To help the nation commemorate VE Day on Friday (8 May), all historical records on family history website Ancestry will be free from Monday 4 May to Sunday 10 May.

The 75th anniversary of VE Day will take place on Friday 8 May, marking 75 years since Winston Churchill declared a national holiday to celebrate the news that the World War Two – and nearly six years of fighting in Europe – had come to an end.

This free access gives people the chance to discover more about their family’s involvement in the World War Two, the roles they played in a time of need and the personal stories that lie behind that period of history.

Ancestry hosts the UK’s largest online collection of family history documents with more than two billion searchable records. Millions of these records are specifically from World War Two, which can help people discover the everyday experiences of soldiers on the frontline as well as all the people back home who lived through rationing, evacuation, and led the vital efforts on the home front.

Nice. Any idea if free-free, or give-us-your-debit-details free?

Still don't understand why you have to pay to look up your own relatives

So do you think all the information from back in the day just magically appeared online over night or maybe, just maybe, someone had to input the info and you are paying for this service?

Me neither. imagine paying to use a service. I mean every time I go to the supermarket I never pay for potatoes, you can just pick them for free in a field so why should a supermarket charge you for them.
There won't be many historical records between the 4th and the 10th of May

Thanks for sharing @reindeer333 - it's always great to know when the Ancestry free weekends/weeks are
At the moment moment they are asking for payment. I’ll wait as I note this starts tom
Any idea if this will be worldwide records too? Got a normal sub but found some family in USA so would be nice to see more. The worldwide sub package is silly money
Is this really free as in free free?

Well basically you help them grow their business , providing them with your details and your family details as much as you know and you still have to pay for it ....
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve only seen free weekends so this is the first full week I’ve seen. Heat

Any idea how far back this goes?

I'm hoping to date my ancestors back to Africa, to the beginning of man.

Cheers.

The problem with these services is that when I was searching for my grandads army details I used multiple websites including ancestry, forces records etc and there is no record of him.

I had to use the official British army mod service which shown me his army number, where he was during ww2 and his medals etc. Then I used the royal artillery museum and they had more details about him.

But according to every other website I can't find anything to do with the army, or his 2 brothers yet I have photos of all 3 of them in uniform etc.

Depends when he served. Only certain records available publicly and some from WW1 destroyed in fires from bombing during WW2

Are we talking pre save all your kisses for me?
Does anyone know if this is more detailed than the Libraries version? My mother is doing our family tree and has access as the local library is closed so they have allowed all borrowers to use it but we aren't sure if there are any limitations to the data on that version. She can't find much past her grandparents but that might just be lack of records rather than a site limitation.

From the comments last time, the library edition seems to have more data like US records, whereas this is just UK

And servers to host this data run for free?
I'm not sure if i'm missing something here but you get "14 days free trial" on Ancestry ? So their website says, so what is the attraction with this deal?

1939-1947. I got photo copies from the mod. His b103, his service and casualty form etc. Then the RA museum had records of what courses and when he did them in Italy etc. Yet if I type his number etc on any website. He doesn't exist
Ancestry is still one of those websites which does not warn you that you are leaving a free period and about to be charged.

Appreciate that I should have read the small print, but I spent about an hour looking, got bored, did not log in again for two weeks.

My understanding is that with the free trial you would almost certainly need to provide payment details so they can charge you if/when you forget to cancel in time. With this deal, you only need to create a free account, with no payment information required.

Yes the fairy's are paying for it. Personal data these day's is as good as gold
