For people looking for motherboard recommendations:

You can overclock Ryzen 3000 processors on B450 boards.
For most users, there's no need to get anything beyond B450.

Heres a simple way to look at it:
If you really need PCIE 4.0 support get X570.
If you really need Crossfire / SLI support get X470.
If you don't need either of the above, all you need is a decent B450 board with BIOS Flashback.
A list of boards with BIOS Flashback on Reddit.

B450 MSI Tomahawk is perfectly adequate for this CPU at £99.96 on Amazon.
I picked up MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC for extra £20 as I wanted WIFI and it's supposed to have a slightly better chipset over the MSI Tomahawk.

These chips are quite powerful, I don't see there being a massive difference between i7 9700k on games.
I currently have a 5 year old i7 4790k which never bottle necks on games. It would be a rare sight to see the CPU floating around 100% utilization from any of my games.

So even if the performance is a little less on AMD, the price difference between i7 9700k is not worth it.

Lot of factors involved in the answer to that question, if you want to overclock and/or want to prepare for PCIe 4.0 then you need x570 which is twice the price, the Aorus ones are the best value in that range. Otherwise the B450 TOMAHAWK MAX is the cheapest solid option.

First of all thank you for your fast reply.
I really don’t know as it’s brand new in the box and not opened yet as we are sourcing all the parts for a new build.
Will I need to do a bios update if I want this processor to work on my motherboard.
Voted hot, comes with a cooler in the box.

I believe all B450 boards have to be updated to a new BIOS in order to support Ryzen 3000 Series.
So I expect that out of box, it will not support it as B450 was released with Ryzen 2000 processors.
In some cases, if you can update BIOS without a Ryzen 2000 processor as long as the manufacturer supports it.
Some B450 motherboards wont update without a Ryzen 2000 processor in the socket.

I couldn't find it with a quick google to see if Asus TUF supports BIOS Flashback. You will have to do some research yourself or drop a tweet or email to Asus.

I'm not saying "wait for the 9th gen" im saying it might worth waiting for the 10th gen as all of them have hyper-threading, unlike the 9700k and hyper-threading normally adds between 25-30% more performance, also a CPU doesn't have to hit 100% utilization to run slower than a counterpart.

Depends, if your looking to overclock your processor or getting better sustained boost frequency then get something better. If your not doing tasks that require max performance or overclocking this does the job just dandy.

I don't think that's likely. Laptop CPUs are coming out soon, but some rumours say they won't be releasing desktop 10nm chips at all, but will wait for 7nm for desktop. This article was from around 3 weeks ago so might be out of date : wccftech.com/int…22/
It's an excellent CPU and as highlighted here it will work on on existing and new boards (AMD promised to keep the architecture going) whereas if your upgrading to current Intel you'll need a new board and likewise with 10th gen. I use my rigs predominantly for gaming and will be moving from an i5 6600K (4.2 stable) to this CPU for now. With desktop application use (where cores and threads are important depending on your applications) this will match or exceed the 9th gen I5s & I7s including the 9900k at a fraction of the cost. If money is no object then sure a 9900KS with a >9700 super will be better. Expect games to use cores and threads even more efficiently over the next year as developers focus on PS5 and Scarlet. Given that the desktop variants of both their CPUs and GFX Cards are AMD based (and will be bringing ray tracing too). I'm neither Team Blue, Red or Green. I'm sorely tempted by this but holding out for Black Friday / Cyber Monday and hoping the recent RAM prices on here match or are lower, along with CPU and GPUs. To be fair, if the 9900k comes up at around this price it'll be a tough call but I'd rather know I can upgrade again without changing board - I'll likely go for a 570 over a B450 for that reason, although still looking at the Tomahawk.

The stock cooler has been proven to be excellent, even for overclocks with good case airflow - although the cpus themselves don't have that much headroom. They do sustain their boosts though, unlike Intel boosts which are much shorter.

B450 has nothing to do with VRMs.
