I have been looking to upgrade my X2 550 Black edition and have decided that given the price point and compatibility with my current Mobo this give the best bang for buck.

There were several offers that I seem to have missed out on a week and a half or so ago but as it stands right now this is the cheapest available, most places have it for £145+.

some games are outperformed by quad core processors. this is good if you have like 10+ programs running but still a good deal

How do you mean? I am using the processor for gaming- I have a 5770 but am going to be upgrading to a 6950 1gb soon (processor first!) however I also multi task a lot and often have numerous programs open and running at once- I also do a lot of video editing etc which is why I felt this would be the best bet. Do you think for my needs this one may be a better fit?

Thanks for the assistance.

waiting till drops to under £98

I'm waiting for Bulldozer to hit

There's a very good chance that you'll see better results with a faster quad core or possibly even a dual core, especially in most games.
Unless there are specific applications that you want to run that have been proven to run quicker with the extra cores, it's unlikely that you'll see enough of a performance increase to warrant the extra cost over a similar speed dual or quad.
Personally, I'd have a dig around for benchmarks from a few sites before making a final decision.

no - thats a lower specced 955 quad core - stick to the six core 1090T - cracking processor

I'm aware it's a lower spec component, but it is also cheaper and looking at benchmarks the performance in gaming and with many other application is extremely similar with the X4 actually comig out on top in many tests. Obviously with multi tasking and applications that utilise all the cores (granted this is not many) the X6 is stronger, albeit not by a huge amount.

I am just wondering what will be the best bang for buck so to speak.

If your after bang for buck, try unlocking and then overclocking your processor. Neither is really a bang for buck at the moment given that you already have a dual core phenom CPU.

Personally would upgrade GPU after trying to unlock and overclock. See performance in games and video editing. In gaming, going from a dual to quad or hex core isn't going to make a significant improvement in most games to be honest. GPU will tho however!

You'd be stupid to buy a high end AM3 CPU when bulldozer is so close now, there will be inevitable price drops on these come a few weeks or a month or so.

Also get the 2gb 6950 revision 1, they can be flashed to 6970s!!

Well in any case this is the cheapest by a significant margin so I think that qualifies it as a hot deal. I think I may hang on a little bit as suggested and wait for the new chips as even if I don't get one, it will initiate further price decreases in the Phenom II X6 series.

best of the phenoms, but the i5-2400 still benches higher and is better in games.

good price to upgrade a current system, but not good to build a new one from scratch.
