Velly Nice , but I still prefer the 2600 for its lower TDP, altho I suppose you could Udervolt this one for the same effect

Good point. And the better gamer's choice is the i5 9100F (also 65W) IMHO or even the 9100F for almost half the price and spend the difference on GPU. Anyway this is a nice price for the 2600X.

i5 9100F? Google returned no i5 like that.

Edit: just checked intel's cpu search. That's an i3 chip, not i5. Don't go looking for an i5 like that.

A typo, was supposed to say "the gamer's choice is the i5 9400F (65W) IMHO or even the 9100F... blah blah"
Forgot to add voted hot.
This chip is well worth the extra over the non x cos the cooler is bigger. The TDP is not to be trusted for an 'extra watts' usage gauge, its more a guide for o.e.m. builders. But yes, it will use less power if set up manually, the last 200 mhz costs quite a bit as it hits the wall.
The 4 and 6 thread cpu's shouldnt even be compared to this for budget gaming because they dont have the threads for new or future games. If you only do esports they are fine but for the price of this basically we are being spoilt by a.m.d.' s (or a.s.m.l.'s)rapid progress. If you cannot afford 12 threads you should be buying used.
Keep an eye out for pricing on the new 1600 AF, which is basically a budget 2600. It performs about 4% slower on those 12 threads at stock clocks and should roll in about £85.

Dont buy a wafty low threadcount intel chip, its a dead platform and you will never be able to justify an upgrade cpu for it.

Currently considering an upgrade. Got an i3 6100 on a mobo that supports up to 7th gen. looking at either cheap upgrade to more cores (i5 7500) or processor and upgrade so could go AMD b250 board and something like this deals processor. Use case is usual office stuff and gaming at 1080p 60hz with 1660super.
Ye cannae get the 1600AF in the UK , it would be a bargain if found @£85-93

The cpu I would be looking at is the i5 6600 (non 'K') They are cheaper than the 7 series and you get ~ 30 back for your old cpu. Mind you, you could just keep bidding on either 6600 or 7500 until you get one for 60-70 quid. (only 2% between them) That time of year is coming,(give it a month its dead and things finish cheaper .) the christmas money is spent.
C.E.X. will swap your i3 and £46 for an i5 6600. And that aint all dead money, you get half that back eventually. (when you switch platform you can sell it for 45 quid).
I would also look at the 6700 non k for about a ton but they are way over priced currently.
IF they ship the new ryzen 5 1600 AF here for £85 I would change the lot and sell the old gear.
There are a lot of options. But dont buy a new intel board, whatever you do, thats another dead, expensive upgrade platform that will lead you back to here.

Never even considered CEX - thanks soooo much for taking the time to reply, has given me other avenues to consider

they are better value than feEbay for less premium gear with trade ins. They want 80 quid for the 6600 (its ~that on ebay) but will give you £34 credit for the i3. The bonus is they actually test it first and give a year replacement warranty. And you aint gotta mess about with sellin the old one. Keep watching the used market, its right at its peak and drops off shortly until june then builds up again steadily towards chrimbo.

Just sell your Intel gear for good buck while you can and get yourself b450 Tomahawk (90£) with Ryzen 2700 (130£ now with free game that you can sell and game pass) => 8 cores now to serve you for 2-3y with ease and good mobo that can later host 12 core CPUs to serve for next 2-3y.
