They use near field communication to talk to the wiiu gamepad. They have different uses on various games but these ones are specifically for smash bros and act as a portable character memory card. In other compatible games (not all of which are announced) they will unlock costumes (mario kart or give you a new character to play (hyrule warriors).

They're little figurines that can also come to life in games and give you special content.

In Super Smash Bros. it becomes your trainer/sparring buddy. You fight against it and it levels up, learns your attacks/style of play and improves, becoming harder to defeat, which in turn makes you a better player.

In Mario Kart, it will unlock a special design for your car based on that character.

They're kinda like Skylanders/Disney Infinity, but can be used in lots of Wii U games.

arnt these ones easy to get most places?
