Currys seem to offer 20% / up to £80 cashback on Quidco. Would that make the 3600x 160 or is there a catch ? Eg cashback on spend before vat ?

I seems to have tracked through my Quidco at £166 - does that make sense?

I believe DSG pay Quidco on the price net of VAT.

Mine did the same. Its the price before VAT is added. I'm unsure if its 20% cashback though, the wording of the quidco deal is a bit odd.

Up to 20% / £80 cashback

I'd think it would mean 20% cashback with a maximum of £80 back. So here's hoping.
Is this not 7% quidco?
I'm pretty certain the 20% is only on Nespresso machines.

Ahh damn yes it is. It's just a link that includes all the offers listed below. Still it makes it a little cheaper than the ebay 5% offer.

Is this worth £20 more compared to 5 3600?

Just got this for £200 from Curry's online a couple of days ago. Good price. Quidco not showing as 7% yet, £1.67 fsr.

Didn't realise until after I ordered it but I hope the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F BIOS is all good straight out the box or I'm screwed.

Im pretty sure that motherboard will need a bios update, and it doesn't have bios flashback so you'll need a 1st or 2nd gen cpu. As far as I'm aware, the MSI Max boards are the only B450s which work straight out of the box. You might be able to take it to a local computer shop for the update but they may charge a small fee. You can also borrow a CPU for the update for free from AMD:

Short Term Processor Loan Boot Kit

AMD will offer affected and qualified users (as described below) an AMD Athlon 200GE Processor, including thermal solution, for short-term use ("boot kit") to perform the BIOS update on their motherboard.

This short-term processor loan or boot kit is offered through AMD warranty services and is available only for qualified users that:

Have made a valid purchase of a 3rd Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and;Are unable to boot that processor because the user’s current X470/B450 BIOS must be upgraded first. This service is free of charge with the following condition:

Once you have submitted your claim for a processor loan boot kit, AMD will require pictures of your 3rd Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and AMD Socket AM4 400 Series motherboard, which clearly shows the model numbers and unique serial numbers as well as a copy of the purchase invoice(s) to authorize the request. Additionally, a summary or copy of communication with the motherboard manufacturer is requested to indicate why support from the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is not suitable.

Once the RMA request is approved, the AMD Athlon 200GE processor will be sent with pre-paid return shipping. The processor is provided as a temporary loan to you for the sole purpose of updating the BIOS and must be returned within 10 business days of receipt. It is not necessary to return the provided thermal solution.

To obtain the boot kit, please carefully follow these instructions:

Go to the AMD online warranty claims page: amd.com/en/…ormFill in your full contact and product details (3rd Gen Ryzen Processor OPN number and serial number)In the Problem Description field enter "Boot kit Required" (without quotes)NOTE: The product must be a valid AMD processor with authentic OPN and serial number.

Once the claim is received and approved, confirmation details and boot kit instructions will be provided in a follow up email.

To save you googling and watching the 7 min video. no. “There is no reason for the 3600x to exist” it’s a marginal difference in most tasks. Usually 1% if that.

That fantastic thanks very much. The motherboard is on route so will get the ball rolling as soon as.

Other option would be to just return the board straight away and ask him to add the difference for the X470 at about an extra cost of £80 :/ Doubt hell go for that though.

Cheers

yvw . Trying to find out what works best with the new Ryzens has been harder than it should be. This list from reddit has saved me:

docs.google.com/spr…iew

It shows the VRM compatibility with each cpu and the boards that have bios flashback without cpu. It's only the X570s that don't need the bios update except for the MSI Max boards which were a refresh that happened after Gen3 release.

If you decide to return the board, the MSI Tomahawk Max is the best value for money tbh. The only one better is the mATX MSI Mortar Max (same VRM, extra USBs and 2 M.2s) but it's harder to find (from a quick google, only Lambda-Tek.com seems to have it in stock @ £87.95). Both of those work out of the box with Gen3 Ryzens.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. The board has been delivered today and is being returned today too. It's a little hard to see the trees amongst the forrest but after much consideration of the other boards we've opted for the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS for £180, so an extra £65 wasn't the end of the world
