Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

The Xbox Elite Series 2 controller is wonderful but expensive. What if it was… (nearly) the same price as a regular controller? That’s right, it’s only £67.30 at checkout

You must go to other sellers/new/used, scroll down to the Used/Warehouse section, there will be a bunch for £84.12, and a 20% code will be added at checkout, it tells you this in the description.

The one I purchased yesterday was labelled as package imperfections, seems as people purchase them the listing changes slightly.

Really good value if the controller is like every other Warehouse item I have ever received and for the price, definitely worth the punt, if not, send it back, hassle free and fee free.

Also, credit where credit is due, DigitalFoundry posted this on twitter.

Got a couple of these last July for £59 each and due to intermittent button issues managed to blag a full refund from Amazon and was allowed to keep them.

They were still in warranty so sent them into Microsoft and had them replaced twice but still had issues even though replacements appeared to be new. Now I have 4 extra sets of cases and accessories since these aren't sent to them.

Got fed up so finally decided to fix these 2 elites and a similarly faulty regular series controller.

The most difficult part was taking them apart without damaging case if you don't have one of those plastic prying tools. Also make sure you don't accidentally cut any internal wires to the motors.

Determined that the cause of face button issues was that the face button holes were minutely too large for the buttons and allowed the buttons to push down at an angle off the vertical centre. The holes were slightly bigger on elites so suffered this problem more. If the button bottom pushes the conductive pad beneath it downwards at an angle then the circular pad is potentially only pressed onto the circuit board along one of its edges.

When a button is pressed it pushes a rubber conductive pad onto the circuit board and this is supposed to bridge the circuit on the PCB, however the button bridging circuit is the worst designed in history and only bridges if the contact pad faces it directly or if pressed in:
    Buttons X and A - 5 or 11 o'clock directions
    Buttons Y and B - 2 and 8 o'clock directions

I stuck one piece of scotch tape onto another piece so that it was double thickness.

I cut two small pieces and stuck them to the opposite diagonals of the cylindrical button, so for button A it'll be the 2 and 8 o'clock directions since we don't want the button to angle towards those diagonals. It would be fine if the button angles towards 5 and 11 o'clock. If you put tape around the whole button then it'll be too sticky.

The tape needs only cover from the bottom edge of the button (when button is removed) to the point where it doesn't protrude from the face of the button hole (with face plate removed).

If the button sticks then you might consider using only 1 thickness scotch tape on one or both sides.
Talcum powder fixed any minor stickiness for me.

If it appears that the button doesn't register a click even though it appears to click then you could cut a circular piece of tape and stick this onto the bottom of the button. Make sure it fits inside the circular rim.

Later on I also experimented with applying a very thin coat of super glue to the inside diagonals of the button holes. The super glue could be filed down if the button doesn't glide smoothly, however talcum powder is a must. Super glue could also be used to improve button sensitivity on the bottom of the buttons. Of course you must ensure the glue is completely dried before testing.

It now has been several months since I have fixed my controllers and I have not encountered any missed button presses or sticky button issues.

And if you're lucky, use the warranty if it's not doing what it should do. You'll get a replacement, not your original controller.

How do u use/check the warranty?

You can add items to your Microsoft account. When the controller arrives just add it using the serial number and it will tell you what coverage you have

Great controller but terrible quality, originally had 1 as a gift, had to replace after about 3 weeks as the bumper started double pressing. Returned to Currys, and they actually send 2 back by mistake. I have been using each one until they break, usually about 3 months later, and returning this and using the other until this breaks. So far I must have sent back maybe 4 or 5 in the space of about 12 months, similar issues with bumpers either not responding or double pressing, or the paddles not responding. 12 month warranty is a blessing on these, but they tend to send back what looks like a brand new product.

Just stuck mine in a drawer after three repairs. The changeable components are redundant when everything breaks before you need to change it.

