Hi there,

A socket AM2 or AM2+ motherboard is what your looking for.

Oh yeah! I knew that much at least haha. Just.. which etc.. *sigh*

Wish I could do what Cdiscounts do ( pay in 3 installments no interest xD ) I'd buy a brand new super spec comp!

any1 know how well these oc?

What is the Intel equivalent of these CPUs?

Rather good deal, I'd say. It's obscene how powerful these Phenom chips are. I've got a 2.4GHz 9750, and I was playing around with it earlier today and, man. This time last year, I was struggling to run HD video at all on my Pentium 4 2.4GHz system. Now, well, there's no real reson for anyone to play seven HD movies side by side over two massive displays. But it does look impressive when the system can do it all without skipping a frame. In a geeky way, anyway.

Dont buy this one!! spend an extra £20 and get the Phenom II 940 Black Edition scan.co.uk/Pro…ail

The 940 overclocks like a dream is unlocked and performs better than the QX9770 which costs over £1000 from some vendors dabs.com/pro…3Q8

Basically if you got the cash the 940 is a beast.....

Core I7 920 is the equivalent but obviously the core I& 920 cpu costs around £70 more also a Core I7 mobo and ddr 3 will set you back a few hundred quid, but a phenom II 920 or 940 will slot into existing am2/am2+ mobos with a bios update. amd is back in the game....

i have a pc that has am2 socket could i just buy this and replace the existing processor?

You need to find out what motherboard you have and then see if a bios update is available to allow support for phenom II if so just update and then grab a 940....

My 940 gets to 3.5GHz at stock voltage, which seems to be fairly normal for them. 3.8 is doable with a voltage bump. I'm seriously impressed with this chip, it absolutely flies.

it is nice to see the race back on, should mean some worthwhile price cuts from all corners

As powerful as they are, the Intel equivalents are faster clock for clock.

Ha,
I know how to handle my money it's just im VERY impatient to be honest
Like.. I can save up for 5 months but I hate it, i'd rather buy it all at once and straight away haha

If it is performance wise (NOT flagship AMD range vs Intel's)

Phenom II X4 940 (£155.24) - between Core 2 Quad Q9400 (£197.77)/Q9550 (£231.12)

Phenom II X4 920 (£189.26) - between Core 2 Quad Q9300 (£191.81) /Q9400 (£197.77)

At these prices, these AMD CPUs are the better buy than their performance equivalent Intel CPUs

Full review:

the main reason these have come down in price on a number of sites is because of the release of the new AMD cpu that will be released on the 9th of Feb AM3. There is a site that is taking Pre-orders for new cpu AMD Phenom II X4 810 Quad Core CPU (2.6ghz) for £165 delivered

Before anyone says that is a slower CPU than the 920 (2.8ghz) as the new CPU is AM3 it runs better clock to clock then the am2+. Another thing am3 cpu will work in a am2+ m/board with ddr2 memory but if you want to use ddr3 memory you will have to buy a new m/board that will only take a am3 cpu

AM2 motherboards, dont work well (or at all in my case) with these. The AM2+ ones on the scan website are the ones your after, 790x 790fx 790gx are the better ones.

On tomshardware the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition is 9% faster than the Q6600, which can be had in most very cheap pcs so i dont see any point what so ever in buying the amd unless you are going to overclock, but for most people buy a Q6600 which is like £130

£135 at scan - running it now! - cheapest there is is scan.

Its not that price anymore, more like £150.

I was going to go for the 940, but then decided on the 925, which is the AM3 version of the 920 but it has only 95w TDP, the 920 is 125w TDP.

Id say if you need to buy a new motherboard & cooler its probably best to see whats going to happen, especially if the AM3 chips turn out to be much better on AM3 motherboards, which will probably be expensive.

Q6600 is £157.16 Inc VAT on scan.

this sounds great, has anyone built a comp with this?

i'm looking at building a computer, what else would i need with this??

Hope this helps

I've read very mixed reviews about these CPUs so decided against them and as someone as suggested I went for a cheaper option with the Q6600 which is a very capable overclocker..of course with the correct cooling and a decent mobo...if you can afford it then the i7 is the way to go as that is a performance that cannot be matched by AMD at the present time.....at the end of the day it's down to what you can afford and what you want from a PC rig.

Both of these show and have shown up for me at £5 more expensive than the OP.

You need to go to Today only on Scans page..

I cant remember when I paid over £100 for a new CPU! I'm getting old

i7 is just too good, so no amd until they can seriously catch on

thanks for post though

The phenom II 940 outperforms the intel QX9770... that chip is around £1000. its far better than the Q9400 and q9300.. it also competes with the core i7 920, they expect that the new am3 ddr3 versions i.e phenom 945 and phenom 950 etc will outperform the core i7 920but at a lower cost....

would be looking at about £300-400

thanx

spannerz;4245151

would be looking at about £300-400

Phenom II £150
AM2+ 790X Motherboard £80
4GB PC26400 DDR2 £30
Branded Case inc PSU £50
1GB Sata Hard Drive £70
Sata DVDRW £15
ATI Radeon HD4850 £100
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM £60

That lot of bare-minimums totals around £550. Obviously you'll need Keyboard and Mouse and Display to go with it.
You can knock £100 off and swap the Motherboard for a 790GX (onboard Video) if you don't play games...

£300-£400 isn't going to buy you a machine of Phenom II calibre...

I bought a Q9550 (2.83 GHz) about 3 or 4 months ago for £180. Are these faster?

In in all, there's not much difference. The Phenom 2 940 would be slightly faster.

heh, yes i normally get whatever is around £40. (4 years ago was Sempron 3000+ overclocked hugely, 2 years ago Athlon x2 3600+ overclocked hugely.. now.. not sure maybe i'd get this scan.co.uk/Pro…ail since not many apps use more than 2 cores still..
