We've use AA via Philly trick a lot and the flights to Philly are serviced by A330's with fantastic service. In flight entertainment is pretty good, wifi etc and food and beverages are free. They serve a great (free) IPA beer by New Belgium Breweries if Budweiser isn't your thing. I would give you two bits of advice to avoid issues. 1: You need at least 3 hours to "comfortably" clear customs in Philly, Grab your bags, forward your luggage and go through security (again) BEFORE your onward flight, and don't forget to add the 20 minute walk to the gate for your onward journey.!! You cannot comfortably do it in 90 minutes regardless of what anyone tells you. ( 2 hours is the very quickest we've managed to date) 2: The onward flights from Philly are serviced by some of the oldest crappiest 737's you will ever encounter. Think "1970's chic" and you're not far off. If you struggle with tight spaces, avoid these like the plague. So in short - The long haul bit is excellent value, the short haul bit is horrible. But - If you drink enough IPA on the long haul bit just sleep through the short haul section of the flight. At these prices you can't complain really. HTH :)