First thing to go was the left trigger, would not compress all the way in. Fixed that by taking it apart and removing a bit of sponge that had come loose and got stuck in the spring mechanism.
Next was the shoulder buttons - this is the most common issue with the controller, shoulder buttons stop compressing. I took it apart again, replaced both of those, had to de-solder the old ones and solder on new. Then a few weeks later, it's developed stick drift, so I've replaced the analog... Now the right trigger is clacking and sticking! I've ordered a razer pad to see if it's any better. My two decade journey to find either a reliable controller or at least one which is repair friendly continues!

Thanks for this, i've been looking to upgrade my v1 for a while now on the cheap as the Argos near me never had any of the v2 special's on so this is the next best thing. Make sure to select the one that's £84.12 and not the cheaper ones as they don't come with the 20% off code at checkout!

It's a Wolverine V2 wired pad. I was lucky enough to get one brand new for £46 on ebay. There was only two available at the time, though, so doubt it'll be available now

Mine arrived today, was supposed to be damaged box but the charge dock has been stolen and the S/N doesn't match the box. Scumbags who did it and useless Amazon. At least is has warranty until September, I'm tempted to try and claim money back for a replacement stand instead but I can't find anything that's designed for the elite.

I have registered it on my Microsoft account and the warranty expired on 30/12/2020 so it will be going back.It must be well over 2 years old if it originally come with a years warranty. How long has Amazon had these?

Mine was also a bit filthy so likely been a similar situation. Probably stolen or faulty and swapped out so they can get a new one out of warranty, clearly Amazon aren't checking the contents. Amazon offered me a £25 refund so mine would be £42 if I didn't bother replacing the dock that I could realistically live without. I suppose that's a good price with 6 months MS warranty/12 months Amazon warranty. Yet to test it, it there's any issues I could swap out under MS warranty.
They also agreed that I could send an image of a Used - Very Good AW listing when they come in and they's honor the 20% discount still, or at least I'd pay no more than I paid for this one.

EDIT: Tried the serial number of the one on the box and that was registered as new last week

EDIT 2: If you have a missing charging dock you can get it replaced by MS for £8.52! I think that £25 refund is sounding much more worthwhile. (edited)

I bought brand new not along ago and straight out the box the A button only registers if pressed directly centre. There are thousands of posts re quality and common faults. Iv reassigned A to one of the paddles in the meantime and have thought about exchanging but no idea what new problems the new controller will come with. I really like the controller but for the price it really is ridiculous the sheer amount of common issues they have, a lot of them from straight out the box

Packaging will be damaged. Minor cosmetic imperfection on top, front or sides of item." or similar and I wonder does this means the packaging and controller will have some light damage? Or just the box.

I have bought loads of things that have been marked as cosmetically damaged, and every single time I have never seen a mark on the item. I think it might be a blanket description, but with these, they could litterally mean there's a mark on the bag/case it comes with. So it's a gamble for sure, but not one you're gonna loose out on.

Yes this is what was wrong with a elite controller I got off of Amazon Warehouse before. I sent it back to Microsoft as others above have said, and they sent back one that hasn't had a fault since (plus you get an additional case, USB cable and paddles etc).

Already tried that with one of these. Most of them have defects and issues. The amazon staff dont test them really but button registration issues and stuff like that. The warranty was long gone on the one i got.

Imo avoid unless you dont mind returns.

I bought the first gen one a few years ago and after a while the A button started having issues as well... Registering double taps when just pressing the button once. Made Rocket League unplayable.

Also the rubber grips started expanding/falling off and right stick started drifting. .. Shocking build quality especially for the price, and this 2nd gen has plenty of complaints and common faults itself.

I like the features and weight/feel but wouldn't trust these controllers for durability. (edited)

To be honest, if they nail the QC on the next one, I would definitely buy another one, as it is quality otherwise. As mentioned, I forgot I too had the a-button issue. Fortunately no stick drift either. I’m currently using the controller that came with my series X and it is a lot better, in terms of the bumper actually working, and the a-button is far more reliable. Shame it feels so low quality otherwise compared to the Elite

Yup. I had this issue on four controllers. I don’t understand how people are so forgiving to Microsoft and ignorant of the numerous faults these controllers have out of the box. Shameful Microsoft is continuing to peddle them out too. I’d have my money back over getting a partial refund or fix because it is guaranteed to fail again, whether it be button, analog or paddles.
