These are getting silly cheap now. I was going for a 3700x but I'm tempted to just get this and get Ryzen 4000 at a later date.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think ryzen 4000 will likely have a brand new socket set, so you'd probably need a different mobo.

Well, nobody yet can say for sure. However, from roadmap presented this October, itv seems that new socket set will be from Ryzen 5000 when DDR 5 will come into play

AM5 and DDR5 will be awhile nor will prices become consumer friendly yet. This is a fantastic price for an 8 core 16 thread CPU for both work and play.

As the other comment said, I don't think it's confirmed but strongly expected to be on the same socket. If not, at least the current offerings will be a lot cheaper in a year or two so I can decide what to do from there.

I'm probably gonna pair the 2700x with a b450 tomahawk max. Then upgrade to ryzen 4000 when I need to

Why not just overclock the 2700 in this deal to 2700x performance? Spend the savings on a better cooler, though you’ll still get some over clocking room on standard cooler.

I’d prefer the 2700 purely for the 65W TDP vs 105W, seems much better placed on the efficiency curve given it’s still got 8 cores.

One of the reasons why I bought a 1700, unfortunately about £270 at the time
Won’t be making that mistake again.

Well, it wasn’t that big a mistake! At the time, it was probably a good buy and you’ve had a lot of use out of it. It is pretty astounding to see 2700 at this kind of price now though, very versatile chip for not a lot.
I was going to get Ryzen 3600, but 2700 is pretty good and should serve well for few years overclocked a bit.
The biggest difference is in games, but I'm not a gamer.
Anyone recommend a decent after market cooler?
Tempted to get this. Done my first ever pc build 18 months ago learning using brand new but old cheap tech like the FX8350 chip (first ever build so don't want to risk blowing up any new tech) and to be honest I'm happy with the FX8350 as it does hold up quite well with demanding games like GTA5. Can play it at around 95% max settings with the 1050i graphics card. And it alao does all i beed fo do qith no issies too. So now think the Ryzen would be ideal. Not a gamer really but nice to know I have the power there if I need it

Depends on budget.

On the cheap I would get a Snowman MT4 (2 fans) for about £15 from Aliexpress.

If you have a better budget (£60) then a BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 is a good choice.

Yeah the 3600 is on at a decent price with the tomahawks MB through AWD-IT. Can’t decide on that or this 2700
The Zen 2 CPUs have much better IPC. If it's mostly playing games you do, then the 3600 is a better choice as long as its within your budget.
This or a 3600/3600X - will be paired with a B450 mobo, 16gb of 3200 RAM & a 2070 Super/2060 Super (not decided yet) for 1440p Ultrawide gaming...

EDIT - Just seen the deal for a 3600 for £167 - gone for that

I bought a MSI B450 Gaming Plus motherboard used off a friend and 2 * 8GB Viper 4 3200MHz DDR4 new from Amazon. My intention was to get a 3600, but very tempted by the 2700 at this price. The RAM I have is on the compatibility list for the 3600 but not for the 2700 though. What are the chances it would work at 3200MHz with the 2700, or would I be stuck at 2133MHz?

Good choice.

I already have a 2700(on a super cheap b350 bazooka), but I were buying today I'd go for the 3600.

As to GPU, If I were buying new I'd opt for a 5700 xt over a 2060 super.
However the bargain in today's market is a cheap 2nd hand 1080 ti.

Great price for a great chip. If only a gamer and your @1440p then definitely 2700 octo core against the newer 3600 hex core. 1080p gamer 3600 chip

Nil.
At worst you'll find it's only stable at 2933, or requires some manual timing tweaks to reach 3200.
Most likely Xmp profile 2 will 'just work' and give you the full speed.
