the majority. I probably would have got the XR on reflection if I didn’t use the better camera setup regularly, it’s just a shame people (including me) see it as the budget option - when in reality, the display is plenty good enough, the cameras are good, it’s fast and the battery lasts ages. It does feel thick but in a reassuring kind of way.

I’m sure Apple knows it’s a good enough phone for most so they cripple it with one less camera deliberately. Anyway, as 5G is taking its foothold fast in the UK I think I will skip the 2019 iPhone as rumours say Apple won’t support it til 2020 at least - always behind the curve...

Remember vast majority of users won’t be able to use 5g on some networks anyway as it won’t have full UK coverage for years. I still struggle for 3G in a lot of places.

Yes I know. I can’t use 5G in Southampton til the end of the year at least but I’m also sure as hell not spending £1500 on a phone (or whatever price Apple pulls out its rear for the UK market) for a flagship that can’t support 5G at this time either. At least if I buy the Galaxy S10 5G or the Note10 I’ll get 5G support. For that reason, the XR is looking like a better option for many. If Apple’s 2019 flagship doesn’t have 5G support (and it’s very likely it won’t) then at these prices, many people will skip it.

That and also I’m sure it will ruin second-hand prices as who wants a top-end phone without top-end features?

People are grown up enough to make their own minds up. If it's the cheapest for what it is, then it's a deal. No one is forcing anyone to buy it.

Otherwise we could rename the site dumbukopinions and post stupid stuff all day.

Its probably worth waiting, it’s looking like 5G is going to be a bit of a fustercluck at first, as an example I’ve seen reports that a Oneplus 7 Pro 5G bought from EE (unlocked) will not work on Vodafone 5G and quite likely vice versa due to differing profiles being activated in the handsets.

Android 5G looks to be going the same way as Android VoLTE did with each network choosing slightly different standards, at least initially.

Wise people will be the ones to wait 12 months before laying out £££’s this year on the first generation of 5G phones.

That's part of the problem but also that I don't want a 4G-only full-price flagship. I imagine it will be a nightmare like 3G and 4G. I just don't want to pay silly money for obsolete phone technology right off the bat.

5G is going to be complimentary to 4G so a 4G phone isn’t going to be obsolete for quite some time, with all the problems of network compatibility and the fact the first 5G phones are slightly Frankensteined with a 4G chip and a separated X50 5G chip rather than the entire radio being on a single chip (the X55 4G/5G chip will be here in the next batch of phones) means anyone buying the current phones is almost as obsolete as a 4G only phone.

Would you pay £1500 for an iPhone knowing it’s lacking this technology even if it was a separate chipset initially? I would avoid the 2019 model and stick with what I have for now for that exact reason.

I wouldn’t pay £1500 for any phone.

not unless it’s made of gold and encrusted with 1 carat diamonds...

Then you’re expecting too much for £1500

Some of us might accept paying that much for a phone that is close to a high-end laptop in performance and what you can do with it, combined with how much you actually use it on a daily basis.
