The wheels protrude, we were told by an airline worker that you should not buy this type as they get so many that get broken on conveyors in airport then aircraft loading that they are not worth the money. Much better to loose a tiny bit of space inside the suitcase and have wheels that are nearly flush.

I have the medium version of this, and it's survived 2 return transatlantic trips so far, and still looks like new, whereas my other one, which had recessed wheels, got crushed. At this price it's pretty much disposable if it only lasts a couple of trips.
