B450 Pro Carbon if you can't get the Tomahawk.

Thank you guys, I'm trying to find a cheap upgrade path from a i5 6400. Ideally £200 ish total. I have 16gb ddr4 memory and SSD drives, a case and a decent PSU

What ddr4 memory do u have. Ryzen likes fast memory, if it's under 3000mhz get a faster memory

The cheapest, half decent upgrade you'll do would be a Gigabyte a320m sh2 v2 board, amazon, change out of £50, and then choose, depending on whether you have a graphics card about or not, so either a ryzen 5 2400g or 3400g (not much in it for performance), 4 cores, 8 threads. I have 4690k and ryzen 3 3200g and performance is identical, so the extra 4 threads should make a good deal of a difference? This will give you some video capability, akin to a gtx 1030? Otherwise go ryzen 7 2700, they really are a very good chip for the money and you'll cover all bases for around £130. You'll be hard pushed to make this busy... People might say dont go a320 mb in this day and age, but the small board and short traces gives it excellent performance for no money. Plus get the sh2 v2 version and they overclock also, do t pay heed to anyone that says they dont. They also support 3000 series cups on v40 bios. Maybe this will help you out?

Awesome info thank you. I'm not overly familiar with the Ryzen heirarchy have been basing my research on a 2600x. If that board will run the 2600x then it may well be perfect for me

Get 3200MHz and your set.
Yeah itll do 2000s and 3000s. If you're struggling let me know and I'll find a link. The 2600 is decent too, I have never seen a processor sit on 0% or 1% ticking over! What graphics you gonna use? No video on a 2600.... you probably know this though!! :-)

Aren't the performance gains not too big in 2nd series? I know it is quite a big deal in 1st series, but for 2nd I'd just recommend they save their money, for now, and just put it towards GPU as that is the most important for gaming.
What about a decent mini itx motherboard to go with this? With oc too. Thanks

GTX 1030.

If you want a decent GPU, get a used Rx 570. £100ish.

Don't get the really cheap ones. They probably were used for mining

320 boards are not the way to go, no overclock, no later Ryzen gen upgrade possibilities. Only 350 boards and upwards. Atm 450s are the way to go, they can do all. Second hand they're cheap as chips. Got one for the son at half the price, perform as well as new.

B450 tomahawk would be the best 'future proof' b450, the vrms are very good

A320 V2 boards DO overclock, don't quote rubbish you have only read somewhere else. I build systems based on these, as do many others. Whilst they are not B450 Mortars, they are just half the price and the short traces on these boards actually run faster than others! A320 SH2s didn't overclock, but A320 SH2 V2's most certainly do and do it well. So long as you aren't placing a top end cpu in there, the vrm's are fine...
