Depends on your requirements, for sure
Worth the extra £25-30 for this over a 2600?

Not really, the 2600 can achieve the same core speeds as the x version with a aftermarket cooler so depends what you want

Strange chappy

How do you make that out ? He's stating his opinion.
I may not agree with him, but hardly makes him a "strange chappy"

You have better hashrate with ryzen 5 3600 if you want to mine monero when you surf the internet or so.
I've just convinced myself that I need to build a gaming pc having only ever built a desktop for school many years ago. Would pairing this with a b450 board limit me from upgrades say 2-3 years time? Having seen some other build they seem to recommend the 470 or 570..

I'm relearning all this so all tips will be great.

In 2, 3 years time AM4 will be obsolete. It'll be more about AM5 or whatever it'll be called. Set a budget and features you need and go from there.

Ah I see, a lot of the videos and guides I've read put a lot of emphasis on future proofing and upgradeablitiy. I ended up increasing my budget to incorporate some of that in my build but having read your comment I'll rethink again.

I'm looking to skip the next console generation or atleast be a late adopter to it so 3 years is not a bad lifespan. The chip Im thinking to go for is the 3600.
With the Ryzen 5 2600 at £109, the 2600X at £132.97, and the 3600 at £179.67, it's a great time to do an AM4 build.

People still do mining? I thought that fad finished

You can still mine new coins with gpu or monero algorithm with ryzen cpus.
You barely make the electricity money but if you keep the pc turned on why not mine a bit.

I'm in the same boat as you but PCPartPicker helped me out a lot. if you go to the completed builds section and select this chip it will then tell you what other people have added around it. You get a better idea of what goes with what.

People say an Asus x370 works well with a 3900x after a BIOS upgrade. For help community.amd.com/com…ion

(If you get the 3600, 2600, 2200g, or 2400G the Wraith Stealth is a bad cooler. Try the Cooler Master 212 evo or the smaller Antec a40 pro. Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut is a very good paste.)

If you don't have an earlier Ryzen to update the BIOS with try amd.com/en/…orm
