Well depends what you want your system for. As you are looking at one that supports crossfire then am guessing gaming. If so then ideally you want one with a 790fx chipset as it supports 2 graphics cards at x16. The equivalent model to the one you are looking at will set you back about £30 more. Model: GA-MA790FXT-UD5P.

I bought a MSI G-65 790GX for £80 odd quid from ebuyer its crossfire 140w cpu ready good board aswell

Not a bad price, the heatsink 7 fan are crap though 40 degrees idle in the last rig I built with one of these.

Ive got this CPU and the UD5P board have it clocked at 3.8Ghz solid 24/7

wonder if there the c3 revision like the new 965,s are....hmmm

heard there filtering down the line

no , some have them on the xtreme forums

i was one of the first to get a c3 965 here in the uk, scan got them in real quick

Voted hot but i recommend the i5 750 if your willing to spend £25 more. Its a much better processor.

Do not use the stock fan supplied with these, its absolute junk. My last micro atx system was idling at around 50c. Even with a low spec game running it was going over 60c, which just isnt healthy.

Yes but your not putting a i5 on a £30 mobo!

It's great for people who have a AM2+ mobo or are upgrading. This and cheap mobo keeping the DDR2 ram they have.

Will have to see how it all pans out with Intels new i3, i5 competing against AMD chips. Also how quick they (AMD) can get the Thuban CPU to market.

I have that motherboard with the same processor, and i have to say its pretty good, got mine running at 3.8ghz on air no problem.

This is the older C2 revision, which iws HDZ955FBGIBOX. The newer C3 revision is HDZ955FBGMBOX, which draws slightly less power and runs slightly cooler, but the average gamer wouldn't notice a difference, it's only a matter of preference for hardcore overclockers looking to get 4GHZ stable.

Very good processor, the flagship 965 is even faster at £140-£145

I have just built an I5 750 + Gigabyte P55m + 4gb 1600mhz DDR3

Its cheaper to build an AM3 System, but not much cheaper, I'd go Intel, lower power consumption, possibly better socket for futureproofing

You cant really go wrong with any of the Quad Cores.

I don't want to start an AMD vs Intel war even though i agree that for the money, right now the i5 is a very good deal, i would still go for the Phenom II 955.

LGA1156 being more future proof? I have to disagree, AM3 is confirmed as being compatible with Thuban 6 core AMD processor in Q2 2010 and LGA1156(i5) cannot do PCI express 16x/16x it is restriced to 8x/8x.

Dang, I paid about £190 back in August for this. Was thinkin it was a bargain back then . ach well, what can ye dae!

For those decidin what motherboard to put this in, I ended up stickin it in the MSI 790FX-GD70 WInki Edition motherboard. Stock heatsink is rubbish. My shiznit temperature idles about average 40C and thats on low power mode. I recommend gettin a better heatsink.

Oh yeah and I put it together with a Sapphire ATI 4890 OC graphics card.

Heat and repped given!

Good indication of performance ]here

Ordered mine from Amazon the other day. Managed to get this, a Gigabyte mobo, coolermaster case, 4GB DDR3 1333MHz, and DVD-RW for under £280. Recycled a 320Gb HDD, 400W PSU from my old PC. Looking for a 4890 for under £100 now...

I currently have spare ddr2 ram 2gb x2

Am I right in saying if I were to get this and a AM3 mobo my ddr2 ram cannot be use for this setup as it seem to support ddr3? If not which quad amd/intel to go for so I can make use of my ddr2 rams.

pretty sure this can use both DDR2 & DDR3, this combined with me being able to use my zalman 9700 cooler has me contemplating a switch from intel...

You can buy this and an AM2+ DDR2 motherboard.

The Phenom II can use DDR2 memory but you have to get an AM2+ motherboard, or an AM3 one with DDR2 support (which is essentially the same thing as AM2+).

Ordered from them before, no problems.

Sounds like they're just starting out, and their prices are low to get the punters in.

Errr no actually. It was probably be the cause of much derisory chortling on this board, but although I am technical (I am a server support engineer), I am not a gamer and I had to look up what 'Crossfire' is. I would like a decent, low to mid budget PC that will last 4-5 years. I have always built my own PCs and this is about how long I keep them for. I want to run Windows 7, and I want my computer to be able to keep up with the numerous applications I acquire over time. Having said that, I used to play games as a kid, and I would like the option of being able to install some new ones. However, game playing is not likely to take up more than 1% of the time my PC is on. Basically, I want an equivalent mobo to the CPU (I don't want to put in a V12 multivalve engine into a knackered old Lada), that is not too expensive, supports RAID 10, has at least 6 sata slots, and is OK witth ddr3.

Can you still unlock the other 2 cores on the AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition with a Gigabyte board, Worked for me a few months ago.

You can stll get an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition and unlock the other 2 cores. Built one last week using a Gigabyte board. £68 for a Quad core that will overclock.

so....

AMD PHENOM II X2 550 3.1GHZ

& Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3

for £118 delivered from pricelover and I could potentially have a quad core that will overclock up to 4ghz

any way of knowing if that board is rev 1 or 2 as apparently only rev 2 supports the unlock.

Well I used the Gigabyte GA-M720-US3, Which is £5 cheaper and only Rev 1.

Mmmm looked good for a nano second!
No graphics
No Ram
Not much else.......

I added each to my basket and clicked checkout and the magical pricelover people worked it out for me.

what are the chances of getting an unlockable 550 though? looking around the net it seems to be 50/50 and I wouldn't really want to be stuck with just the dual core.

went for it, x2 550 and the GA M720 US3 mentioned above for £113 delivered....even if they won't unlock I'm still guaranteed to be blown away by the difference from my pentium D.
