I just bought a Phenom 555, unlocked the cores - now it i speedier than my overclocked 550 in my main PC (cannot unlock the cores on the MB)- so I ordered the 955 from Dabs.
The 955 was over £200 when I biult my main machine in 2009.

It has 2 PCI slots, but i think any reasonably good GPU would cover the PCI slot next to it. Bit of a shame really, because not many boards have 2x PCI-E ports for that price.

Pretty old chip, but good for most things. AMD are only good for ppl who don't really want to upgrade their mobo. Which is one of the few things that makes them quite competative to Intel.

This chip can be heavily O/C'd so hot it's from me and hot from the pro.

Great budget quad core imo.

Thanks OP

should add tho this board has had probs and hope they are sorted. looked at newegg reviews and lots of the poor reviews were down to the board just dying after a few weeks.

btw was surprised to see "NEW" cpu's when browsing AMD AM3 quad cores on Scan (with buldozer out soonish). Anyone know where to get the lowdown on expected releases for AM3 (quad and hax ) my googling of two weeks ago brought 0 up.

There are a few boards very similar specs and within £5 & £20 I am still struggling to find out what the difference is :

Asus M4A87TD EVO, AMD 870, AM3, 4DDR3, 2PCI-Ex16, CrossfireX 16x4x, RAID, 8CHHD, USB3 & SATA6, ATX = £87.58

Asus M4A87TD/USB3 AMD 870, AM3, 4DDR3, PCI-Ex16, RAID, 8CHHD, USB3 & SATA6, ATX = £81.96

Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3, AMD 880G, AM3, 4DDR3, DSUB DVI HDMI, 2PCI-Ex16, Raid,USB3 & SATA6, ATX= £96.94

and I Guess this Processor would go well with any of the above boards

Newer and better. Too bad most will probably have to replace their mobo and of course the sandy bridge issues. And what have we got from the AMD stable?

Cheers for all replies to my question...

Is this the same board as above? Click here

Its only £53.99 on Scans today only page.

opinions on a postcard please :-)

One other question - would the AMD CPU Phenom II 965 Black be worth the extra £15 or so over the 955? (prices again from Scans today only Page).

You're right about the C2/C3, couldnt see the part number on my iPhone. I had been keeping my eye on this CPU and now it's a great deal, have to convince the other half to let me buy it now...

I was going for this mobo as I can't afford a GPU for a while but it seems to have jumped in price: amazon.co.uk/gp/…REY

Wont be any new AM3 processors as AMD is moving away from the socket and 45nm process. AM3+ boards for Bulldozer will accept AM3 processors but only details of one board has been released (ASRock). The replacement for Athlon (Llano) will use socket FM1.

Have this motherboard and it's awesome, have a phenom II x6 with mine, even with the stock heatsink and fan on it and OC'd just a tiny bit using the asus smart OC in the bios to 3.3Ghz per core it rarely goes above 25C for most tasks... at the moment it's sitting at 17C and even when I stress tested it it only went up to 35C.

Thats what I'd have thought but two "new" AM3 cpu's here:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Shop/Computer-Hardware/All/CPUs-AMD/AMD-Phenom-II-(S-AM3)-Quad-Core

I think they've been available in the states for a while. New for here but just clock bumps on the same CPUs it seems.

Nothing new there? If you mean 975BE and 840 (AKA Athlon 650) been out a while. Some people were expecting Thurban based (binned hex's) quads with turbo but they never appeared.

Yes it is the same board.

Great price - time for an upgrade :-)

People write off AMD. Its true they are not as good as intel for the top end. But for most peoples needs and including basic gamers AMD are very reasonably priced compared to their intel comparison chips. Sandybridge has changed this a little but taking into consideration the cheap AMD motherboards they still hold the market for the average user IMO.

You could buy the 955 and overclock it to 3.4ghz if you wanted to match the 965's speed.
If you are talking about overclocking potential then the 955 might not reach 4ghz whereas the 965 almost definitely would...however lots of people do get 4ghz from the 955.

The older C2 955 was pretty crap for overclocking but if it says the chip is the 125w edition it is the C3, the C2 was 140w. I seriously doubt anywhere has the C2 in stock now.

I am tempted by this as my X2 550 unlocked to 4 cores and then changed it's mind when I added another 2GB of ram, lol.

Edited by: "stonebear" 20th Feb 2011

Also worth considering is the new Phenom II X4 840 for £79.

scan.co.uk/pro…ing

However, it is really a re-branded Athlon II as it has no L3 cache.

Anyone recommend a reasonably priced motherboard to go with this?

A lot of people are recommending mid-range boards, but I recently built a new computer with the 955 Black Edition and this mATX board:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-m4a78lt-m-amd-760g-am3-pci-e-20-(x16)-ddr3-1600-1800-sata-3gb-s-raid-micro-atx-vga

I wanted to go cheap on it, because I didn't need extra features, and I'm glad I did. The motherboard is great, hasn't given me any problems, and it's only £43.79 on Scan.

Can these be fitted by a novice to update old Pc??

I have got an Old Advent T9201 with a Pentium 4 fsb800 and was thinking whether more ram currently (512mb) and a new processor would do the job?

Any ideas??

If I wasn't such an intel jerk, i'd be buying this. Heat added.

@Arsenal79: You'll need a new motherboard, in addition to your new processor and RAM. There are plenty of good computer building guides on the net, but you'll more than likely find that you'll need to replace most, if not all, of your current components.

That's no problem at all mate. I would advise that you either build a new PC from scratch or try and get yourself a good deal on a new desktop. The problem with trying to upgrade one of these legacy PC's (2004 I think that Advent is from) is that the Power Supply is probably quite weak and of low quality, so you'll want to replace that straight away. I think that the case could be used if you really wanted to, but a half decent case only costs 30 quid these days so you might as well get rid. As for the rest, it'll be largely incompatible with a new motherboard. Again, you could strip out the DVD Rewriter and use that in a new machine, but that's about it.

I'm a qualified computer technician, but there's a lot of people on HUKD that can advise you better on components to a particular budget. Perhaps if you could post how much you'd like to spend on a new PC then someone can get back to you and help you out.
