Great idea - good for the independent retailers

Only place near me is an Aston Martin parts place.

A month and a day....does it really need a re-post? I know...it's the rules right.... oO

It's a great deal for a lot of people, hopefully including the small businesses themselves.

It was when it was announced by Amex and confirmed the sign up date, 10th November, so seemed to make sense. Good to remind people of the start now too.

No, check the map.

Ah didn't realise you.d post originally, it's a shame hukd can't bump up deals like this to the top again once the offer starts as it'll be hidden away for no one to see unless they hit a search (which can be extremely temperamental on here)

does anyone know how this works for the merchants? would be interested to know if amex is covering the £5 credit themselves, or the merchant is, or they're splitting it...

I'd guess it was amex covering, sure they take enough fees from these small shops, it's promoting that they accept amex, as it still seems even 300 branch high street shops still don't

great deal.

Looked at my local places and several show up that don't take Amex (quite a few small businesses do not accept them) so beware before u go there

Cold.
More expensive in the long run because small independent stores overcharge and are generally rip-off merchants.
Cheaper deals at Tesco / Online etc.

It's Amex covering, don't think any merchant with half a brain would sign up if they were told they'd receive £5 for a £10 spend, minus the hefty fee Amex already take.

Another tesco fool, the amount of times my one stop shop (that is tesco owned) has £1 offers on that are on offer for £1.50 in tesco.. Supermarkets are not always cheaper, but the RRP tend to be higher to make something look a bargain

On the occasions that the retailer has refused to take Amex, I just phoned Amex customer service and they put a credit on the account.

When this was first posted it looked like HMV was on. Has it been removed for everyone or just Cambridge? Also T's and C's say credit once per registered card per retailer so supplementary cards registered separately are fine?

Can't see HMV in Dundee. But in any case I think calling HMV a small shop would be stretching it.

Cold

Cold for many reasons
1. Very few places except American Express
2. Of the places that do except American Express a lot of them want you to spend more than the £10 minimum
3. Also a number of stores that I've been to in previous promotions want to charge you to use the card because they claim American Express charge them too much to have the card accepted in their stalls
4. A very poor map
5. Too many of the American Express cards has very high annual fees you have to earn in excess of £20-£30,000 to get one
6. It's true small independent stores do charge much more than larger retailers
7. Online retailers with discount codes will prove to be much better value than going into a store struggling to have them except the card wanting you to pay more to use the card and wanting to charge you to use the card
8. Nowhere near as good as the previous shop small promotion two years ago which gave you a 5 pound statement credit for every 5 pounds you spent
9. A great number of the stores in the map don't even acknowledge that their part of the promotion
10 previous shop Small promotions used to allow you to register your card through foursquare and through subsidiary cards that is American Express cards that is not directly from them but thru other providers (lower card fees this practice was stopped) this promotion is much more restrictive
I would like to think I'm quite knowledgeable on this due to the fact that I have five American Express cards myself and have done all the shop small promotions since its conception two years ago in the UK I find that this promotion is actually quite poor and I would do better by purchasing online without the stress and saving much more money in the long run

absolutely right American Express fees to the merchant are scandalously high and that is why so few High Street retailers have them as a payment method think about it you as a merchant on being subsidised 5 pounds for every customer that walks in yet you probably having to pay American Express £2.50 to pay for the transaction is nonsensical a waste of time for them

dean_brfc

Haha. Nice try.

I just wondered Dean whether you actually have any American Express cards yourself and have participated in the promotion before?

you will find it difficult to get Amyx to apply a statement credit there has been a big clampdown on crediting accounts I recently had a renewal of my gold card which has an annual fee of £125. last year I got the fee reduced to £30
this year I had to pay £90!!! I was told by the customer service rep that Amex have really clamped down on applying credits to accounts due to the fact that it was being abused, I asked for advice regarding this years shop small promotion what he told me to do is to go back to the retailer, make the purchase with the American Express card ,if refused inform the retailer I had spoken to customer services and they are on the shop small list and should accept the card. Furthermore there should be a shop small sign on the door or in the window of the shop in plain view as you go in. If it's there and they still refuse contact customer services and they will discuss with the retailer why they are refusing the transaction and may apply a credit it's just far too much hassle

I haven't used mine with small merchants but I've done it at larger places through Foursquare on a number of occasions. I'll try to take advantage of this somewhere if I can though.

Why would I click on a deal for Amex if I didn't have one?
Edited by: "dean_brfc" 4th Dec 2014

Interesting stuff.

I use Amex as much as I can as I have the 5% cashback running for 3 months on my new card. I noticed there's at least one pub that I visit regular on the shop small list, who previously has rejected Amex and I have since been paying via Mastercard. Either the list is wrong or they have since started taking Amex.
Either way, I will be eating there next week and attempting to use the card!

Cool story, bro.

This is speculation but I think that when some merchants receive their payment terminals the agreements they sign require them to take Amex (despite the higher fees). Shops then refuse to take Amex so that they keep a higher proportion of the sale. My assumption is that one of the benefits of the Shop small promotion for Amex is that they can identify which shops are claiming to refuse Amex cards whilst being required to do so.

I've always received a credit in the past when I've been forced to use a different card so I'll be disappointed if Amex are clamping down. It is a great promotion in Cambridge because there are lots of locations that accept Amex. I was surprised by how few locations there were in North London in comparison last year.

hot from me - my local feed shop is listed and i buy fuel there. cheers

Well they are not clamping down for me. The £10 Esso credit didn't appear the 4th time I used it (it had on the other three cards on my account), contacted Amex, result was a "terribly sorry sir, I have put a £10 credit on your account".

Of the places that do except American Express a lot of them want you to spend more than the £10 minimumAgain, this is in your experience, certainly never happened to me.3. Also a number of stores that I've been to in previous promotions want to charge you to use the card because they claim American Express charge them too much to have the card accepted in their stalls. Not happened once in over 50 shop small transactions I've done jn the past.4. A very poor mapAgree with this, the map is naff. But I just print out the list of shops and as they are local I know where they are.5. Too many of the American Express cards has very high annual fees you have to earn in excess of £20-£30,000 to get one. There are free cards and waived fees but most of the cards give you something back, like cashback or MR points so it's worth it. Also, they give you a pro-rata refund on the fee if you cancel.6. It's true small independent stores do charge much more than larger retailers. Most of our local independents match the online prices now. I even get my milk delivered for the same price as the supermarket milk.7. Online retailers with discount codes will prove to be much better value than going into a store struggling to have them except the card wanting you to pay more to use the card and wanting to charge you to use the cardObviously depends on what your purchasing...8. Nowhere near as good as the previous shop small promotion two years ago which gave you a 5 pound statement credit for every 5 pounds you spentTrue, but I'm sure that one was over one or two days, whereas this is two weeks. And £5 off £10 is pretty good. Amex offer so many deals and spend credits it's great. Other credit cards I have offer nothing.9. A great number of the stores in the map don't even acknowledge that their part of the promotionSometimes happens but a quick email to amex and they have always looked after me ;-).10 previous shop Small promotions used to allow you to register your card through foursquare and through subsidiary cards that is American Express cards that is not directly from them but thru other providers (lower card fees this practice was stopped) this promotion is much more restrictiveNot true, any Amex card issued from Amex, MBNA, Lloyds etc can take part.
